JoseA FAIRY TALE WITH WRONG ENDING: REMEMBERING JOSE FERNANDEZ 5 YEARS LATER: The phone in David Samson’s dark house rang about 5:30 that Sunday morning. Michael Hill, the Miami Marlins’ director of baseball operations, was on the line. “He sounded weird. Quiet and weird,” recalls Samson, then the team president. “Nothing good happens when he calls me at that hour. It means a player’s got arrested. I said, ‘Mike, what’s up? Are you OK?’ He said, ‘I have someone on the phone from Fish and Wildlife. There’s been an accident.’ ” A Florida Fish and Wildlife officer, at the scene, said there had been a boating accident overnight, a crash into the jetty rocks off Government Cut. Full column: Fairy Tale With Wrong Ending: Remembering Jose Fernandez 5 Years Later.

TuaTUA'S RIB INJURY IN KEEPING WITH WEIRD, ROCKY START TO QB'S DOLPHINS CAREER: You heard the news Wednesday that Tua Tagovailoa will miss the Miami Dolphins game this Sunday at Las Vegas because his rib injury is worse than first thought, and, if you have followed this young man’s travails, the reaction had to be: Of course it is. What, exactly, has gone right for Tagovailoa in the year and a half since Miami drafted him in the first round out of Alabama? Anything? Some day he’s going to look back and laugh at his unimaginably weird entree into the NFL. We can only hope because that would mean this will have all worked out in the end — an eventuality presently unknowable and open to vigorous debate. Full column: Tua's Rib Injury In Keeping With Weird, Rocky Start to QB's Dolphins Career.

CatsHOPE AND HYPE ARE SKY-HIGH AS FLORIDA PANTHERS OPEN CAMP. TIME TO FINALY DELIVER: There was none of this feeling in 1995. I was around. I know. The Florida Panthers were a third-year NHL expansion team with a new coach and a rag-tag roster of young prospects and others teams’ discards. As training camp opened there was zero expectation that this team, this team, might make it into the 1996 Stanley Cup Final with a shower of plastic and rubber rats for confetti. Fast-forward a quarter of a century and now the expectations are on this team. Big and heavy. Entering the franchise’s 28th season, and for the first time, Florida opens training camp Thursday with playoffs a must, a deep run in them expected, and the club’s first league championship a plausible dream. Full column: Hope And Hype Are Sky-High. Time For Florida Panthers To Finally Deliver.

The Lost Weekend: On Dolphins, Canes' crushing home losses: Dolphins' Shutout Loss in Home Opener a New Low For Flores Era / Miami Hurricanes Aren't Very Good -- And Keep Proving It / and The Big Question About Canes, Fins After Ugly Home Losses.

PicksOUR RESULTS ON NFL WEEK 2 PICKS: BIG REBOUND OVERALL, SOLID VS. SPREAD: Bounced back from an 8-8 overall mark in upset-strewn Kickoff Weekend to card a nifty 12-4 mark in Week 2. Against the spread, we held steady and solid with a second straight 9-7. Highlights: Nailed two of three outright upset picks for the second straight week with Cowboys coming through against Chargers in our Upset of the Week and Panthers surprising Saints. Also had another trio of 'dogs-with-points in covers by the Giants, Vikings and Titans.

LoboslogoGREG'S LOBOS: BIG, BIIIG WEEK 2 WIN IN PFPI FANTASY: Lobos dropped their opener but surged back with a huge 153-94 Week 2 win over Christie (Chris' wife). Got 40 points (!) from Aaron Jones, 32 from Lamar Jackson and 24 from Mike Evans to lead the high-scoring affair. A week earlier we had only one player reach 20 points. We put a Lobos Mint under our pillow, dreamed big, and awoke to renewed championships hopes!

HERALD NFL WEEK 2 QB RANKINGS: CARR, MURRAY TAKE CENTER STAGE: Cardinals' Kyler Murray takes Week 2 honors while Raiders' Derek Carr surges into the overall season lead as we dig in to the Miami Herald's 24th season of NFL quarterback rankings. Story and updated Top 20 chart here: Dolphin Tua Tagovailoa is outside our initial Top 20. The good news? He outranks Aaron Rodgers! Story and chart here: NFL Week 2 QB Rankings.

(Our pod simulcasts on Sirius XM every Monday 5-6 p.m. ET).

PicksNFL WEEK 2 PICKS: DOLPHINS-BILLS AND ALL THE REST!: We were all flying blind in Week 1. That includes the oddsmakers who set the lines that instigate a million bets. Twelve underdogs covered the point spread, the most in Week 1 in the entire Super Bowl era. And nine of those dogs won outright — the most in any week in four years. Given all that, I feel almost OK to have come out of Kickoff Weekend 8-8 overall, especially with two of my L’s coming in overtime. And our 9-7 mark against the spread might have merited a doggone parade! Highlights: Nailed two of my three outright upset picks, including my Upset of the Week (Texans over Jaguars) and the Dolphins (+3) winning at New England. Also had a trio of ‘dogs-with-points smile upon me with covers by the Browns, Steelers and Cardinals. Now there’s some tangible Week 1 evidence in the pocket as we foray confidently into Week 2 with picks for Dolphins-Bills and all the rest. Got off to a great start on Thursday night. Had Washington winning but the Giants +3 1/2 covering --and nailed it both ways with Washington's 30-29 win. Check out NFL Week 2 Gems for all our latest picks.

Our most recent columns: Xavien Howard Deserved the Money and Respect He Wanted -- This Was Why / Canes' Offense Dangling Like a Cat And Needing Help / Tua's Burden as Dolphins Open at Pats? Lift a Team, a Franchise and a City. Now / Chasing Giants & Ghosts: Miami Hurricanes' 20-year search for return to glory / and Miami Herald's 2021 NFL Team Rankings: You Won't Believe Where Dolphins are.

OUR NFL WEEK 1 PICKS: TOUGH START OVERALL, BETTER AGAINST SPREAD: You fly a little bit blind in Week 1, and it sure showed in my lousy 8-8 record overall, two of the losses unluckily in overtime. Did better against the point spread with a credible 9-7 mark. Highlights: Nailed two of my three outright upsets picks, including my Upset of the Week (Texans over Jags) and the Dolphins (+3) winning outright at New England. Also had a trio of 'dogs-with-points covering in the Browns, Steelers and Cardinals.

LoboslogoGREG'S LOBOS: DISAPPOINTING LOSS TO OPEN FANTASY PLAY: The Lobos fell 120-93 to family friend Brandon in our family 'n friends PFPI Fantasy League opener. Tough to win when your leading scorer (Keenan Allen) has only 20 points. And when your big-dog running backs (Ezekiel Elliott And Aaron Jones) combine for eight points from a projected 28. Still believe in my lineup and roster. Lobos mint under the pillow and still dreaming big!

HERALD NFL WEEK 1 QB RANKINGS: DAK ON TOP, SEE WHERE TUA LANDS: Cowboys Comeback Kid Dak Prescott opens on top as Miami Herald begins its 24th season of NFL quarterback rankings. Dolphin Tua Tagovailoa is outside our initial Top 20. The good news? He outranks Aaron Rodgers! Story and chart here: NFL Week 1 QB Rankings.

Coteshow PetsGREG COTE SHOW PODCAST: NEW EPISODE OUT NOW!: Our Miami Herald podcast debuted in March and the new Episode 41 is out now! PicksLoboslogoNFL PIX 'N FANTASY: WEEK 14 RESULTS: NFL Pix--Ouch. Took a hit against the spread: Week 14 was unkind to us, delivering a subpar 9-7 mark overall and a far worse 5-11 against the spread, our worst this season ATS. We had some nice plays. Nailed our Upset of the Week with Denver winning at Carolina ("Aawwk!"). Had a second outright upset bull's-eye with Washington winning at San Fran, and also had Dolphins-with-points covering vs. Kansas City. The rest we won't mention. Wrong side of too many point spreads. We move on. Glad you're along for the ride on our 30th season of picks in the Herald! Greg's Lobos: A loss in (consolation) playoffs: Lobos almost made main playoffs even at 5-8 but fell short, then lost in first rou d of consolation playoffs 188-73. (How in hell does a team capable of 188 points not make the Championship Playoffs? But 73 points won't win much, either; neither will 18 points (Chris Carson) for a leading scorer. This is PFPI Fantasy, our friends 'n family 10-team PPR league. We'll keep you posted on the big finish.

TuatIT IS THE TELLING MONTH. FOR DOLPHINS' TUA, WE BEGIN TO SEE IF GREATNESS IS IN HIS REACH: Though Dolphins rookie quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has impressed, the proving has just begun. And now it elevates to a whole new level. See, it shouldn’t be Joe Burrow and Justin Herbert who Tagovailoa is judged against. Aim higher. If Dolphins fans truly believe/hope Tagovailoa is the long-sought answer for real, the conduit to sustained winning and winning big, then aim higher they must. Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills. Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. They are Tagovailoa’s competition now if a path back to the Super Bowl is how high Miami dares dream. Which brings us to the next month that closes the NFL regular season as the 8-4 Dolphins try to not only reach the postseason but to win the franchise’s first playoff game in two decades, since December 30, 2000. Tagovailoa must lead them there. Here is his gauntlet. To read our full latest column, please visit For Dolphins' Tua, Now Is When We Begin to See If Greatness Is In His Reach.

Picks LoboslogoNFL PIX 'N FANTASY: WEEK 13 RESULTS: NFL Pix--A head-above-water week: Some nutty Week 13 outcomes -- Giants over Seattle? Washington over Steelers? -- but we weathered the storm to go 9-6 straight-up and 8-7 agains the point spread. That included a trio of 'dogs-with-points in covers by the Jaguars, Jets and Washington. Glad you're with us on our 30th season of picks in the Herald! Greg's Lobos: A win ... but no miracle: Lobos ended a six-game losing streak by closing regular season with a 123-92 win fueled by 24 from Aaron Jones, 22 from Cam Newton and 20 from Michael Thomas. But it wasn't enough to make the 6-team playoffs in PFPI Fantasy, our friends 'n family 10-team PPR league. At 5-8 we finished in seventh place. Oh well, at least we're in the consolation playoffs. We'll announce our MVL -- Most Valuable Lobo -- after the season. Our three finalists are Amari Cooper, Jones and Newton. So stay tuned.

HtOUR THANKSGIVING DAY MESSAGE: In September of 1972, with no license to drive yet, I took a city bus from my house to the Fort Lauderdale offices of the Miami Herald, answering a small ad for a parttime sports clerk. I got the job. Almost 50 years later, my unexpected career continues. Thanks to you all. To my loyal Herald readers. To my Le Batard Show fans. And more recently to my podcast family. I am grateful to have been welcomed in to play a small part in your lives. Even if we have not met, please know you are a part of mine. These have been the toughest of times. Because of that more than despite it, my thankfulness runs especially deep this year. I wish you all love, health, optimism and a Happy Thanksgiving!

And of course there's a new Mount Gregmore (U's) and more. Appreciate you listening each week and check out the new ep!

NFL PIX 'N FANTASY: WEEK 11 RESULTS: NFL Pix--We'll take it: We came out alive at 8-6 overall in what I think was a tough Week 11. Better: We were a nifty 9-5 against the spread, making us 20-8 ATS the past two weeks. Last week we failed miserably on our Lions-Panthers Upset of the Week, "Aawwk!" turning to "Aawwful." But a lot else went right. Called Houston's mini-upset of New England, and also had a pair of 'dogs-with-points in covers by Jets and Cowboys. Glad you're with us on our 30th season of picks in the Herald! Greg's Lobos: Sinking, sinking...: Lobos lost a fifth game in a row, this one 129-119. Had six starters at 15-plus points led by Michael Thomas' 20, but it wasn't enough to keep us from sliding to 4-7 in PFPI Fantasy, our friends 'n family 10-team PPR league. Remarkably (shades of the NFC East), I'm still in the six-team playoff chase. Two closing wins for 6-7 could get me there. Stay tuned.

FishCOVID-DECIMATED AND 30,000-TO-1 ODDS, MIAMI MARLINS ARE A SPORTS MIRACLE FOR THE AGES: We have reached a notable touchstone in South Florida professional sports history when the Miami Heat reaching the NBA Finals, one season after not even making the playoffs, is not the most remarkable story in town. Or even close to it. The Miami Marlins are the impossible dream come true, the feel-good sports story of surreal, pandemic 2020 — the new standard for “No way! You’re kidding. Seriously!?” You want an example for the ages that anything really is possible. We have the new one, and if any team can top this, have at it. The Marlins lost 105 games last season, the most in the National League. They began this truncated MLB season in the deep throes of a ground-up rebuild after trading stars for prospects. Their preseason odds to win the World Series were 30,000-to-1, dead last. Oh, and when play finally started in July, the Marlins were embarrassed to have so many players test positive for COVID-19 that eight games in a row had to be postponed, so decimated was the roster. This is the interloper in the postseason. Must be magic. Call ‘em the Merlins! Miami’s best-of-3 series at the Chicago Cubs starts Wednesday. Picks LoboslogoNFL PIX 'N FANTASY: WEEK 3 RESULTS: NFL Pix: Solid vs. spread. Stumbled in at 8-7-1 straight-up for Week 3, with bad luck on at least four of our winners blowing fourth-quarter leads. Much better against the spread at 10-6, including Packers over Saints in our Upset of the Week ("Aawwk!"), and three 'dogs-with-points (Vikings, Bengals, Panthers). Join us in our 30th season of picks in the Herald. Greg's Lobos: Heartbreak loss: Lobos fell to 1-2 in our friends 'n family 10-team PPR league with a tough-to-take 103-102 loss. Win was ours for the taking but my Baltimore defense laid an egg Monday night, with two points. Dak Prescott's team-high 28 points went for naught. Really missing our injured top draft pick, Michael Thomas.

DragicHEAT-CELTICS GAME 2: MIAMI IN COMMAND AFTER ANOTHER RALLY, ANOTHER WIN: Something very strange is going on here. The kind of thing that makes you believe in magic and miracles and all that other stuff with no ties to logic. The Miami Heat keeps winning. Relentlessly. Astoundingly. Now Miami is two wins from reaching the NBA Finals. After not even making the postseason last year. After being the underdog in all three playoff rounds so far in the surreal pandemic bubble that is 2020. For the Heat, the Disney bubble is not bursting. It is lifting this team. Thursday night Miami trailed by 13 points at halftime. By as many as 17 at one point. It was understandable. The desperate Boston Celtics, after losing Game 1, had to have this. The Heat was so due a loss. The third quarter score was 37-17, Miami. Bam Adebayo lit it up for 15 in the quarter, of his 21 total. Final: Miami 106, Boston 101. Heat, now up 2-0 entering Game 3 of this best-of-7 Eastern Conference finals on Saturday night. Thursday’s rally was after Miami had trailed by 14 points in the fourth quarter in the series opener, only to win in the frenetic last seconds on Jimmy Butler’s basket and then Adebayo’s epic block of Jayson Tatum’s attempted last-second winning dunk — a play instantly installed as an heirloom of Heat legend and lore. Thursday’s magic? How about Goran Dragic, the Dragon breathing fire, with seven consecutive points of his 25 total to forge the late lead? Magic? Consider: None of the Heat’s three championship-winning teams had ever begun a postseason on the 10-1 run this Miami team is on. None with Dwyane Wade. None with LeBron James. Yes, something strange is going on here. For our full latest column, please visit Miracle Or Magic, Miami Heat's Stunning Postseason Run Continues

OUR NFL WEEK 2 PICKS: DOLPHINS-BILLS AND THE REST: As we dig into our 30th season of NFL picks in the Miami Herald, here are our Week 2 selections for Dolphins-Bills, our Game of the Week -- Lamar Jackson vs. Deshaun Watson -- our Upset of the Week and all the rest. We pick two big upsets in all including a prime-time stunner ("Aawwk!). Is a Dolphins home-debut win one of those upsets? To find out please visit NFL Week 2 Gems for our previews and picks on every matchup. Our picks appear Thursday afternoons every week online, and Fridays in print. (Our Thursday Night Football pick appears Wednesdays online and Thursdays in print). Visit Week 2 Thursday Gem for our separate Bengals-Browns pick. We nailed it for a perfect start to our Week 2, getting it right straight-up and against-the-spread win. We had Cleveland winning but Cincy-plus-six. Thanks to Joe Burrow's late TD drive, both happened. Thanks, Joey. Owe you a cup o' coffee.

Picks LoboslogoNFL PIX 'N FANTASY: WEEK 1 RESULTS: Late on this. Will have it in the blog Tuesdays each week henceforth. NFL Pix: Rough start. Went 8-8 straight-up and 6-9-1 against the spread -- not the kind of launch I envisioned for my 30th season of picks in the Herald. Had some bad luck. Example: Dropped last-second TD pass costing me the Lions win I'd predicted. Anyhoo. No excuses. Sally forth! Greg's Lobos: Opening loss: No Le Batard Show league this year so this is our friends 'n family league. The 'Bos fell 139-109, with five starters perfoming below projections. A bright spot: Chris Carson's team-leading 24 points. The bad news moving forward: My thoroughbred spilled his jockey out the gate. Top draft pick Michael Thomas, with a high-ankle sprain, could miss several weeks. Oy vey. Stay tuned.

But there are stakes Bowlfor the Canes in today's 4 p.m. Independence Bowl vs. Louisiana Tech (on ESPN) from Shreveport, La. It's the difference between finishing with a winning record or a losing record. It's also about Manny Diaz and his team doing what it has repeatedly failed to do this disappointing season: Perform well again an underdog opponent when given extra time to prepare. Think Central Michigan. Think FIU. Miami has underperformed against (supposedly) lesser foes. Will it yet again? UM is not good enough to take anybody lightly, and La-Tech is 9-3 and has won five bowl games in a row. By contrast, UM's bowl record is a sad 1-8 since 2008. Yet Miami is a 6-point favorite despite losing four players who'll skip the game for the NFL Draft, including senior linebacker Michael Pinckney. I expected Jarren Williams and N'Kosi Perry both to see action at QB for Miami. I also expect UM's defense to rise up. But this is a big game for Louisiana Tech. Can Diaz convince his team it is for the Canes, too? We'll see. Cote's pick: Hurricanes. 30-21. Watch for season-finale Canesfan Satisfaction Meter postgame poll online and directly below right after today's game ends.

CANESFAN SATISFACTION METER: 2019 FINAL: 5.8%: Results are certified in the latest -- and season's last -- of the Miami Herald’s Canesfan Satisfaction Meter Csmpostgame polls, and they show 5.8 percent final approval in the wake of Thursday's 14-0 loss to underdog Louisiana Tech in the Independence Bowl in Shreveport, La., leaving the Hurricanes' final 2019 season record at 6-7. That is the third-lowest total in the 11-year history of the CSM, and the worst since 2014. The CSM is your invitation after every Hurricanes game to vote on your overall satisfaction with the team and season in a continuing weekly gauge of how UM football fans are feeling. Criteria for voting is your own, but I suggest you consider the most recent game’s performance and caliber of opponent, the season as a whole, the program’s direction and your overall degree of optimism -- all in the context of reasonable expectations. Because this was the final poll, I suggested added emphasis on the season as a whole. Online voting determines the weekly verdict, which is final the morning after one full day of voting. In this case that was around 10 a.m. today/Saturday.

Our NFL Week 7 picks!; plus LeBron James forgot who he is in following company line on China, and nothing will stop hell-bent Dolphins from finding their Holy Grail. Latest columns & more

PicksDOLPHINS-BILLS, GAME OF THE WEEK, UPSETS: OUR NFL WEEK 7 PICKS: Off our record-setting 2018 season and a solid start to our 29th year of NFL picks in the Miami Herald, here are our latest selections. Will the winless Dolphins cover the enormous point spread in Buffalo? Who won the tough battle for Game of the Week? Can we keep our Upset of the Week streak alive? Answers to all of that and more may be found in the motherlode that is our NFL Week 7 Gems. Alas, got off to a bad start to our week last night, as we incorrectly had the Broncos upsetting the Chiefs in Denver. Um, the Chiefs won 30-6. This was our worst pick of the year. I make my picks by a mixture of research, methodology and gut feeling. In this case I felt KC was the better team poised to rebound from two straight losses -- but allowed me to talk me into the Broncos. Dumb. Against form. Tally ho!

LebchinaLEBRON JAMES FORGETS WHO HE IS, FOLLOWS COMPANY LINE ON CHINALeBron James is the villain now, to many, for one comment this week that served to inflame rather than quell the fallout from the NBA’s China crisis. It isn’t especially fair, but this is the take-sides society we have become, where the moderate middle has disappeared and nuance gets bludgeoned by the immediacy of outrage that social media provides (and encourages). So LeBron is the sellout now, right? The faker who turned his back on social justice where money was involved? First, the easy answer: No. He isn’t. The I Promise School that James founded for at-risk kids in Akron, Ohio, is thriving. In Miami we remember when he wore that hoodie in support of Trayvon Martin. James spoke out against that white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. He has defended Colin Kaepernick against the misrepresentations. Worn “I Can’t Breathe” T-shirts during warmups. Spoke out on stage at the 2016 ESPYs. At every turn, James — still the biggest star in the NBA at 34 even as "best player" is now arguable — has shown his heart is right. There is a world off the court that he cares to impact, and does. He is a model for athlete activism, for the use of platform and voice. It is only in this context of credibility earned that raised eyebrows this week when he said Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey "wasn’t informed" in writing the tweet that caused the firestorm. Tank4tuaNO SACRIFICE TOO GREAT FOR TANKING-FOR-TUA DOLPHINS TO FIND THEIR HOLY GRAIL: Tua Tagovailoa by gradual degrees appears more and more in focus to Miami Dolphins fans. Nearer and nearer. More and more real. But he appears less like a quarterback in Alabama red than as a savior in a flowing robe, back-lit by a halo of sunlight. That sound ... are those angels singing? A dispatch from Tanking Central: This is like few seasons ever seen in sports and none ever experienced in South Florida: One team so strategically awful, with one player in mind — and no sacrifice too great to reach that Holy Grail. Perversely, the historically winless Dolphins in the midst of overtly Tanking For Tua might be the biggest story of this NFL season. It has become a national controversy. It has split a fan base with winning versus tanking the wedge. This franchise hasn’t made this much news for being this embarrassing since, well, OK, I would say since knucklehead Richie Incognito was bullying a teammate, except that the offensive line coach caught snorting white powder off his desk happened more recently. But this embarrassment is happening on the field. In the open. It’s being televised! To read my entire recent column, please visit No Sacrifice Too Great For Tanking-For-Tua Dolphins.

Loboslogo NFL PIX 'N FANTASY RESULTS: WEEK 6: WIN, WIN, WIN!: NFL picks -- Pretty great, actually. We deftly navigated an upset-laden week to go 10-4 overall and a terrific 11-3 (!) against the point spread. We nailed another Upset of the Week with 49ers over Rams ("Aawwk!"), bull's-eyed Cardinals' upset of Falcons and hit a third outright upset, though a mini-one (1-point line), with Saints winning at Jaguars. Also had a trio of 'dogs-with-points in Dolphins, Bengals and Steelers. We're having another big season. All abooaarrd! ..... LeBatard Show fantasy (16-team PPR) -- Yes! Greg's Lobos rose to even at 3-3 with an 85.4 to 63.4 spanking of Randy Scott. Got 24.8 from Patrick Mahomes (who's good even when he isn't great) and a nice 20.6 bounceback from Mike Evans. We're tied for sixth of 16 teams and thinking playoffs. ..... Friends n' family fantasy (10-team PPR) -- Yes again! Lobos are now 3-3 with a 139-133 win. Kept the faith in Stefon Diggs and got a 43-point reward. Also cashed 29 from Deshaun Watson. We're tied for fourth place and playoff-hunting. And we get Saquon Barkley back soon. Go 'Bos!

STAR COACH, STAR GOALIE: WILL 2 BIG ADDITIONS BE ENOUGH FOR NHL PANTHERS TO STOP WASTING THE BARKOV YEARS?: It has been something of a running joke in South Florida sports. "This is the Florida Panthers’ year!" Yes, so this feels like about the fifth anniversary of hearing that, right? Every year it’s "but this time we mean it!" And then the NHL season starts and Coachqgradually the hyped-up Cats lose air as inexorably as a helium party balloon. High hopes, ultimate disappointment, rinse, repeat. Nobody is more sick of this treadmill than Dale Tallon, the Panthers’ general manager. "Talk is cheap, so let’s see. Let’s stop talking and start acting," was Tallon’s message to his 2019-20 team. "We’ve got the pieces in place. Everybody is excited. ‘Great summer, great summer.’ Now let’s prove it!" The proving needs to start as fast as a puck leaves a stick for a franchise more accustomed to slow starts. Florida opens its 26th season Thursday night in Tampa Bay and makes its home debut Saturday vs. the same Lightning — owners of the NHL’s best record (by a lot) last season. Tallon’s great summer co-starred the hiring of a new head coach in Joel Quenneville (pictured) and the free agent signing of a new goaltender in Sergei Bobrovsky, a starpower quiniela not to be understated. One is the second-winningest coach in NHL history and a three-time Stanley Cup champion. The other is a five-time all-star and twice has won the Vezina Trophy as hockey’s best goalie. The question: Can the two of them lead the Cats out of their rut and into contention at last? Florida has been wasting the prime of Aleksander Barkov, whom defenseman Keith Yandle calls "one of the best players if not the best player in the world." Time for the Panthers to prove they're ready for a championship run. This is my latest column. To read it in full, please visit Now Or Never For Panthers To Stop Wasting The Barkov Years.

Rilesbutler'CULTURE' ISN'T ENOUGH. THESE 5 FACTORS MUST LIFT HEAT BACK TO CONTENTION: The question put to Erik Spoelstra on Monday was general enough for him to dodge it with veteran-coach ease. He did not. Does he think the Miami Heat can contend in the NBA’s Eastern Conference this season? "We do," he answered, quickly. "Unequivocally so." But how? How does a franchise trying to shed its post-Big 3 era malaise of three missed playoffs in the past five years turn it around so dramatically? How does a team starting a season without Dwyane Wade for the first time since 2002 pull off the big reboot? I explore in my newest column, and list five factors that must go right for Miami to be East contenders in the mix for top-four seed. Pictured: Pat Riley after introducing Jimmy Butler at a recent news conference. To read my full recent column and see what those five keys to the upcoming season are, kindly visit 'Culture' Isn't Enough. It'll Take These 5 Factors to Lift Miami Heat.

Picks LoboslogoNFL PIX 'N FANTASY RESULTS: WEEK 4: NFL picks--Head above water. We did OK in a tough week, going 9-6 overall and 8-7 against the spread. That included another Upset of the Week bull's-eye ("Aawwk!") with Saints over Cowboys, a second outright upset hit with Jaguars winning in Denver, and a trio of 'dogs-with-points in Bills, Lions and Buccaneers. LeBatard Show fantasy--Don't ask. Greg's Lobos dropped to 2-2, falling to unbeaten Izzy Gutierrez, 120.6-93.2. Rough. Mike Evans led us with 18.9 and Patrick Mahomes turned mortal with 18. Shady McCoy chipped in 16.9 but not much else went right. Friends n' family fantasy--No again! Lobos now 1-3 after an embarrassing 143-85 loss. What am I, the Dolphins!? Four starters in single figures and a leading scorer with only 18 (Dalvin Cook) won't win you many games. The Saquon Barkley curse sets in.
