TuadolOUR LATEST COLUMN: DOLPHINS AIM HIGH, WIN BIG WITH TUA TAGOVAILOA PICK

POLL RESULT: MIAMI L-O-V-E-S THE TUA PICK: We asked, "What do you think of the Dolphins making Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa their first pick (fifth overall) in the 2020 NFL Draft?" The verdict? A huge thumbs up. Grade A/Love it drew 72.19 percent and Grade B/Now pray he stays healthy had 17.75%. That's nearly 90% who graded A or B. Naysayers were few, with Grade D/Should-a gone Herbert at 5.92%and Grade C/Risky for a pick that high at 4.14%.

COTE BEATS KIPER!: I am not saying my Mock Draft was better than Mel's. I am saying, simply and accurately, that my mock had seven Exactos -- right player to right team -- and his had six. Boo-ya!

HOT BUTTON TOP 10 (APRIL 26-27): WHAT SOUTH FLORIDA SPORTS FANS ARE TALKING ABOUT: Our blog-exclusive Sunday-into-Monday feature is part week-in-review, part look-ahead. Hot Button means what's on our minds, locally and nationally, from a Miami perspective, as the (non)sports week just past pivots to the week ahead. This week's HB10:

HButton1. DOLPHINS: With fingers crossed, Miami lands Tagovailoa with top pick: Smartly, I say, the Fins gambled on Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa and his injury history with the fifth pick of the NFL draft, getting (they hope) their first real franchise passer since Dan Marino. Miami also fortified his protection with three OL picks including tackle Austin Jackson. Five defensive players were drafted as well among the 11 overall picks. Also include in this draft the trade for running back Matt Breida from the 49ers. He's 25, with 1,902 rush yards and a fat 5.0 average. He'll push Jordan Howard for the start. Call it a solid B-grade draft -- a grade that could grow if Tua stays healthy and lives up to sky-high hopes.

2. NFL: Burrow No. 1 in surprisingly smooth virtual draft: Joe Burrow to the Bengals led three quarterbacks chosen in the first six picks of the three-day NFL Draft. This year, the players selected were secondary to the circumstances: A virtual draft taking place remotely from living rooms across America because of the coronavirus stay-at-home edicts. Commissioner Roger Goodell orchestrated the proceedings from his basement den in New York. There were a few random appearances by family dogs but, astonishingly, no embarrassing technological glitches.

3. CORONAVIRUS: The updated South Florida Games-Lost Tracker: The SFGLT updates you each week on how many local pro sports games have been lost to the coronavirus shutdown. Through today/Sunday -- 66 games lost: Marlins 28, Heat 19, Panthers 13, Inter Miami 6. Marlins have missed first 28 games of regular season. Heat missed last 17 games of season and at least two first-round playoff games based on NBA standings when season stopped. Panthers missed last 13 season games but would not have made playoffs based on NHL standings at time of stoppage. Inter Miami, after playing first two games of season, has missed last six.

4. GOLF: Tiger vs. Phil 2.0 (with friends) is on for May: A Tiger Woods-Phil Mickelson rematch is planned for May, perhaps Memorial Day weekend -- this time with quarterback buddies Tom Brady and Peyton Manning joining them. "The Match: Champions for Charity" will benefit coronavirus relief, from an undisclosed location without spectators. A Florida course is thought likely. Remember, fellas: Social distancing and no hand shaking!

5. ROB GRONKOWSKI: Gronk unretires to rejoin Brady: Did the ad read, 'Partying tight end for rent'? Gronkowski was lured out of retirement to rejoin Tom Brady in TB12's reincarnation as a Tampa Bay Buc. Even sweeter: Bill Belichick's Pats got only a fourth-round pick for him. Let's go Tompa!

6. MLB: Red Sox punished for sign stealing, too: OK it wasn't just the Astros. MLB concluded Boston also stole signs during its 2018 World Series title run. It suspended Boston's video replay system operator without pay for a year and took away a second-round draft pick. Manager Alex Cora, whom the Red Sox fired in January, previously was suspended for the year for his role in Houston's 2017 sign-stealing scandal, when he was bench coach.

7. INTER MIAMI: David Beckham raffling himself for charity: The charismatic former England captain and current co-owner of MLS' Inter Miami is giving fans a chance to play a five-a-side charity match with him and raise funds to help feed those in need during the coronavirus pandemic. The offer is part of the "All In Challenge" in which athletes and celebrities come up with fan experiences to raise dough. Winner also gets lunch with Becks and a spot in the owners suite for an Inter Miami match.

8. A-ROD & J-LO: Power couple's increasing interest in Mets: Seems betrothed power couple Alex Rodriguez and Jennifer Lopez are increasingly serious about actually buying the New York Mets. Fun sidebar to that: A-Rod and Marlins CEO Derek Jeter being NL East rivals to intensify their famously "frenemies" relationship.

9. NHL: Hockey toying with four-city plan to resume: Puck commish Gary Bettman said NHL is exploring a four-city plan to restart the 2019-20 season, which was paused March 12. Arenas would be places that are not coronavirus hot spots, with home rinks of Carolina, Edmonton and Minnesota three mentioned. Bettman said he "presumes [there] wouldn't be fans."

10. NASCAR: Florida, Texas jockeying to resume racing first: Where will the gentlemen start their engines first? Texas Gov. Greg Abbott tweeted NASCAR is working with Texas Motor Speedway on a plan to race there, sans spectators, while Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has spoken with NASCAR about resuming races at Daytona and at Homestead-Miami Speedway. So. Which state will get the checkered flag?

Missing the HB10 cut: Greg Cote outmocks Mel Kiper Jr! You read that right. I had 7 "exacto" picks in my first round to Mel's 6. Boo-ya! ..... The Greg Cote Show podcast, new Episode 9, is out Monday morning. Pluggin' it! ..... Only four Canes got drafted: LB Shaq Quarterman (4th round), RB DeeJay Dallas (4th), WR K.J. Osborn (5th) and DE Jonathan Garvin (7th). The former NFL pipeline leader is now Day 3 U. ..... Is football season in doubt? NFL Players Association director DeMaurice Smith called mass testing crucial for returning to football, while University of Arizona's president said she doubts the college season will happen .... Money-first Dana White and UFC will hold three no-fans events at an undisclosed Florida location beginning May 9 ..... Showtime has ex-NFL QB Mark Sanchez in a new digital series talking with top quarterbacks in this draft. Wait a second. Isn't that like putting top thespians in an acting roundtable hosted by Adam Sandler? ..... Chris Paul says NBA players would need at least three weeks' prep time before  returning ..... Notre Dame women's hoops coach Muffet McGraw retired after 33 seasons. Most successful Muffet ever? ..... Parts 3 and 4 of ESPN's 10-part Michael Jordan docuseries hit the screen Sunday night. I was a skeptic, but parts 1-2 reeled me in ..... Two New York fans are suing baseball over lack of ticket refunds due to canceled games. Wow. Even if their claim is legally legit, oh what a bad look! ..... Novak Djokovic, who is anti-vaccine, said he faces dilemma if tennis requires players to get vaccinated before they can return to competing. Dear Novak: Move on in to the 21st Century and give science a shot ..... Update: Countdown now 2,254 days (give or take) until Miami hosts its first match in soccer's 2026 World Cup. Hopefully we're allowing large crowds to gather by then.

MiadolCOLUMN: DOLPHINS AIM HIGH, WIN BIG WITH TUA TAGOVAILOA PICK

POLLS: GRADE DOLPHINS FIRST-ROUND PICK!
:
We have a Dolphins draft poll on the top pick -- QB Tua Tagovailoa, fifth overall.

MockHOW WE DID ON OUR 29th ANNUAL NFL MOCK DRAFT, PICK BY PICK: Our 29th Official Miami Herald NFL Mock Draft lists our forecasts for the entire first round Thursday night, including all three Miami Dolphins picks (scheduled as 5th, 18th and 26th overall). To read our full analysis with capsules on each selection, plus Super Bonus Draft Facts, please visit Greg Cote's 2020 NFL Mock Draft. And here is my draft preview column: Hackers, Barking Dogs, Crazy Pressure: Why Virtual NFL Draft IS Biggest Ever For Dolphins. Follow here along Thursday/tonight as we grade how we did, pick by pick, below:

BullseyeRED BULL'S-EYE =
Exacto! Perfect pick -- exact player to exact team.

CheckmarkGREEN CHECK MARK = Partial hit. Had player in round but not to right team.

XmarkBLACK 'X' MARK = Strikeout. Player was not selected in first round.

My mock pick / Team's actual selection

Bullseye1. Cincinnati Bengals: Joe Burrow, QB, LSU / As expected, Burrow. Never a doubt. So much for that big trade-up by the Dolphins.

Bullseye2. Washington Redskins: Chase Young, DE, Ohio State / Another no-brainer. If only the rest of the first round were this easy.

Bullseye3. Detroit Lions: Jeff Okudah, CB, Ohio State / Wow, no trade. We're 3-for-3 and it looks like the Fins are sticking at 5.

Checkmark4. New York Giants: Isaiah Simmons, OLB, Clemson / A surprise with OT Andrew Thomas, whom I had going 14th overall.

Bullseye5. MIAMI DOLPHINS: TUA TAGOVAILOA, QB, ALABAMA / It's Tua. I love LOVE getting the Fins pick right! Column coming.

Bullseye6. Los Angeles Chargers: Justin Herbert, QB, Oregon / It's Herbert. I am en fuego in my mock so far!

Bullseye7. Carolina Panthers: Derrick Brown, DT, Auburn / Brown. Another one right. Pinch me! No, not literally. Keep your social distance.

Checkmark8. Arizona Cardinals: Jedrick Wills Jr., OT, Alabama / Oh well. They took Simmons, whom I had going 4th overall.

Bullseye9. Jacksonville Jaguars: C.J. Henderson, CB, Florida / Henderson gets us back on the Bull's-Eye Train!

Checkmark10. Cleveland Browns: Mekhi Becton, OT, Louisville / They took Wills, whom I had going two spots earlier.

Checkmark11. New York Jets: Jerry Jeudy, WR, Alabama / So close. They took Becton, whom I had going one spot earlier.

Checkmark12. Las Vegas Raiders: CeeDee Lamb, WR, Oklahoma / Close again. Right position. They took Ruggs, whom I had going one spot later.

Checkmark13. TRADE: Tampa Bay, from San Francisco: Henry Ruggs III, WR, Alabama / Bucs take OT Wirfs, whom I had going 18th to Fins.

Checkmark14. TRADE: San Francisco, from Tampa Bay: Andrew Thomas, OT, Georgia / 49ers take Kinlaw, whom I had going 27th.

Checkmark15. Denver Broncos: Justin Jefferson, WR, LSU /Right position. Pick is Jeudy, whom I had going 11th overall.

Checkmark16. Atlanta Falcons: K’Lavon Chaisson, OLB, LSU / They picked the CB Terrell, whom I had going 31st overall.

Checkmark17. Dallas Cowboys : Xavier McKinney, S, Alabama / They picked WR Lamb, whom I had going 12th overall.

Xmark18. MIAMI DOLPHINS: TRISTAN WIRFS, OT, IOWA / Right position. Fins take OT Austin Jackson of USC, whom I did not have going in the first round. A reach by Miami or a misfire by me? Mel Kiper had Jackson as his 48th ranked overall prospect, which translates to second round. (Wirfs went 13th to Bucs).

Xmark19. Las Vegas Raiders: Jordan Love, QB Utah State / Pick is Damon Arnette, Ohio State CB. Did not have him in my first round.

Checkmark20. Jacksonville Jaguars: Brandon Aiyuk, WR, Arizona State / They got Chaisson, whom I had going a bit sooner, at 16th.

Xmark21. Philadelphia Eagles: Tee Higgins, WR, Clemson / Right position, wrong player. TCU WR Jalen Reagor was not in my first round.

Checkmark22. Minnesota Vikings: Trevon Diggs, CB, Alabama / Took the WR Jefferson, whom I had going earlier, 15th overall.

Checkmark23. TRADE: L.A. Chargers, from New England: A.J. Epenesa, DE, Iowa / Bolts take the LB Murray, whom I had going 28th.

Xmark24. New Orleans Saints: Patrick Queen, ILB, LSU / N'Awlins took C/G Cesar Ruiz, whom I did not have in my first round.

Checkmark25. TRADE: San Francisco, from Minnesota: Yetur Gross-Matos, DE, Penn State / 49ers select WR Aiyuk, whom I had going 20th overall.

Checkmark26. TRADE: Green Bay, from Miami: D'Andre Swift, RB, Georgia / Pack trades, get QB Love as Aaron Rodgers successor. Had Love going 19th.

Xmark27. Seattle Seahawks: Javon Kinlaw, DT, South Carolina / Take LB Jordyn Brooks from Texas Tech, not in my first round.

Checkmark28. Baltimore Ravens: Kenneth Murray, ILB, Oklahoma / Crows take LB Queen, whom I had going a bit sooner, 24th overall.

Xmark29. Tennessee Titans: Zack Baun, OLB, Wisconsin / Take OT Isaiah Wilson, whom I did not have in my first round.

Xmark30. TRADE: MIAMI, FROM GREEN BAY: Michael Pittman, WR, USC / Dolphins get CB Noah Igbinoghene of Auburn, who was not in my first round.

Xmark31. TRADE: MInnesota, from San Francisco: A.J. Terrell, CB, Clemson / Vikes get CB Jeff Gladney, who was not in my first round.

Xmark32. Kansas City Chiefs: Jonathan Taylor, RB, Wisconsin / Right position, wrong guy. Champs take LSU RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire.

WHY DOLPHINS ARE STICKING WITH TAGOVAILOA DESPITE RISK. OUR 29TH ANNUAL MIAMI HERALD MOCK DRAFT: Generations of Miami Dolphins fans have grown up, and in many cases grown old, waiting for this. If that is hyperbole, it isn’t by much. With three first round picks for the first time in franchise history and a league-leading 14 selections overall, this week’s NFL Tua NfldraftDraft finds the Fins in the national spotlight in a way they haven’t been since a young Dan Marino was leading the team to its most recent Super Bowl. That was after the 1984 season. I’m not counting Bullygate or that time the offensive line coach showed up in a video snorting coke off his desk. I mean a good spotlight. I mean a chance to start winning again and get back to a time when the playoffs were expected every year. I mean this club drafting its first true franchise quarterback since Marino in 1983. His name is Tuanigamanuolepoia Tagovailoa. Save time. Call him Tua. (He is pictured). I believe NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, from the basement of his New York home during this coronavirus draft, will call his name for the Dolphins with the fifth overall pick Thursday night, or perhaps with the third after a small trade-up. This is the NFL’s 84th draft and the league’s first during a stay-at-home pandemic; the Dolphins’ 55th draft, and my 29th annual official Miami Herald mock draft. The past three years my mocks have featured 15 bull’s-eyes (exact player to exact team), not bad considering our mocking is a two-day flurry involving tarot cards and tea leaves, a glorified guessfest, not a year-round industry like it is for Mel Kiper Jr. and that ilk. Heck, my idea of film study is watching old Hitchcock movies. I simply cross reference every team’s needs with best available players and let the darts fly. We do one mock draft and one only, and do not pretend to foretell draft-day trades. All I guarantee is that, for the 29th straight year, I will correctly get every first-round pick in exact numerical order, 1 through 32. Let’s go! Please visit Greg Cote's 2020 NFL Mock Draft for the complete first round including all three of Miami's picks.

HOT BUTTON TOP 10 (APRIL 19-20): WHAT SOUTH FLORIDA SPORTS FANS ARE TALKING ABOUT: Our blog-exclusive Sunday-into-Monday feature is part week-in-review, part look-ahead. Hot Button means what's on our minds, locally and nationally, from a Miami perspective, as the (non)sports week just past pivots to the week ahead. This week's HB10:

HButton1. DOLPHINS: Only four days 'til Miami selects [fill in the blank]: The NFL Draft begins Thursday night with the Fins holding the fifth, 18th and 26th picks in the first round -- but will it be Tua Tagovailoa, Justin Herbert or a surprise to Miami at No. 5? In this case "surprise" is defined as, "What!? They didn't take a quarterback first!? You've got to be @#$%ing kidding me!" Tua, by the way, is reported to have scored a very low 13 on the Wonderlic intelligence test given all draft prospects. No worry. He's being hired to throw a football, not to explain the quantum physics of how atoms work.

2. NFL: Draft is on as scheduled ... but hardly as usual: Joe Burrow expected to go No. 1 overall to Cincy hasn't changed and the dates are the same. But nothing else is. The seven-round draft is Thursday through Saturday, but commissioner Roger Goodell will be reading picks from his home in New York, teams will be making them from their own cities, and players will be spread across the country in their living rooms -- all of it televised via videos. Welcome to the Bizarro World, Pandemic Edition NFL Draft.

3. CORONAVIRUS: The updated South Florida Games-Lost Tracker: The SFGLT updates you each week on how many local pro sports games have been lost to the coronavirus shutdown. Through today/Sunday -- 58 games lost: Marlins 22, Heat 18, Panthers 13, Inter Miami 5. Marlins have missed first 22 games of regular season. Heat has missed last 17 games of season and would already have hosted first-round playoff game Sunday night, based on NBA standings when season stopped. Panthers missed last 13 season games but would not have made playoffs based on NHL standings at time of stoppage. Inter Miami, after playing first two games of season, has missed last five.

4. ANTHONY FAUCI: Virus expert maps out return of sports: Hugely trusted Dr. Anthony Fauci, America's leading infectious diseases expert and the face of the U.S. coronavirus fight, says this on the foreseeable resumption of sports: "Nobody comes to the stadium. Put [players] in big hotels, wherever you want to play. Have them tested like every week and make sure they don’t wind up infecting each other or their family and just let them play the season out." In other words, it'll be awhile before you're going to games again, Joe Fan.

5. ESPN: Much-touted Jordan docu-series begins Sunday: NBA fans are swooning in anticipation of the 10-part "The Last Dance" series, documenting Michael Jordan and the 1997-98 Chicago Bulls season. I'm not all that excited, but since I get a Disney/ESPN check every week, I think it's going to be greeaat!

6. VON MILLER: Broncos star tested positive for virus: Denver Pro Bowl linebacker Von Miller has tested positive for the coronavirus, becoming perhaps the most prominent active sports star to do so.

7. NBA: Ouch. Withheld pay is near: Commissioner Adam Silver said there still is no timetable for a resumption of the season, while the NBA begins reducing player paychecks by 25 percent on May 15. Fellas, let me check my wallet. If things get tight, just ask, OK? In other league news, Utah's Mike Conley won that ridiculous HORSE tournament that I'm proud to say I watched for a grand total of, like, 10 seconds. And the NBA is now selling (of course!) team-logo face coverings.

8. HURRICANES: Mompremier taken in WNBA Draft: Miami's 6-4 power forward Beatrice Mompremier went in the second round, 20th overall to the Los Anegles Sparks -- lower than expected because of a January foot injury that cost her half of her senior season.

9. NASCAR: Rising star Larson fired for racial slur: Chip Ganassi Racing fired budding star Kyle Larson and sponsors dropped him left and right after he was heard using the n-word during a live-streamed virtual race. Unannounced but surely planned: An I'm-truly-sorry tour and an eventual second chance. Meanwhile, NASCAR still hopes to resume no-fans racing in May.

10. GOLF: PGA Tour plots summer return: The PGA Tour is planning a mid-June return with no fans, assuring the look and ambiance of it will have all the excitement of a Tuesday practice round. Meantime, GolfTV reported exclusively that the gum Tiger Woods chews on a golf course is orange-flavored Trident. Run to the store and start hoarding!

Missing the HB10 cut: Our 29th annual Official Miami Herald NFL Mock Draft is coming. Watch for it online Tuesday. OH, and the Greg Cote Show podcast, new Episode 8, is out Monday morning! Please listen, subscribe, rate, review and stay home ..... MLB's Arizona Plan, with all 30 teams playing sans fans in Phoenix, remains the top likelihood. So bizarre ..... Jacksonville mayor Lenny Curry has reopened city beaches, generating a wide range of reaction dominated by, "Jesus, what an idiot!" ..... Please remember to watch your hands often, practice social distancing and keep booing the sign-stealing Astros ..... Update: Countdown now 2,261 days (give or take) until Miami hosts its first match in soccer's 2026 World Cup. Hopefully we're all done with quarantine by then.

DOLPHINS GM GRIER SAYS TEAM 'HAS AN IDEA' ON NO. 5 PICK IN NFL DRAFT. HE BETTER BE RIGHT: Chris Grier is just about a Miami Dolphins lifer as he begins his 20th season with the club and fourth as roster-shaping general manager. Now, with the team owning three first-round picks in next week’s NFL Draft for the first time, and a league-leading 14 picks overall, Grier has Cgriernever had a bigger spotlight on him. Or a hotter one. The opportunity and results will illuminate Grier as a bright, rising young GM if he nails it, or burn him and leave permanent professional scars if he doesn’t. The coronavirus has limited ability to directly meet with prospects, but that’s true of all teams. There will be no excuse for bad choices. Draft night will be a very different, technological challenge, but, again, no excuses. “We really don’t have any apprehension about this process,” he said. Way back when, Grier happened to have majored in journalism at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. So when he hopped on a coronavirus-age predraft video conference call with media on Thursday, he knew precisely what to do: Say as little meaningful as possible. In a 20-minute remote chat with 53 invited journalists, Grier steadfastly offered no real hint, to reporters or to rival teams, as to the Dolphins’ thinking or intentions entering the April 23-25 draft, which also will be done remotely amid the stay-home orders caused by the COVID-19 threat. Grier wasn’t the general manager Thursday. He was closer to the Minister of No Information. He did admit, “We have an idea of who we like” for the top pick, but would not acknowledge what most everyone would bet their life savings on — that Miami almost surely will target a quarterback with the No. 5 overall pick, and that Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa and Oregon’s Justin Herbert (or vice versa) are the primary, likeliest possibilities. He admitted the onus is on him — and on owner Stephen Ross, coach Brian Flores, new offensive coordinator Chan Gailey and the rest of the Fins decision makers, to get this right. Very right. For our full latest column, please visit Dolphins' Grier Says He Has An Idea On Top Pick. He'd Better Be Right.

CORONAVIRUS, TUA MAKE THIS DOLPHINS' WEIRDEST, BIGGEST, MOST INTERESTING DRAFT EVER: The bell has rung. It’s the 10-day countdown (now nine) to the NFL Draft and, astonishingly, all of the following statements are true to various degrees of arguably-so to absolutely-certain: This 85th NFL Draft will be the weirdest of them all. This 55th Miami Dolphins Tuadraft will be the most interesting in franchise history. The most important, too. And the most pressure filled. Oh, and Tua Tagovailoa (pictured) — whom the Dolphins should either be wisely targeting or should avoid like somebody standing too close and coughing, depending on one’s point view — is a figure of controversy and wildly differing opinions such as few drafts have ever seen. Not counting Bullygate or other intermittent pratfalls like an offensive line coach snorting cocaine from his office desk, the Dolphins have not been the center of NFL attention probably since Dan Marino led them into their most recent Super Bowl appearance to end the 1984 season. But all eyes will be back on this usually off-radar team the night of April 23 as Miami sits at the poker table with the tallest stack of chips — three first-round picks, the fifth, 18th and 26th overall, and a league-leading 14 picks overall — in club history. And as Miami covets, most believe, the all-or-nothing risk named Tua. That means all eyes will be on the front-office team of owner Stephen Ross, general manager Chris Grier and coach Brian Flores, the triumvirate with much to prove and now tasked with making the once-proud Dolphins matter again, and reanimating a large but worn down fandom. To read our full recent column, please visit Coronavirus, Tua Make This Dolphins' Weirdest, Most Interesting Draft Ever.

HOT BUTTON TOP 10 (APRIL 12-13): WHAT SOUTH FLORIDA SPORTS FANS ARE TALKING ABOUT: Our blog-exclusive Sunday-into-Monday feature is part week-in-review, part look-ahead. Hot Button means what's on our minds, locally and nationally, from a Miami perspective, as the (non)sports week just past pivots to the week ahead. This week's HB10:

HButton1. CORONAVIRUS: Introducing the South Florida Games-Lost Tracker: The SFGLT will update you each week on how many local pro sports games have been lost to the coronavirus shutdown. Through today/Sunday -- 49 games lost: Marlins 17, Heat 15, Panthers 13, Inter Miami 4. Heat would have two games left in NBA regular season. NHL would have finished regular season and been in first round of Stanley Cup playoffs. Marlins and Inter would be early in their seasons.

2. MLB: A startup with every team playing in Phoenix?: It was reported baseball is considering beginning its delayed season as soon as May with all 30 teams playing in and around Phoenix, with no fans of course. Sure, Rob Manfred, yes. Separating players from their families for 4 1/2 months in the middle of a deadly pandemic sounds like a greeeaaat idea! Other options being mulled including realignment for an abbreviated season, with all games at the teams' Florida or Arizona spring training sites, and playing the season in (!) Japan.

3. TOM BRADY: New Bucs' QB finds a famous home in Tampa: The G.O.A.T QB wrote a long piece for The Players Tribune that thanked everybody in New England except Bill Belichick, then said there's no beef there as the entire country said in unison, "Yeah, right!" Brady later appeared on Howard Stern, admitted his marriage to Giselle went through a rough patch two years ago, and discussed Gronk's penis. Oh, and (seriously) Tom has filed trademark patents to the phrases "Tompa Bay" and "Tampa Brady." Busy week!

4. TUA TAGOVAILOA: Tua would like you to know he's healthy: The former Alabama QB (and potential Dolphins pick at fifth overall later this month) sent a personal workout video to all 32 teams, in lieu of individual team workouts wiped out by the coronavirus. Everybody including his two surgeons swear he'll be good to go when (or if) training camps open. The only doubters seem to be media curmudgeons and attention-seeking analysts.

5. NBA: Hey it's a H-O-R-S-E tournament!: The NBA regular season should be ending and the playoffs about to begin. Instead, Houston's Devin Booker won the NBA 2k tourney, and now, starting Sunday, we get eight people playing the backyard game of H-O-R-S-E. And it's on ESPN! Oh my L-O-R-D. NBA stars Chris Paul and Trae Young are co-betting faves, verifying that yes you can bet on anything. Also playing: Mike Conley and Zach Levine, retirees Paul Pierce and Chauncey Billups, WNBA star Allie Quigley and retired Tamika Catchings. Meanwhile reports are a majority of NBA teams want the June 25 draft postponed.

6. MLB: Hey it's a video game season!: A "season" is underway in which one player from each team (Marlins' rep is reliever Ryne Stanek) play each other in the MLB The Show video games. It's a 29-game season, with top eight making the playoffs. You can watch the games on Twitch. (Note to self: Find out what in the hell Twitch is).

7. NFL: Brandin Cooks dealt in (semi) major trade: The Rams traded receiver Brandin Cooks to the Texans for a second-round draft pick, after Houston had earlier traded away star wideout DeAndre Hopkins. Cook's good. But he ain't no Hopkins. Meantime, Cowboys Dak Prescott and Zeke Elliott reportedly were partying during a pandemic. If so, they a--holes.

8. OLYMPICS: Might even delayed Games be in doubt for 2021?: The Tokyo Olympics CEO said the Summer Games, postponed a full year, might not even happen in 2021 unless there is a coronavirus vaccine by then.

9. UFC: Dana White relents, gives in to pandemic: Brick-headed UFC boss Dana White finally relented and agreed his upcoming April 18 show on a "private island" would not happen, and that other fight cards would be postponed indefinitely. Why the change of heart? UFC's sugar daddy, ESPN/Disney, insisted.

10. HORSE RACING: 50 cents becomes half-million for lucky bettor: An off-track bettor turned a 50-cent Pick 5 bet into a $524,966.50 payday off Saturday card at Gulfstream Park, raising the question: So I guess horse racing is an "essential business," huh state of Florida, Broward County and city of Hallandale? Shameful.

Missing the HB10 cut: The Greg Cote Show podcast, new Episode 7, is out Monday morning! Please listen, subscribe, rate, review and stay home ..... R.I.P. Colby Cave, 25. The Edmonton OIler died following brain surgery ..... Today would be the final round of The Masters at Augusta had it not been postponed by the coronavirus. Let us take poetic license and imagine Tiger Woods in a blood-red shirt with a three-shot lead ..... The Heat's Derrick Jones Jr.'s Cinderella run in the NBA 2K players tournament ended in the quarterfinals ..... The British Open canceled, as expected ..... Ronda Rousey says she left WWE because of the ungrateful fans ..... The XFL laid off almost all of its staff and has no plans to return in 2021, surprising absolutely no one. R.I.P., XFL (2020-2020 1/2) ..... A bat used by Lou Gehrig sold for $1 million. There is only one baseball bat in the world worth $1 million. It's the one with a check for $999,000 taped to the barrel ..... Oklahoma State football coach Mike Gundy, a coronavirus denier who wants his players back at work May 1, shows every sign of being what psychologists call "a flaming idiot" ..... Some are more concerned than Gundy. A Seton Hall University poll found 72 percent of Americans said they would not attend sporting events again until a vaccine is developed ..... The good thing about no baseball? The sign-stealing Astros can't cheat ..... Update: Countdown now 2,268 days (give or take) until Miami hosts its first match in soccer's 2026 World Cup, by which time hopefully we're all out of the house.

BigtwoTHE NEW PIE CHART OF QB POSSIBILITIES  FOR A DOLPHINS FRANCHISE THAT BETTER GET IT RIGHT: The snake-bit Miami Dolphins have been among league leaders in unlucky for 20 years, augmented by a sad parade of bad decisions and ill-fated coaching hires. Now — even as the Fins have the most picks including three in the first round and fans dare dip a toe into the optimism pool — the upcoming NFL Draft is somehow the latest example of how "Can’t Catch A Break" should be this franchise’s official motto. Think about it. 1) They spend all last season in deftly orchestrated "Tanking for Tua" mode, trading their best players to accumulate a stockpile of draft picks while losing enough to accrue the No. 5 overall pick. Brilliant! Except the Cincinnati Bengals out-tank the Dolphins, get the No. 1 pick and the rights to draft grand prize quarterback Joe Burrow of LSU. 2) Miami still has a great chance to draft the originally coveted Tua Tagovailoa of Alabama. OK, good! Except he sustains a hip injury late in his college career, the most serious but hardly the only issue that makes some wonder warily about his health and durability. 3) Tagovailoa appears fit and ready to go as the draft nears. The player’s doctor says he is "extremely pleased." The agent says, "Tua is fully cleared and ready to compete without any restrictions." Tua himself: "I’m 100 percent right now." Great. What a relief! Except the coronavirus/COVID-19 threat that has changed everything these days prevents teams from personally visiting with and giving team physicals to prospective players in advance of the April 23-25 draft being held in Las Vegas with no fans; thus Miami must trust what others are saying and videos of Tua throwing. So, yes, to your list of things that have made the Dolphins snake-bit, you may now add: Global pandemic. For our full latest column -- including a pie chart likelihood of what Miami will do with its first pick -- please visit A Pie Chart of QB Possibilities For Dolphins. Top candidates Tagovailoa (right) and Justin Herbert are pictured.

WHY BASEBALL'S BIZARRE PLAN TO RESUME GAMES WOULD BE UNFAIR TO PLAYERS: Sports is feeling its way through this thing, arms stretched out and small, hesitant steps in a pitch-black room. When to resume and how? Fans? No fans? Leagues plot their resumption awkwardly, inconsistently, with no template or map to rely on. Clemson’s Dabo Swinney (who flew his private jet Rob Manfredto Florida for vacation in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic) says he has "no doubt" college football will start on time with packed stadiums. ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit says he would be "shocked" if the college or NFL seasons were played at all. Somebody is way wrong. Nobody can be sure of anything right now. The Summer Olympics, Wimbledon and the British Open all cancel for the year and postpone entirely until 2021 — but now Major League Baseball and commissioner Rob Manfred (pictured) are considering a plan to resume games in May? Somebody is way wrong. Nobody knows anything. Unprecedented circumstances. No neat end-date to when COVID-19 will no longer be a threat to kill us, or perhaps recur if we all get back to normal too soon. In a pitch-black room, one is never quite sure what the next step should be. Commerce is in play. It can become a money vs. health issue. President Donald Trump wants desperately to "reopen" the country and reignite a sinking U.S. economy, while his medical advisers are more cautious in saying the stay-at-home edict is saving lives. We find the same conundrum in sports — with baseball now the prime example with its controversial new plan to resume games soon, with all 30 teams playing in the Phoenix area, with no fans. Baseball in a bubble. To read our full recent column, please visit Why MLB's 'Phoenix Plan' to Resume Games Is Unfair to Players.

ShaqqUPCOMING NFL DRAFT WILL OFFER BLUNT VERDICT ON MIAMI HURRICANES' TALENT LEVEL: Miami will be a center of attention like never before in the upcoming NFL Draft, holding three first-round picks picks like a poker player holds aces — only the 22nd time in 85 drafts that one team has had that triple play. And it’s a first for the Dolphins, who last had even two first round picks way back in Don Shula’s 1992. Meanwhile the other Miami — the one that used to dominate NFL Drafts as a gushing pipeline to the pros — will be largely silent once again. The Miami Hurricanes have become mostly a nonfactor to pro scouts who once swooned over the talent that bloomed every year out of Coral Gables. It is cause and effect, the most accurate reflection of the overall downturn of a Canes program that won the last of its five national championship in 2001 and has spent two decades trying to rediscover its mojo. College football fans and Your Friend the Media spend way too much time analyzing a school’s annual recruiting class and believing grades and rankings, when in fact they are closer to a guess than gospel. A far greater gauge of how successful a college team has recruited comes not in the summation of the 18-year-olds arriving, but three years later when they are 21-year-olds put under the NFL microscope. Pictured: Shaq Quarterman, who was a four-year starter at UM, but whose draft grade suggests he'll be a late-round pick. For our full recent column on the Canes' very modest outlook in the April 23-25 draft, please visit NFL Draft Will Offer Blunt Verdict on Canes' Talent.

HOT BUTTON TOP 10 (APRIL 5-6): WHAT SOUTH FLORIDA SPORTS FANS ARE TALKING ABOUT: Our blog-exclusive Sunday-into-Monday feature is part week-in-review, part look-ahead. Hot Button means what's on our minds, locally and nationally, from a Miami perspective, as the (non)sports week just past pivots to the week ahead. This week's HB10:

HButton1. CORONAVIRUS: Sports continues its awkward navigation through a pandemic: Donald Trump had a conference call with top league commissioners to discuss when sports might resume but could give no definitive answer. With U.S. leagues trying to figure out when or if to resume, after shutting down and postponing seasons en masse last March 11-12, we are coming up on one month of having to stay at home with no live games to watch. Hey, the COVID-19's rising death toll has surpassed 65,000 worldwide and 8,000 in the U.S. Can we please stop complaining about no sports?

2. NFL: This month's draft on as scheduled: Despite most team general managers wanting a postponement, commissioner Roger Goodell says NFL Draft in Las Vegas will go on April 23-25 as planned, albeit remotely, sans fans. Meantime, owners as expected voted to expand the playoffs from 12 to 14 teams beginning in 2021.

3. GOLF: Tiger vs. Phil 2.0 in the works: Tigers Woods and Phil Mickelson dueled in 2018, Phil winning. Another match is in the works and might include Tom Brady and Peyton Manning, all for charity. Hey, here's another idea. The four of you each wrote a big charitable check and stay  the [bleep} home!

4. PATRIOTS: Robert Kraft does a very good thing: Kraft's private jetliner flew to China and brought back 1.2 million protective masks to aid in America's coronavirus fight. It's the first time in 20 years I haven't felt like booing the Patriots.

5. ESPN: Long-awaited Jordan documentary will air sooner: ESPN is moving up its 10-part Michael Jordan documentary, "The Last Dance," on the Bull's final championship season of 1997-98. It will now commence April 19 in order to sate a sports-starved nation. So that's where we're at? Eagerly awaiting the story of a season from 22 years ago?

6. NBA: Heat's Jones wins opener in video tourney: The NBA 2K Players Tournament began Friday night on ESPN with the Heat's No. 16-seed Derrick Jones Jr.'s Bucks upsetting the Nets' No. 1 seed Kevin Durant's Lakers, 78-62. So this is also where we're at? Ravenously watching a bunch of sequestered players playing a video game? Now the NBA and ESPN are talking about televising a game of H-O-R-S-E among top players. Gawd

7. BASKETBALL: Hall of Fame inducts Kobe, eight more: The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame inducted nine persons on Saturday -- notably the late Kobe Bryant, along with Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett and The Overshadowed Six.

8. TENNIS: Wimbledon erased from 2020 calendar: London's tennis major set for June was not postponed but canceled completely, for the first time since World War II.

9. TOM BRADY: New Bucs' QB finds a famous home in Tampa: Tom Brady is now renting Derek Jeter's mansion in Tampa. Of course he is!

10. GOLF: Will British Open be next to cancel?: Denying reports it would cancel, the British Open said it is weighing options -- meaning it may soon announce it too is canceling. Meantime the U.S. Women's Open postponed until December.

Missing the HB10 cut: The Greg Cote Show podcast, new Episode 6, is out Monday morning! Please listen, subscribe, rate, review and stay home ..... The WNBA has indefinitely pstponed the schedule May 15 start of its 24th season ..... Scripps said it would not hold its annual National Spelling Bee May 24 as planned, leaving a bunch of 13-year-old brainiacs totally c-h-a-g-r-i-n-e-d ..... The men's NCAA Tournament college basketball championship game was to be Monday night, before a pandemic wiped out March Madness ..... WWE's Wrestlemania 36, hosted by Rob Gronkowski, wraps up Sunday in Orlando, with no fans. Why bother? Pay-per-view $$$, of course ..... Major League Soccer is still saying its season will commence May 10. I'll take that bet ..... LSU football coach Ed Orgeron and his wife are divorcing. She gets the house. He gets to keep the gravelly voice ..... The XFL canceled the second half of its inaugural season, and nobody noticed ..... Keep booing the sign-stealing Astros, please. Even while they're staying at home ..... Update: Countdown now 2,275 days (give or take) until Miami hosts its first match in soccer's 2026 World Cup, by which time hopefully we're all out of self-quarantine.

TigernphilNFL DRAFT, TIGER & PHIL ON A GOLF COURSE A BAD LOOK AS CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIUC WORSENS: The Wimbledon tennis tournament has been canceled. Not delayed indefinitely but erased from the calendar. The IOC has postponed the Summer Olympics an entire year until 2021. Meantime in the United States, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell refuses the wishes of most of his own team general managers and says the draft will go on scheduled in three weeks. And Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson are planning a round of golf on an unnamed Florida course, and quarterback buddies Tom Brady and Peyton Manning might join them. This as the NBA and NHL still delude themselves to think their seasons might yet resume, or somehow should. Basketball, hockey, baseball and soccer all envision playing games soon or by summer, albeit likely with no spectators allowed, amid a horror show likely to result in the most American deaths since the more than 400,000 in World War II. Why is U.S. sports not facing this coronavirus/COVID-19 pandemic or taking it as seriously as the rest of the world? Is it a cue from an American federal government that still has not enacted a nationwide stay-at-home order the way some other hard-hit countries have? Is it that such edicts have been left to individual states and that so many, including Florida, have been so slow to act? The idea of Tiger and Phil and Tom and Peyton playing golf at this time is an optics thing. It isn’t a good look. Comes off as tone deaf. Yes, it would raise money for charities fighting the coronavirus. Those four gentlemen writing big checks from their living rooms would do the same. Instead they want to be seen yukking it up and fist-pumping long birdie putts on a golf course? While doctors and nurses are in a relentless national triage? When we’re all supposed to be staying at home except when unavoidable? As the coronavirus death toll metastasizes? While there is a growing outcry that so many golf courses are still open when only “essential businesses” are supposed to be? AS CORONAVIRUS RAGES, TIME FOR SPORTS TO GET REAL AND NOT PRETEND IT'S RESUMING ANYTIME SOONThere seems to be a continuing disconnect between sports and reality. Between leagues hoping to resume their games as soon as possible — perhaps with no fans allowed — and a global pandemic crisis that experts say will get much worse before it begins to ebb. The SportsFlorida Derby horse race ran as scheduled Saturday at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, but with no spectators. It was more than eerie, this ghost race. It was offensive. Broward County and city officials preferred it be canceled or postponed, but there was revenue to be had from television and off-track betting. The optics are bad, if nothing else. Thoroughbreds racing to the finish line, business as usual, amid a surrounding coronavirus/COVID-19 crisis that is killing more and more thousands and threatening millions — the biggest public health crisis since the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic — as underequipped doctors and nurses work valiantly, under siege, in a relentless emergency. Even President Donald Trump, who just recently said he thought the country might "open back up' as soon as April 12 and that he envisioned packed churches on Easter Sunday — words that sounded fancifully unlikely even as they left his mouth — has now faced reality and begun hearing what his medical experts are saying. The response coordinator for the White House Coronavirus Task Force, Dr. Deborah Birx, on NBC’s Today show, estimated 100,000 to 200,000 eventual U.S. deaths, "if we do things almost perfectly," she said, adding. "We’re very worried about every city in the United States." And we’re still talking about resuming games?
