Starting five takes another small collective step

The scrimmage was a tease, with Erik Spoelstra keeping the projected starters together for under four minutes before swapping lineups and teams.

Saturday in Houston, though, Spoelstra went a little longer with the group of Hassan Whiteside, Chris Bosh, Luol Deng, Dwyane Wade and Goran Dragic, not subbing anyone until Justise Winslow and Gerald Green replaced Bosh and Wade with 5:04 left in the first quarter. By then, it was 14-14, and all but Bosh had scored.

The stint to start the second half was a little shorter. with the Rockets outscoring the Heat, 10-8, before Udonis Haslem came in for Whiteside. And that would be all for the starters together, as Gerald Green got all of the minutes for Wade down the stretch.

It's unlikely we'll see much, if any, of the starters together on Sunday night in Atlanta; Wade has made it clear that he's not enthused by playing both ends of back-to-backs in the preseason.

But there's another game Wednesday at home against Washington, and it's likely that Spoelstra will extend the group a little more.
