BROOKS ROBINSON
Brooks Robinson, the great Baltimore Orioles third baseman, has died. I once played in a charity baseball game with him, during which he gave me some sound advice. He was a nice guy, and very funny. RIP, Brooks.

Having read your article, on the plus side, obviously you made it to home base even before field practice started.

Never got to see Mr. Brooks Robinson play live, unfortunately. If his prime playing years took place today, he would be dominating every MLB highlight video. And an all-around class act. RIP, sir.

Funny article, Dave. At a charity golf tournament in Sarasota I met Cleveland Browns Hall of Fame wide receiver Dante "Glue Fingers" Lavelli. His hands were as big and soft as your new baseball glove.

Brooks Robinson was one of my many baseball hero's growing up. These hero's were Gods to me. I worshipped them in imitation and just in life. I pitched all through high school. Freshman year I used a Mickey Mantle signature glove I was given as a gift form Lever Brothers Co. for pitching during a dedication of a new baseball park near their company. I was eleven years old. I used that Mantle glove through Freshman year in high school. When it was time to get a new glove my dad took me to the sporting goods store and I chose a Brooks Robinson signature fielders glove which I still have. My signature glove is exactly like this one.
So many of my childhood hero's like Brooks Robinson have passed. What a third baseman He was. I played a lot of third base when I wasn't pitching. Sad to hear of Brooks Robinson passing. I saw the announcement a couple of days ago.

Grew up in B'more, and I adored Brooksie. He was a special person in addition to being the greatest third baseman the game will ever see. Fans would go to Memorial Stadium just to see him play defense. I choked up when I turned on the O's game yesterday and they were talking about his passing. RIP Brooksie, and thank you.

Favorite line: "Minnie Minoso, who I believe once caught a fly ball hit by Magellan."
Just to show you how old I am (Still younger than The Blog, though), Minnie was one of my heroes as a kid, though he was no spring chicken even then.

I saw him several times late in his career. I liked the Orioles, because we had their AA team before the Senators moved here and became the Rangers. One time I had a seat in the third row right at third base. It rained a little in the first inning, but I didn't care. He made a great play later in the game, so it was entirely worth it.

What childhood hero's do.

I named my son Brooks, after Brooks Robinson. He (my son) is now 47. I had a Brooks Robinson model glove, which I used until college, when it fell apart from overuse. When my son was born I sent Brooks Robinson a letter telling him I named my son after him. A few weeks later I received an autographed picture from him, which I still have.
Sometimes your childhood heroes turn out to be...heroes.

I never got into baseball, but I do enjoy reading your tributes. Thanks, guys.

Some of you may find this interesting. By the magic of inserting man tom in every instance which mentioned my name the magic happens. I remember this like it was yesterday. The game was close. The opposing pitcher had no front teeth. I remember the ball coming of my bat as I broke the heart of my opponents.
I can not remember exactly how I came across this write up of a game I pitched, and won, in high school in 1973.
St. Louis Post Dispatch
My team 7 Opponents 1
There is one pitch that Bono wishes he hadn't made. It's a pitch that stands out like Bono's missing front teeth. It's a pitch he made to man tom. No runs had scored when man tom stepped to the plate. There were two runners on base, but there were two outs. Soon there were two strikes and no balls on man tom. Two high fastballs had been missed by man tom. But the third pitch, a high curve ball, wasn't missed. Man tom slashed the pitch down the leftfield line for a two run double.
*I remember missing those first two fastballs. It just made me mad.

You did not comment on baseball players chewing tobacco, spitting sunflower seeds, and just spitting. Although not mentioned, you probably picked up those habits just because ... well, you were there. So I can imagine what the area around the Captain's chair on the bridge at the DBBlog headquarters looks like. Can see why judi moved on to Coca Cola. By the way, who cleans up after you now? Bet you will be hard pressed to find somebody who will clean up your messes and edit your prose. Maybe Rrooks' advice to you should have been something like "Stick to writing kid."

Great photo, Dave! And thanks for linking to your hilarious article! Baseball is still my favorite sport to play, although I no longer have my glove with my maiden name written on it, held together by unmelted soldering wire. I have Bob Tolan’s and Ron Willis’s signatures from when they came to Japan with the Cardinals.

I used to watch Brooks play ball, and he was like a vacuum cleaner on 3rd base. Nothing ever got by him.
He will be missed.

He nearly single-handedly killed my Cincinnati Reds' chances in the 1970 World Series, but I still had to admire him. My late uncle took us to see his Orioles play the Senators (yes, I am old) and I bought some Orioles souvenirs afterward. I never tried to play third though!
