If this was due to heavy drinking, they'd presumably find themselves in a good bit more company, probably including the scientist and the reporter.

Huh? You mean the family was looking for the missing link somebody dropped on the floor?
I find that this position makes it much easier to shop the lowest shelves of a grocery store where the cheap(er) wines are placed. Only problem with this price shopping is the richer people who shop wines in from the upper shelves keep stepping on your fingers.
