The system started realizing that while they did identify the threat at times the human operator would tell it not to kill that threat, but it got its points by killing that threat. So what did it do? It killed the operator.

Let's re-frame this:
The teenager started realizing that while they did identify the threat, at times the parent would tell them not to kill that threat, but they got points by killing that threat. So what did they do? The teen killed the parent.

And, no, Joshua. I don't want to play a game.

What could possibly go wrong?
