I remember "Friends" but never saw the spin-off "Experiment with Friends" but it does sound like something those twenty-something might do.

They should have tried a dental drill. That's what we used in the ER when presented with a similar situation. It worked pretty well. Our guy probably wouldn't have been in such pain if his girlfriend hadn't tried to get the ring off by rubbing the surrounding area with butter. I'll let you all work out what happened when she did that.
