This story doesn't seem contrived at all!
Hi, Dave!
During a brief conversation we had at the 2019 Herald Hunt, I told you that I was planning to design a geocaching tribute version of the hunt and told you I'd send you an invitation once it was ready. After all, you've gifted all of us with Tropic and Herald Hunts for years -- my wife and I even won a 7-day cruise in 1998 when we won that year's hunt -- but you've never have had the opportunity to be a participant instead of a creator!
While I postponed putting my version together for the last two years because it wouldn't have been wise to promote gatherings of people during the shared COVID journey we've all been on, my "Miami GeoHunt" is now set to publish on Saturday, May 14. I've done my best to channel my inner Dave in creating the hunt, and I'm feeling pretty confident that I'm paying a fun, challenging, well-done tribute to you, Tom, Gene, and all the good folks who have brought us Hunts all these years.
The multi-puzzle geocache will be publishing at 10 am on the morning of Saturday, May 14, and will be taking place in the Kendall area (SW 136 Street to SW 152 Street, near US1). While it will be available to solve on any day after it publishes (geocaches usually stay available for years), there will be a $100 prize for the first person who solves the entire "GeoHunt" and finds the actual geocache (I know, I know...it's not a cruise...but my pockets just don't run that deep).
You can check out the details for the GeoHunt on Facebook here. Though the puzzles won't be available until the 14th, you can also check out the instructions for the GeoHunt here.
If you have any questions, or even (dare I think it) if you want to let your Hunt fans know about it, please feel free to email me. Most of all, though, I really do hope you get to try it out on the 14th or whenever it works into your schedule. I feel like I'd be reciprocating the amazing gift of entertainment you've brought us for so many years, both in your columns and with the hunt.
Very best regards,
Jeff Rothkopf
