IT SEEMS TO US AS THOUGH SCIENTISTS MAKE THIS KIND OF 'DISCOVERY' EVERY THREE OR FOUR DAYS
Scientists uncover filthy truth: Your kitchen sponge holds more bacteria than a lab Petri dish!

Heck, American teenagers did that on summer vacation for decades (although apparently not any more).

Oops. Comment was intended for the bee story.

Cleanliness is a must to be considered sponge worthy.

This is why you should throw the spnoge away after you use it to wash the petri dish.

Guess the continent.

@EB I hope you're not using "spnoge worthy" as just an excuse to save the friendship, but did HE finish with a swirl?

I think it's time for Scientists to take a much needed vacation.

Okay, but it is really hard to get the counter tops clean with a petri dish.

Laura Petrie was a real dish... especially in the bathtub episode.

Unless things have changed, petri dishes came sterile and mostly used to host bacteria growth for lab tests. I used them by the case when I worked grading Uranium ore for Exxon. We powdered the ore to test in an X-Ray fluorescence unit.
We didn't use many sponges, however. We always thought sponges were for bathing and bacteria pretty much took care of itself. Scientists these days just don't have proper jobs.

My kitchen sponge likes to take a ride in the dishwasher, a couple times a week.
