Think of the poor baby-daddy fish who won't get a full day's sleep because for five years he'll be making noontime runs for pickles & ice cream.

This could explain why those fish are nearly extinct. Faced with being pregnant for 5 years, the female saying "not tonight, dear, I have a headache" would be too common to make it worth the poor males effort.

I think we're being very un-modern when we ASSUME the pregnant fish was female. I believe there are about 80 other genders it could have been.
