Defund them.

They're spending so much more than they get from taxation, they should should just shut down the whole process and get ready for the Sun to nova in 2046 full time.

You'd get better advice from Miss. Cleo anyway.

They've already been defunded to some extent and that's actually part of the problem, combined with the fact that they have to interpret and implement all the cockamamie tax law changes passed by Congress members who couldn't explain it or fill out a tax return themselves if their lives depended on it. I don't say there aren't problems with the IRS but likely not any worse than with any other government agency. (No, I don't work for them.)

With any luck, an overwhelmed IRS doesn’t have a lot of extra time or staffing for performing audits.

The other 49 died while on hold.

Death taxes are in another department, please hold the line while you're transferred.

So, manual processing should do the trick as far as getting your refund to you faster than you can say WTF...

Well we're reaching a point where spending has almost nothing to do with tax intake...let's just end it all.

@ wanderer2575 - I sent a registered letter from my little local post office in Tokyo to Texas in mid-March. Twenty-four hours later it was at LAX, but it hasn't budged since. As you suggested, it would appear that the IRS isn't the only agency that's understaffed.

P. S. And the "letter" was my tax form. I'm doubly doomed.

I mailed mine in seven weeks ago, and I keep checking the IRS website for "Where's my refund?" It always told me it had no info until yesterday, when the reply was "We've received your return." Hooray!
