Finch smuggling can be a lucrative enterprise, with birds netting hundreds of dollars.
Sounds like a flighty premise.

Red herring. They totally missed the flying squirrels he had in there.

We have a yard full of finches. They don't need to import any.

So THAT'S why they call a head of unruly hair a "bird nest"....

NMUA- You are probably right, but they landed in New York where everything is illegal. Should have flown into Newark airport!

Once the finches start to sing a lot of heads are gonna roll.

Not quite enough fragile finches for a real pie. That requires four and twenty blackbirds which are larger, tougher, but don't sing sweetly.
"Sing a song of sixpence a bucket full of rye
Four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie
When the pie was opened the birds began to sing
What a dandy dish fit for a king"
addendum: They had real tough blackbirds in those days, finches were just too feeble.
