This could have been a repeat of the famous O.Henry story, The Ransom of Red Chief, if the woman had demanded the thief pay her to take the kid back. Crime doesn't pay, but it can be costly.

So they arrested the thief, but didn't arrest the idiot mom? That would have been a great two-fer on the arresting officer's service record.
