Earthworms absorb oxygen from the soil and expel carbon dioxide through their skin. When the oxygen in the earth is replaced by water, they have no choice but to surface.

Certainly it's bad omen for whoever isn't leading the race, since the leaders spikes will throw the worms up into their faces.

MOTW, It always seemed to rain heavily during spring finals at my college with the result the sidewalks were crawling with half-drowned earthworms. Entertainment was watching barefoot coeds try to avoid stepping on earthworms shrieking all the way.
