The octopus had incentive to make the great escape. He was pining to see octopussy again and visit his itenticle twin brother, Legs.

Octopi are among the smartest of animals, very impressive for a critter than doesn't have a brain (they have multiple ganglia that, collectively, sort of but not really function as a brain). Given that they're invertebrates that have no rigidity to them, they can get in and out of anywhere.
This escape wasn't so much amazing as it was inevitable.
