In Douglas Adam's Hitchhiker series, they had a Babel Fish. These tiny fish were implanted in an ear and instantly the implanted person could understand and speak all known Intergalactic languages.
There are those who claim ancient humans were given Babel Fish by visiting benevolent aliens. The humans recorded on a cave wall that they tasted like anchovies.
