PLUG FOR A PAL

If you're looking for a gift for somebody who loves sports and/or loves to read, consider The Big Fella, by this blog's old friend Jane Leavy, who's a fine reporter and a wonderful writer. It's highly recommended by this blog, even though it's about a New York Yankee.

I'm reading it now and would recommend it to any baseball fan. Once you get past the first 50 or so pages that are devoted the Ruth's childhood, it is interesting reading.

In a detailed study, one baseball fanatic concluded that Yankee Mickey Mantle had the best season ever (partly due to his amazing defense), and Ruth had the best career ever. I recall a man back in the day saying he hated all the Yankees except Mickey Mantle. Mantle was from my home state of Oklahoma, so I felt the same way. Mantle also hit the first home run in the Astrodome in 1965, here in Houston.

My husband, who has worked in professional baseball for years, loved this book.

I can't wait to read it - I loved Leavy's "The Last Boy" about Mickey Mantle, and I'm not even a sports fan.
