We saw her live at Radio City Music Hall some years ago. She was still pretty great.
RIP
Think.

I always referred to Aretha as "my woman". I would turn up the volume as loud as possible whenever she came on the radio. She has been a pillar of inspiration to me and her songs gave me courage to carry on during particularly rough times in my life.
After her electric performance for Carole King at the Kennedy Center, I enthusiastically shared it with everyone at work. She had Barack Obama singing along with 'You Make Me Feel (like a Natural Woman)' right up until he realized that a) the camera was on him and b) he was about to sing 'Natural Woman' on camera. Priceless.
Rest In Peace, Aretha.

Saying a little prayer for her right now...RIP, Lady Soul.

Beautiful lady,
Fantastic voice,
Unfathomable loss.

She was the best and I'm going to miss her. When I was a little girl my mom would put a stack of 45 records on the stereo and we'd dance around to Aretha, The Supremes, Stevie Wonder, Lee Dorsey, Smokey Robinson, and many others while she did her housework. My favorite though was always Aretha. When she sang about respect you knew she meant it. RIP to a wonderful singer and person.

Sad news. Aretha was a national treasure.

Slowly, the best of the '60's fades away.

Chain, chain, chain
(Chain, chain, chain)
Chain, chain, chain
(Chain, chain, chain)
Chain, chain, chain
(Chain, chain, chain)
(Chain of fools)
Here is the really hard part.
(Ooo, ooo, ooo, ooo)

*blinks back a tear*
Now where is that CD set stashed away in the living room?

MOTW - I watch that video about once a week. Watched it just before I came to the blog today. Carole wrote it, but you can tell by her reaction that ARETHA had her blessing to OWN it.
From the Blues Brothers, to Blue Lou:
"Well...Go ahead, dammit!"

What MOTW said...

I grew up with this music, and remember that for every singer/band, there was somebody who did not like them. Dylan (bad voice), The Beatles (Get a haircut!), The Who (smashing perfectly good guitars), The Stones (too rough), Hendrix (WTF was that?), Janis (See Hendrix) ... but I don't recall anybody not liking Aretha's music.

On the marquee of the Fox Theatre in downtown Detroit.

Beyonce is not the Queen of Soul. Aretha is eternally!
Beyonce is Queen of Nothing. (But she can use that if she wants to!)
RIP and many many many many thanks, Aretha!
