The squirrels put him up to it.

I don't think that expression signifies "guilt" so much as "extreme abdominal distress."

One of the best lines in journalism:
Lo and behold, Kai produced the snaffled teeth.

The expression on Kai's face is likely more one of relief the vet didn't probe deeper. They've got to start missing the cat pretty soon.

If it had been an American pet, he (Kai) would have blamed the cat.

"Blame the cat, do you?" said the vet as he snapped on Latex gloves and thoughtfully applied a little canine jelly. "We'll just see about that."
