I saw opposite when I was a kid, a kitten sitting on top of a utility pole crying for a couple of hours. Power company guy arrives and headed up pole. Second he touched kitten it shot straight down the pole like a squirrel.

One of our cats periodically ran up a tall tree and sat up there mewing pathetically. As long as we made sympathetic noises below, it stayed there. When we got fed up and went inside, it was down in minutes.

I think the cat realized that if it stayed in the pit it was going to be one the menu.
