From many years of mineral exploration, I have had lots of encounters with rattlesnakes, even stepped on a couple. Very few will rattle, most will give a loud hiss ( especially when you are standing on one) or simply ignore you. When teased is when they coil and rattle.

In CO, snakes in the "grass" are mellow snakes. They don't get rattled.
