I used to do this about 35 years ago in the Society for Creative Anachronism. At one time I could throw a battle-axe and call whether I wanted the blade, the top point, or the back point to stick in the target!

Clankie -- it the rule is "Flee a knife, charge a gun" I'm not sure where a thrown ax fits in.
