I had a bear once go through my backyard when I lived up north. Scared the dogs to death.

True story: During our visit to Alaska a couple of years ago, my wife and I took a hike to the headwall of a glacier.
At the start of hiking trail here was an official sign by the Alaska Parks Dept describing what to do in the event of a bear attack.
The sign advised curling up in a ball and playing dead if attacked by a Grizzly. That sounded like good advice until we read the next sentence.
It said "However, if the bear then starts to eat you, you should fight back".

They should also tell you to never go into the woods alone. Then if you're attacked by a bear you only have to outrun the other person.
