When I was working in Oman we would fly with the RAF in what were affectionately called 'Sky Vans' to visit the Paed. dept in a rural hospital up on the Musandam Peninsula (it's the lump of rock that sticks out at the entrance to the Persian Gulf) which was only accessible by sea or air, and we weren't getting on no dhow. The Brit/U.S. air traffic controllers would pull these stunts as a matter of course. Bearing in mind this was during the Iran/Iraq war, it wasn't really all that funny.
