"her unnamed partner"
No wonder she was beating him. "You don't even have a name?! Why am I your girlfriend?! Take that!"

When I was in high school, I had a girlfriend who would "slap me sideways" every couple of months. This was usually in response to some idle comment I made that struck (ha) her wrong.
"Slap me sideways" was a common descriptor for being hit so hard your eyes crossed.
It has just struck me, 44 years later, how strange it was that we had such a phrase in common use.
BTW, I haven't seen her in 44 years.

In a related headline, "Trayvon Hughes and George Zimmerman costumes backfire." So, which way were they SUPPOSED to fire?

Is this the Webster definition of "Irony" ?

No, sadly it's the Webster definition of " Michigan. Sigh."
