I've just returned from a trip for coffee and a stop at the Farmer's Market, requiring a drive through our beautiful metropolis with its crumbling
studentsstreets, and this is still the dumbest thing I've seen all day.Posted by: Omniskeptic | July 31, 2013 at 11:48 AM

We had an Eng. Lang. teacher at our school (Mr."Slug" Leach) who'd whack across the back of the head with a ruler any 'tongue-out-when-you're-concentrating-on something' poor unfortunates he spotted while prowling the classroom during essay-writing time. How in the name of all that's holy did it end up being my fave subject?

Jan - were you read to as a child? I have a theory that kids whose parents read to them and -- here's the key part -- made it almost a reward, certainly a pleasant thing, anyway -- not only learn to read on their own more quickly, but also like it more. And a subset of those people discover that writing is almost as much fun. Anyway, that's my theory. It is mine and I own it and what it is, too.
Oh, and if what you were being read happened to be drawn from the classics of humor (Pogo, Mark Twain, Thurber, et al), I believe there's a strong correlation with a penchant for commenting on humor blogs in later life.
