And how did you spend your morning, NotSherly?
Dissecting the pellet of the Barred owl.
I think this is very cool, but what do I do with all the mouse parts now?

I'll stick with the real owl pellets, thank you. None of this fancy schmancy new-fangled electronic simulated owl pellets for me.

Given today's budget cuts, I'm not surprised that virtual replaced the great expense of supplying owl pellets to a classroom of kids.
The sixth grade science fair this year was bringing in four speakers to talk to the kids about science careers. I was one of the speakers -- information science. One of the speakers was a weather studies student the local community college. The change was because supporting a traditional Science Fair was cut from the budget.

I've got screech owls living in my neighborhood.

I'm with you, Horace. These will NEVER replace real natural owl pellets. The fakes will never have the right balance or texture. And their bouquet is insouciant at best.

Where can I get real bones that announce their names and snap into place?

For those who don't have time to find their own fresh owl pellets, they give information for ordering on-line We highly reccommend using Owl Brand Discovery Kits (www.obdk.com) as your source for buying owl pellets. They have excellent service and a quality product.

I am the creator of the Virtual Owl Pellet Dissection at www.kidwings.com. I am glad you found my site and that some of you see the benefit of this simulation.
Contrary to what Mr. Meyerson may feel, my goal is to Inspire the Next Generation of youngsters into exploring the natural world around them. For 15 years I led a bird club at the elementary school where I teach. This virtual dissection came about because of this club. There are more bird related activities/info on the main website.
Kidwings.com gets over 1500 visits per day and is used by teachers all over the world. Unfortunately, budget cuts do force some schools to use this free alternative, but other teachers use it as a pre-teaching activity to give their students some ideas of what to expect when they dissect a real owl pellet. If you didn't take the time to try it, or if you have never dissected a really owl pellet, I encourage you to give it a try and to share it with any educators/parents you know.
Thanks for letting me explain my site and its purpose a little more.
