A BELATED THANK-YOU
I never got near my computer yesterday, so I didn't get to post anything about Veteran's Day. I apologize for that, and hope it's not to late to say this: If you're a veteran, thank you for your service. If you have a veteran in your family, I thank you, too.

It's never too late Dave. And thanks.

It's never too late, and especially it's not too late today since this is the official federal holiday.
Thanks to all who served. You cannot believe how much I appreciate it.

Thank you to all veterans. My step-cousin is on his second tour in Iraq. I am glad he's in people's thoughts.

A very special smooch to blurkie.

My deepest thanks to all the Veterans and those who have served in our nation's armed forces.
BTW, you all look hot in uniform. Love those, uh, guns. ;-)

Walter Reed won't deliver anonymous cards for fear they contain something nasty.
Posted by: Edgar Greenberg | November 12, 2007 at 11:19 AM
A very special *SMACK* to blurkie ;-P
A very special hug to Wyo and all the blog dudes and blog gals who are vets!
I'd hug my bro-in-law who served during Vietnam, but he's living the good life this week, golfing in Santo Domingo.

Rats. Thanks EG, - I just checked here and you're right. Makes sense, but very sad sense.

FYI, y'all. I know it is a good thought, and it would be appreciated if it were true, but the Holiday Cards for A Recovering American Soldier is really not true. Any correspondence sent to a generic person will not be delivered, especially in this day and age of terrorism. I know that the thought is appreciated, but the action will not result in a card getting to a soldier.
As a veteran, I appreciate the sentiment and I thank all those who are still fighting for freedom.

Med, I have a friend who's a marine and served in both Afghanistan and Iraq. In between deployments he came to church in his dress blues. We had to wet-vac the girl drool out of the carpets!
God bless all you vetrans.

Thanks for what you've done and continue to do. God Bless and Protect David Garza of the Big Red One and all of your brothers and sisters at arms. Hooah!

Posted by: Siouxie | November 12, 2007 at 11:32 AM
Hey, we'll take whatever we can get!
Posted by: jon | November 12, 2007 at 11:34 AM
Siouxie. You already did. It's my turn.
*smacks jon for Siouxie*
And because it's Veterans' Day, I'm not gonna correct your spelling of Siouxie's name. Free typo on da house.
Posted by: Annie Where-but-here | November 12, 2007 at 11:35 AM
A "purist" would point out that Veteran's Day is technically on the 11th day of the 11th month, so SMACK away Siouxie. Don't forget the follow-through!

*smacks jon* What? Everyone else was doing it!

Thanks to all the Vets who served.
My grandmother and grandfather met in San Diego at the Naval Hospital. She was a WAVE and he was a Marine and one of her patients after WWII. He served in Korea, too.
My uncle served in the Air Force during Vietnam.
And all three of my brothers are/were Marines. My oldest brother was in the reserves and finished out his service with the Air Force as a Weapons Instructor. My youngest brother is in his MOS school with the Marines and goes to Iraq in December.
My middle brother graduates from Marine Boot Camp on November 30th at Camp Pendleton.
And while I worry for them every day, they make me very proud.

Fivver, my Dad gave me away at my wedding in his dress blues. Upstaged the groom. Twice the age, and such a handsome man, not to mention, utterly brilliant and honorable to boot.
Now that I put it that way, my Dad has always upstaged my former spouse. Hmmmmm.........

Canada also has a Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. It is in front of the National War Memorial in downtown Ottawa. It has beome a tradition to place your poppy on the tomb at the end of the Remembrance Day ceremonies each year. The original headstone of the soldier, that was taken from the cemetary in France, is in the National War Museum. It is placed so that the sun will shine on it at exactly at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. For details, follow the link.

Many thanks to those who have served, and for those who are currently in harm's way this prayer:
May you have comfortable boots, a light pack, decent food, a safe place to sleep, and good guys watching your back.

Hey Blurk,
I just saw your picture on Wyo's site. Did you ever spend any time with the Ground Launch Cruise Missile system? (Belgium or England)
Posted by: Flash | November 12, 2007 at 02:24 PM
When I served in Belgium at SHAPE (Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe) there were two World War I monuments about 800 meters apart in front of the base. The first was where the German troops first made contact with the Allied Expeditionary force in 1914. The other monument was the location of the British lines at the moment the ceasefire took effect on 11 November 1918. Four years, millions of lives for 800 meters difference. Kind of makes you think about the usefulness of war for settling political differences.
To put it in context, I was a professional soldier for 23 years. Soldiers usually are the last ones to want war, because only they know the true price.

Flash, I know, I know...LTTG. But, never worked GLCM. I was stationed in Turkey, Colorado and now Montana. Too many TDY's to mention but suffice to say I've pulled my time in the sand.

My husband is currently starting his fourth deployment; this one is to Afghanistan, after already having done Saudi once and Iraq twice. (Direct quote:"Eh, at least I get a new country this time.")
This seemed an appropriate place to say that I have two teenagers and they may very well be alive today because my last deployment strategy was to hoard a big ole' stash of chocolate and a bunch of Dave Barry's books of his collected columns. Whenever it was a particularly bad day, offspring-wise, I would sit down for a minute, scarf some chocolate, and flip to any random page in any of the books because I knew that whatever page I landed on would make me laugh and take the edge of any homicidal tendencies long enough to slog through another day. So, on behalf of my husband, myself and my kids, thank YOU, Dave. (and an honorary HOOAH!)
