FIRST - to congatulate you and your fellow Floridians.

THANK YOU DAVE!! This was the day that needed a *snork* (or five) more than any other day, and you came through!!
Posted by: CoastRaven | June 22, 2006 at 01:22 PM
Ahhhhhh. I love a good helping of fresh Barry. Writing. Not - well, nevermind. I just enjoyed reading another Dave article.
Posted by: Brainy Jello | June 22, 2006 at 01:24 PM
And now that they have paid for their Championship, South Floridians can go back to "whacking the cosita".
Posted by: Michael H. | June 22, 2006 at 01:26 PM
Thank you Dave for understanding us!
Just show me that bandwagon and I'm ready to JUMP, take out my "casuelas" and clank away with the rest of 'em!
LET'S PARTAY! Miami Style!

"This is more the hasty squirting backseat passion of Prom Night."
Okay - that is just nasty.
And no matter how right you are, you'll still be getting hate mail.
But we love you!

YAY! for Dave writing an article!!
Posted by: Sarah J | June 22, 2006 at 01:31 PM
Dave - please do a version of this for our pathetically enslaved England fans. They should grow up and stop worshipping a bunch of overpaid teenagers who happen to be able to kick a ball about but have no discernable higher cognitive functions.
And the US didn't make it...YES!!!! INGERLAND INGERLAND INGERLAND...Land of Hope and Glory...And did those feeeet.....
Oh. Sorry.
Posted by: Dr Acula | June 22, 2006 at 01:32 PM
Hey Judi - you got mentioned!
Posted by: Eli | June 22, 2006 at 01:32 PM
YAY, Dave!
My kids went to a Marlins game the year after they won the series. They called me from their field box seats. I asked how they wer eable to buy such good seats the day of the game. They said it was easy as they were among the 50 people attending the game.
Posted by: slyeyes | June 22, 2006 at 01:39 PM
Dave, thank you for a rare example of Honest Reporting. I especially liked your tribute to the Stealth Bloggerette:
During the years when the Marlins are not winning the World Series, I believe the only person who actually attends the games is my assistant, Judi Smith, a very loyal fan. I don't think that even the Marlins players attend all the games. I think sometimes it's just the opposing team, and Judi.

Our savior Dwyane did say, "The Heat will inherit the mirth." And lo, it was so. Ho, ho, ho.
Posted by: Annie Where-but-here | June 22, 2006 at 01:53 PM
Two new Dave columns in one month life is good. It makes me wish that the Marlins go to the series again so we get more columns.
Now I have a question...
Why does a city that has an average winter temp. of 86 have a hockey team?
Posted by: Addicted to 24 | June 22, 2006 at 01:58 PM
Squirting Backseat Passion WBAGNFA porn flick.
Posted by: LadyBug | June 22, 2006 at 02:03 PM
By the way...
How much does Judi rock. I would give anything for a girlfriend who loved baseball. My last one was giving me dirty looks for draging her to a game. Needless to say I am now single again.
Posted by: Addicted to 24 | June 22, 2006 at 02:08 PM
I disagree with your assessment of other cities' sports fans, Dave, but then again, I'm a Cubs fan.
Posted by: Eaglie | June 22, 2006 at 02:09 PM
Eaglie; You have my condolences.
Posted by: Dave | June 22, 2006 at 02:12 PM
Hey, I'm a Buffalo fan. Do I get any condolences?
Make with the condolences, Dave!
Posted by: Higgy | June 22, 2006 at 02:21 PM
Eaglie,
My late uncle was a life long Cubs fan. He took great pride in taking his grandson to wrigley for games. When he passed away my cousin told his son that grandpa has passed on. The son said does this mean no more baseball games? My cousin said no your grandfather wanted badeball to be a part of your life and we will always go to games. The boy then asked "Can we pick another team as the cubs arent all that good." At 8 the boy had figured it out unfortunetly though he is now a Giants fan.
Posted by: Addicted to 24 | June 22, 2006 at 02:22 PM
Higgy - Dave is fresh out of condolences, but went back to the store to buy more just for you. It may take a while, especially if there's a sale on cat food.
Posted by: Annie Where-but-here | June 22, 2006 at 02:22 PM
My first ever Major leage game was to watch the Marlins on opening day. It was a glorious day and I was one row from the highest seats in Joe Robbie (or whatever name the stadium has now). Oh how I love the game of baseball. I will now and forever cheer for the Miami Hurricanes, but alas they were knocked out of the CWS by Oregon this week. Still Go 'Canes.
Now I just have to hold out for a Dodgers game.
Posted by: Mad Scientist | June 22, 2006 at 02:22 PM
You should see the message boards about the Carolina Hurricanes winning the Stanley Cup(thats the hockey championship trophy). I love the hostility. Canada's not too bad, but the Buffalo, Hartford, Philly and some other cities are a tad upset. We didn't Earn The Trophy By Spending Decades Of our Lives In The Crappy Winters Out On A Frozen Lake And Having Heart Attacks Screaming About The Owner And The Coach And The Idiot Redneck Southerners Who Don't Understand The Game. Instead, when basketball season was over (Ours ends in March with the inevitable Duke choke) we realized we had a hockey team that could be used as another reason to BBQ in a parking lot getting drunk (not that we need a reason, it just looks better to have one).
So hears to you Mr. Bandwagon Sports Fan
You have figured out how to live the good life with a sports team that never loses.
Show up on a rainy day to support a baseball team with 53 straight losses?
You realize winning is fun, losing is not, and paying to suffer would qualify you for the loony bin if it wasn't full of Cubs fans.
So go pour yourself a slightly-below-room-temperature-Guinness Draught because with the ticket money you saved avoiding losers, you don't have to drink nasty imitation beer!!
Posted by: Matt | June 22, 2006 at 02:23 PM
Matt -- Exactly!
Posted by: Dave | June 22, 2006 at 02:29 PM
Matt - I think the Nor'easters were concerned about what would happen to Stanley's Cup with all that Southern humidity. When the Florida Frozen Margarita-whatevers won it a few years ago, it got jock itch or something.
Posted by: Annie Where-but-here | June 22, 2006 at 02:29 PM
Amen to that Matt!
Posted by: Susy | June 22, 2006 at 02:32 PM
Matt you sir are a genius
Posted by: Addicted to 24 | June 22, 2006 at 02:34 PM
the hasty squirting backseat passion of Prom Night...
It's not the squirting, or the backseat that's the problem here....it's the "hasty". Yup, indeedy.
What....? Oh. Were you talking about sports or sumpin'?
Posted by: sharon share-alike | June 22, 2006 at 02:37 PM
Nah, sharon, you pretty much "nailed" it.
Posted by: blurkernomore | June 22, 2006 at 02:41 PM
"This is more the hasty squirting backseat passion of Prom Night." This might be Dave's best quote in years!
And how, exactly is "whacking the cosita," related to the above?
Posted by: Cheesewiz | June 22, 2006 at 02:52 PM
Thanks, blurker-nm--I figured that was the general "thrust" of the conversation.
Posted by: sharon share-alike | June 22, 2006 at 02:54 PM
Hit it right on the head.
Posted by: blurkernomore | June 22, 2006 at 02:59 PM
Yup, blurk (may I call you 'blurk'?) - you sure whacked that mole.
Posted by: Annie Where-but-here | June 22, 2006 at 03:16 PM
Annie, of course you may call me blurk. I mean, we've been in the backseat together and all.
Posted by: blurkernomore | June 22, 2006 at 03:18 PM
Agh! And my prom dress is dry-clean!
Posted by: Annie Where-but-here | June 22, 2006 at 03:20 PM
Annie, if that dress is navy blue, you just might want to keep it "uncleaned." You just never know.
Posted by: Suzy Q | June 22, 2006 at 03:21 PM
Dave - if you havent already passed your deadline, could you add Matts (priceless) rant as a tag to the article... KUDOS MATT!!
Posted by: CoastRaven | June 22, 2006 at 03:25 PM
Although I have lived in PA all my life I happened to have been in FL and at the very first Marlins game (spring training). I've had a soft spot for them ever since.
Posted by: Layzeeboy | June 22, 2006 at 03:26 PM
I just re-read Dave's pre-Championship series column and I have to say he was right on the money.
Miami had more female fans sporting artifically-inflated and artfully lifted bazooms and the HEAT won!
Big boobs win championships! Remember that! Big BOOBS win. Little boobs, or god forbid No boobs, lose.
Posted by: Ed Sharp | June 22, 2006 at 03:33 PM
I'd like some pity. I root for the Orioles & the Ravens.....thankfully we don't have a hockey team. Also, grew up in DC with the Redskins, Senator (yes, I'm very old) and Whizards (nee Bullets).
All I have to say is Go Terps & Fear the Turtle!
Posted by: Kat | June 22, 2006 at 03:46 PM
I sadly have to report that I agree so with Dave's comments. I have often wondered, as an Oregonian, how a bunch of tall athletically gifted guys (known as the Trailblazers) represent me.
They have done some things in the past few years that have lost them a huge contingent of fans--like one of them stopped for a DUI who gave the police a sports card with his picture on it to explain why he had no drivers' license. Even lost the kids on that one. It is so bad they are for sale, and nobody wants to buy them. Maybe if Miami can have a hockey team, we should trade them in for one of those.
I guess what I'm saying is it takes more than winning to hold your fans, but of course it can't hurt.
Posted by: Hanna | June 22, 2006 at 03:58 PM
Hey Dave!
Great one! I loved it!
My 19 month old likes basketball too... Of course, her favorite player is still the ball. But, the ball is great, so that's ok.
Posted by: Writer's Cramp | June 22, 2006 at 04:31 PM
Hey Dave, how come you didn't cover the Stanley Cup Finals?
Posted by: Bryan | June 22, 2006 at 04:34 PM

BTW- The Middle Tennessee Seminole Club is quite large. Go Noles!

Mad Scientist,
I feel your pain. My Clemson Tigers were also eliminated this week. However, in the spirit of the thread...
GO TARHEELS!!!!
Posted by: Matt | June 22, 2006 at 04:57 PM
Judi you got it let me check airline prices for Seattle to Miami.
Ok $424 hmmmmmmm maybe next time but if you are ever in this neck of the woods I will take you to see the Mariners and if we are lucky they might even win 8^)
Posted by: Addicted to 24 | June 22, 2006 at 04:58 PM
;)
Posted by: judi | June 22, 2006 at 04:59 PM
Dave,
You rock. As you so succinctly put it, IT IS A GAME. And Ad to 24, I also am Ad to 24 and if you should ever wish to trail down to LA for a Mariners-Angels game, let me know. (Sorry, Judi.)
Posted by: Dr Alice | June 22, 2006 at 05:50 PM
Kat- nothing wrong with cheering for the Orioles. They will always be number one in my heart. Wish I could see them play more often. They don't really televise their games out here unless they are playing the Angels. So I get to see them maybe twice a year *sniff*.
Matt- next year we go to Omaha to cheer our teams on so they don't lose. I miss spending evenings in Mark Light Stadium. *sniff*
Posted by: Mad Scientist | June 22, 2006 at 06:04 PM
Dr. Alice the next time I am in your area you got it 8^)
Actually I was thinking about taking a week off this summer and driving my new car down to so cal for a few days.
Posted by: Addicted to 24 | June 22, 2006 at 06:22 PM
I am 100% behind fan disinterest in losing teams. If you keep showing up and paying the ticket prices no matter how badly the team sucks, the owners have no incentive to build a competitive team. And I should know. I live in Toronto. Everytime I see one of those 'go Leafs go' idiots, I want to hit 'em in the head with a sockful o' nickels.
Posted by: rhealist | June 22, 2006 at 06:34 PM
rhealist - me, too, but for different reasons. I just enjoy hitting people in the head with a sock full 'o nickels.
Posted by: Annie Where-but-here | June 22, 2006 at 06:48 PM
Annie, just stop! *snork*
Brief fan aside. The Jaguars used to play in one of the largest NFL stadiums [built for the Gator Bowl and the Florida-Georgia crowds]. Sold out occasionally, especially big games, but lots of blackouts/ spotty crowds. Two-years ago they 'covered' 9,000 seats in the upper decks. Still no sell out. Last year they went 12 and 4 and they have a great looking team. Yesterday, they announced the first sell out and a waiting list for the season upcoming.
Oops, I said brief.
Posted by: CJrun | June 22, 2006 at 07:07 PM
hmmm, this seems as good a place as any to post that i updated the web site (davebarry.com for anyone not paying attention) with a new longish column, circa 1982, on the miscellaneous columns page (go to "stuff" first) and a very new item on the NEWS page (go there from the front page). it would really make me happy if anyone would go there without my having to post about it ;) but i promise not to whine about it too much.
Posted by: judi | June 22, 2006 at 07:32 PM
Yay! I went there. Thanks, judi! That's cool. I will preorder it. Arquont, huh? Is that photo on the cover anyone special from long ago? He looks just like my son.

CAUTION: If you type in davebarry.com, be careful of your spelling or you'll wind up looking at what appears to be a guy whistling through his bellybutton!

VERY classic and funny column!!! Alas...Miami hasn't changed much...we still have those nasty palmetto bugs, alligators and mosquitoes. Although the Metrorail WAS miraculously finished.
Great one Dave!

{{{judi}}} and {{{El}}}
I get so busy I don't get to get here very often...and *hangs head* I don't get to the davebarry page very often either. And I know I should.
And if I hadn't I might not have known about an upcoming visit to NC...and me here thinking Dave was avoiding the Carolinas.

Yay! A new Dave Barry column to read!
I almost missed it. I read "this is for you", and I didn't think "Dave Barry column".
