Someplace in the US of A. Unfortunately that looks like a "gentrified" BBQ joint. It's probably even clean! What a disgrace!

Grey? Is that shirt grey?
*faints*
p.s. ~ Dave, can you bring me back a doggie bag please? I'm seriously in the mood for some bbq.
Posted by: neener | July 25, 2005 at 05:28 AM
minne-sota? for bbq? that's like ordering a kosher meal in Iowa.

I know he's not in New York. I'm guessing Arkansas. Or West Vagina.

Jeff, too flat for WV, isn't it?

Not only does it look clean, pogo, it is publicly traded on the NASDAQ under symbol "DAVE." I'm not saying anyone should buy or sell it, so I'll spare you all the Wall Street SEC disclaimers that the Famous Dave's homespun, y'all-filled web site has in the small print.
Everyone knows the best barbecue rarely even has a building, but is sold out of the back of a trailer that might not be street legal, let alone pass health codes.

They have Jews in Iowa - how did that happen? What? They were on their way to su.so.ca. and when they went through Iowa they thought What this place needs is a good Jewish deli, so they decided to stay???????
*likes the blog's educational value*

Since Duluth was such a let down as a vacation destination, I have returned to this post to continue to speculate on more exciting places.
Dave's in Pottysville? How about Nunavut? No? Well, it is somewhere in a cow intensive region so how about anywhere in Texas? Visiting the President at the ranch again?

Princess - a Jewish family bought an old meat packing plant and refurbished it to produce kosher meat. Actually, a genius idea, given the number of beef cattle (and other non-pork producing animals) in that area of the state. What's really unique about Postville is the numbers of other immigrants that settled around that area. When you walk down the main street you'll hear three or four different languages being spoken at once. Quite an unusual place, Postville, especially for a bland state like Iowa.

Beware of drunken college students... and my son's friend Justin....
EB. Been there. Done that....

First, he does England and Ireland... and now, DULUTH?? I mean, even the name gives you a clue of "Not much going on here, except rocks and waves... (grrrrr) and hot college babes in mini bikinis!!"
Dave, you get over here to ND and get your monthly Shot! Or, you could drop in on Dr. Miller at the Duluth Mental Heal..... ooopsss....
Posted by: EB | July 25, 2005 at 07:08 AM
Actually Dave (*smiles*) we like you better off meds...... no one could write like you on them...

OMGWTFBBQ???
Inquiring minds want to know-
London, Dublin, Duluth, MN???
Posted by: Targetgirl | July 25, 2005 at 07:25 AM
thanks for the birthday greets... and, no, not a trauma year. and the reason i wrote 'Iowa" is because i'm originally from queens, and even tho i live upstate now, my narrow view is that there couldnt be a kosher anything out there in the land of the free; because here in upstate ny i cant get a kosher anything, and i have to go to Ben's Deli in queens [where my mama & co live] in order to get a decent knish! and nobody here knows from a good sour pickle, or brisket. atleast bagels have come into their own. but kosher? fawgeddabouddit.
Posted by: queensbee | July 25, 2005 at 07:46 AM
queensbee - as an Iowan, I say...don't worry about it. I've lived here all my life, and Iowa is a nice, quiet, serene state that's about as exciting as drying concrete. That's why, when Iowans have a chance to make noise about something unique and cool in their state, they make the most of the opportunity. Those opportunities don't often come along! =)
P.S. Iowa State Motto: The Booger State - Everyone Picks On Us

A.N. - Thanks for the 411 - very interesting, but I'm still not going to visit *snork* - however I'm looking forward to the first opportunity to drop the "kosher packing plant" story into a conversation! :)

Minnetonka, MN
Posted by: Jim | July 25, 2005 at 08:24 AM
Aunt Nancy, I like your motto for the state of Iowa. When I lived there they actually picked "Iowa: a state of minds" which is an equally bizarre motto. The Des Moines Register had a contest for people to submitt mottos. My personal favorite was "Iowa, gateway to Nebraska." That pretty much sums up Iowa. No, I really liked living Iowa City. If I'd had to live elsewhere though that would be another story (thinking of Fort Dodge or Chariton.)
Posted by: spudette | July 25, 2005 at 08:31 AM
spudette: I live near Cedar Rapids, which is OK. But its nice to know someone else shares my opinion of Fort Dodge. :-P The best place to live in Iowa now (IMHO) is the Quad Cities. They get the best concerts, they have Arena League football, they're cleaning up the downtowns (kinda) and there's always the Bix Fest.
Mmmmmmm....jazz, beer, bratwurst and corn on the cob
Posted by: Aunt Nancy | July 25, 2005 at 09:02 AM
aunt nancy, i love that motto. maybe some good kosher food would spice the place up! and dont worry, we'll send you some Tums!
and so i dont blunder, and pick on you again ... do ya have chinese food?
Posted by: queensbee | July 25, 2005 at 09:39 AM
That looks mysteriously like a repainted Pure Oil sign.

I'm impressed with the number of Iowa connections that I've seen on Dave's blog... must be our keen emphasis on education. Case in point -- Ted Habte-Gabr-Newton-John, whose attractive mullet leads you directly to the U of I website. I'm in the 'burbs of Des Moines... and, very likely, related to some of you other Iowanians (Aunt Nancy, we don't have an Uncle Grandpa Bob in common or something, do we???)
Posted by: Jillywilly | July 25, 2005 at 10:10 AM
Jillywilly - that depends. Do you mean my Dad (Bob Sr.) or my brother (Bob Jr.) or my uncle Bob (mom's brother)?
queensbee - yes, we have "Chinese" food out here, of a chain-franchise fashion. Actually, some of the best carryout Chinese in Cedar Rapids comes from a supermarket on the northeast side. Go figure.
Posted by: Aunt Nancy | July 25, 2005 at 10:25 AM
I've been to the Famous Dave's in Atlanta, GA. . . Dunno if that's the place, though.
Posted by: Manda | July 25, 2005 at 10:31 AM
Aunt Nancy -- is it Hy-Vee???? (I grew up in CR, on the northeast side, in fact). Kind of homesick for the place, five smells and all.
And Uncle Grandpa Bob would be Aunt Muriel's common law husband, who was married to grandma (before she went thru the change and ran off with the Fuller Brush man). He says to tell you 'hey' and tips his seed corn cap to ya.

You are in Nirvana as can be seen by the fact you appear to be hovering three feet above the ground in a meditative 'downward shitting dog' yoga pose.
Posted by: tyler | July 25, 2005 at 10:56 AM
Jillywilly - YES! On Oakland Road - you know, the one where they bulldozed the old store and the Kieck's store to put in a super-supermarket.
Posted by: Aunt Nancy | July 25, 2005 at 11:08 AM
Kosher is not so foriegn for Iowa .... Des Moines is an insurance town, lots of financial stuff going on, and a fairly nice Jewish community, all 3 types of temples there....I remember babysitting for a Prof., who kept Kosher, I wasn't sure how to use the dishes, they had several sets, milk, meat,etc.....and all the Jewish kids going to Drake Univ. from Chicago area...(*memories*)
Posted by: EB | July 25, 2005 at 11:21 AM
I'll pick Iowa, since I suspect Dave wants to visit with Ted Havye-Gravity to see if he's gotten a new hairstyle while Dave and Ridley were away.
And Aunt Nancy, in my (red)neck of the woods we have a combination Soul Food and Chinese restaurant called Uncle Tom's Dragon.
