I'm having deferred success understanding the point here.
Posted by: sandy beach | July 20, 2005 at 01:53 PM
And who’s our little semanticist?
The flipside of this coin, given that life is terminal, is that one could also refer to success as deferred failure.

I'm sorry, I'm afraid my comment will have to be deferred funny...
Posted by: jamester | July 20, 2005 at 02:01 PM
Boggles the mind. A few thoughts in lieu of finishing the e-mail on which I was working:
(1) Happy Slapping WBAGNFA(Prince Album)
(2) Just so I'm not deferring success in understanding their agenda, they were, puzzlingly, condemning the TERM "happy slapping" rather than the action?
(3) If this passes, I'll need to contact the registrar at my university and request that my grade in chemistry be amended to read "SDI" ("Success Deferred Indefinitely"). Using the ol' "fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me" school of thought, I switched majors and satisfied my science requirement with Rocks for Jocks 101.

Moe: I think they'll give you a deferred deferral on that.
Posted by: reneviht | July 20, 2005 at 02:11 PM
Aha! Finally the loophole I've been waiting for! I'm not a writing failure - my success has just been (extendedly) deferred!! Whoo hoo! Mom will be so proud.
And I also despise my local toddler T-ball teams who make sure every game ends in a tie and we all get ice cream.... I want to hear disappointed sniveling, just like in the good old days...how will they learn?
Posted by: Punkin Poo | July 20, 2005 at 02:13 PM
ew.
they do this in california. it's so sad really.
a good friends son is just a few points above qualifying for the extra help he badly needs.can hardly read or write. even flunked (got kicked out of?) summer school this year, and they are still going to float this kid into the 8th grade. outrageous.
Posted by: js | July 20, 2005 at 02:49 PM
Punkin Poo, they'll learn the old-fashioned way - by having every parent in the stands scream at them like crazed lunatics on PCP.

It's posts like this that make me force myself to remember that this is a FUNNY blog, and not a place to share political beliefs.
must...find...soapbox...

"What happens when an exam is failed but, for example, three-quarters of it is perfectly satisfactorily done? It should be possible to do the other bits as add-ons afterwards and to defer the success of the exam."
In my classes, 75% is a passing grade. Besides, if the SAT was administered like that, I'd just take it 5 times... the first time, I would answer A for each question, the second time B, etc. 1600, here I come!
(never mind that the new SAT is scored differently and is not all multiple choice)
Posted by: Bismuth | July 20, 2005 at 03:08 PM
qetzal - THAT is a whole DIFFERENT problem!
gfunk - was meant not to be taken TOO seriously, just a little editorial comment.
Let's all hold hands and sing kumbaya....
Posted by: Punkin Poo | July 20, 2005 at 04:03 PM
Where was "deferred success" when I was getting my arse kicked for all those failures eons ago?
My laugher is being deferred!
Posted by: Dumbass Reporter | July 20, 2005 at 04:05 PM
"perfectly satisfactorily"?? WTH is that supposed to mean? That kind of wording is along the same lines as "lily-beige virgin".
Posted by: NiftyWitch | July 20, 2005 at 04:09 PM
Howdja like to have your physician be one of those who did not "fail" in his diagnosis class? Or, your EMT be the guy/gal who "almost" got the treatment procedure correct? Or, your lawyer ... nah ... not goin' there ... too easy ...
On the other hand, I am interested in some learning ...
I've got pix of grandsons ... is there any way I can post them moi ownself ... other than on a web site, or borrowing someone's good manners that would allow me use theirs?
(I checked the "new babies" site at the hospital, but they haven't posted any pix there, or I'd link it ...)
Anyone want to teach me how to do it?
Or, will my learning be "deferred" until Little Jake grows up enuf to show Grandpa how to do it?

Judge: Young man, how do you plead to your DWI citation?
Kid: Not guilty, Your Honor.
Judge: But the warrant states that you had a blood alcohol level of .22!
Kid: But I wasn't drunk, Your Honor. I was just in a state of deferred reality.
Judge: Deferred reality?
Kid: Yeah, you know, like the deferred success grade your daughter got in sophmore algebra last semester.
Judge:Hmmm...I see...
Kid: I also have a mullet.
Judge: Case dismissed.

No, no, no, Punkin Poo. I meant that I had to hold in my own indignation at the article. Nothing wrong with what you wrote. I enjoyed it. Hugs?
Posted by: gfunksizzle | July 20, 2005 at 05:12 PM
AN, I love it.
May I modify your term just slightly? Next time someone accuses me of being drunk, I'll say, "No, I'm just in a state of deferred sobriety!"
Posted by: qetzal | July 20, 2005 at 05:50 PM
Deferred sobriety WBAGNFARB
Or a twelve step program?
Posted by: VictoriaE77 | July 20, 2005 at 06:31 PM
So...I'm not divorced, but "deferred married?"
Posted by: slyeyes | July 20, 2005 at 06:39 PM
I would have to say that all these people live in a state of deferred reality.
Posted by: gfunksizzle | July 20, 2005 at 06:44 PM
yahoogroups has a really easy-to-use photo site, with varying levels of security, u.o., so you can make each page of photos or albums accessible to only those you want to see them, or to everyone, or some combo thereof. there is apparently no limit to the amount of k's used, and no charge.
hmmmm, the site doesn't seem to be working right now, though i can still get to my friends' photo albums.

Aunt Nancy -
Tnx4 the hint ... it's PC based tho, and I'm on my Mac ... HOWever, I've got the PC desktop right here in front of me (when I'm @ home, at least, for the moment) so I might just give it a try ... gotta explore the options a little more first ...
I guess also tho, that it's pretty presumptuousof me to let you guys pretend you really wanna see pix of my grandkids ... I'm guessing the hospital will mebbe get some pix up in a day or six ...
... but there's this really cute one of big brother with his face snuggled into the blanket next to little guy's face ...
AAAAGggggHHhhh! I'm letting my "sensitive" side show, for all the world ... (from another thread, is this a good pickup line?) (Yeah, right! AS IF!)

St. Judi -
As you can see by the posting times, your's was in the process as I wrote the above comments ... I'll take a look at that one too ...
But the "pushy grandpa with pix" still makes me a bit reticent about it ... I know I get overbearing at times with my face-to-face conversations ... picking up on some of my favorite subjects and then nearly beating the listeners over the head with them ... so, I'm gonna take this one ... a little slower ...
the pix will still be there in a few days ... tnx muchly for the outlet info ...
Posted by: U.O | July 20, 2005 at 07:17 PM
sly, you're in a deferred relationship.
BTW, I just became a deferred multimillionaire! Deferred drinks are on me!
(I was gonna be a deferred billionaire, but why be greedy?)
Posted by: qetzal | July 20, 2005 at 07:18 PM
qetzal - modify to your heart's delight. Actually, I like your terminology better than mine!
U.O. - don't be so hard on yourself. Cute baby pictures lighten the heart, so share away! It only becomes overbearing if you show a new picture every day for three months straight. Can't wait to see the new grandbaby cuddled with his big bro. You must be sooooo proud.... :)
Posted by: Aunt Nancy | July 20, 2005 at 07:32 PM
The guy supporting the proposal says "It's time we made the word 'fail' redundant ..." Clearly he has deferred success at understanding the difference between redundant and obsolete.
Posted by: Ol' Chumbucket | July 20, 2005 at 08:26 PM
How sad is it that these "educators" are spending all this effort on conjuring up a new lexicon for their failures when those energies could be applied to something like...ooohh...TEACHING ENGLISH, maybe??!! Next they will pull a statistics prof and an algebra teacher out of the classroom for a year to device an algorythm to show how failing kids should be named valedictorian.
Posted by: Martinishark | July 20, 2005 at 08:34 PM
They'll have to change the Langston Hughes poem to "What happens to a degree deferred?"

Yet another step in the Pansification of our "Yuts". Hmmm...there may be a band there - Pansified Yuts.
Posted by: JimW | July 21, 2005 at 03:33 AM
"She argues that repeated failure, such as in exams, can damage pupils' interest in learning. "
i'm just guessing here, but i'm thinking most of the kids repeatedly failing weren't much interested in learning to begin with

crossgirl -
Yeah, but the major question is ... why?
I'm not necessarily endorsing the "deferral" premise here, but often these "difficult learners" have something going on that started long before a classroom teacher entered the room ... I've seen it happen, and I've seen how the child eventually develops ... (nice enuf, but rather "unsophisticated" -- to euphemize it even more) ...
Education begins at home ... if the parents are keying on "You're nothing but a failure! You're stupid!" ... then it's a pretty safe bet that the kid will have problems learning, at least in the traditional ways (which are not necessarily the "best," either) ...
No, elimination of "failure" is NOT the solution, IMHO ... it goes too far with the concept of "learning at your own pace" ...
Posted by: U.O | July 21, 2005 at 04:53 AM
U.O. - You are soooooo right! Parents are the front line in determining the success or failure of their children. With encouragement and hands on assistance (ie parents and teachers working together) the so-called "difficult learners" can become successful. The thing that really angers me (as I jump on my soapbox) is parents who dump their kids at school and expect the teachers to provide not just learning, but also discipline and day care. Then, when their kid gets in trouble, the parents blame the school and teachers! And the parents who don't care whether their kid gets an education or not?? Don't get me started!!
*jumps down from soapbox*
And no, I'm not a teacher. But I am the mother of an autistic 11 year old who's doing incredibly well, and starts sixth grade in about a month. :D
Posted by: Aunt Nancy | July 21, 2005 at 05:15 AM
Oh, just shootin' blindly here, but did you notice that the failure rates for children increased dramatically when they stopped teaching phonics and went for a happy let's guess at the word approach? Then those parents who actually wanted their children to be able to read had to go buy that Phonics game and try to convince their children that it was a new take on monopoly.
Perhaps the problem isn't so much the children's ability to comprehend as their teachers all appear to be on crack.

Boy this thread is humor-deferred. Nice sermonettes, though. I enjoyed them. Really.
The only thought I have to add is this:
Mrs. Stuffin and I got a different definition for "happy slapping" if you get my drift.
Yee-Haw! Ridem Cowboy!

I like photobucket.com. It's free and easy. They even provide you with HTML to cut and paste.
Oh boy, it's almost time to eat some deferred crap.

Wowser!
Tnx muchly, for all the hints and suggestions on the pix sites ... I'm sorta getting behind already, and worked late tonite and I've got PT @ 0700 tomorrow before work and then it's get ready for the weekend in Fargo to see Little Jake ...
I'll get to it ... it'll just take a while ...
