Why, do I sound older than 23?
I have always believed that you are only as old as you feel.
I have an aunt who is lovely, outgoing, kind to everyone and everything, and practically a candidate for canonization.
When I was around 11, I learned that she was the same age as my mother.
I sincerely wish that someone had taken a picture of me. I was shocked. "No you aren't! You can't be!" The difference between her and my mother is just flabbergasting.
(I like that word. Flabberflabberflabbergasting.)

Y'all ... um ... KIDS!
Y'all (mostly) are young enuf to be my kids ... or grandkids, in some cases ... (Yas, I know there are a few here who I could've gone to HS with ... and that's reassurin' ... but the biological clock is tickin' away ...
You're as young as young/old as you feel?
If we're talkin' in the sensory sense ... aches, pains, stiffness in some joints and non-stiffness in other areas (HAR!) ... some days I feel perty old ...
If we're talkin' in the mental perception sense ... well, to paraphrase Ol' Blue Eyes ... My body may be *mumblemumble* ... but I'M 28! ...
And I think that (my mental perception of moi ownself) is whut keeps me goin' ... and it's whut keeps me returnin' to places like this, where the chronological age is ... immaterial, perty much ... sure, different levels/amounts of KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE ... (note: I did not say "intelligence" ... this gang is perty smart, IMHO) ... but the knowledge/experience is mostly a mere factor of time ... not brain power ...
In other words, y'all are helpin' me stay (feelin') young(er) ...
tnx 4 that

O. the U., we do what we can. I guess you don't want us to call ya "pops" or anything, do ya? ;)
Marie - it's not so much that you sound "older", it's just that Bumble and Sarah and Alfred have all mentioned being in their 20's, but I've never heard you say anything. 'course the folks who've been around longer than me probably already knew. :)
oh, and FLABBERGASTING.
Posted by: southerngirl | August 07, 2006 at 09:48 AM
Call me "pops" if y'all wanna ... or "gramps" ... tho "Uncle" is a teensy bit less discomfiting ... merely don't call me late to supper ...

Maturity is not only overrrated, it's superfluous.
I turn 50 next June. I have a lot of experience with avoiding maturity. But believe me when I tell you that it can be done.
If you can stay focused on the top priority, be prepared to make small sacrifices in the name of a larger more universal goal, view yourself in relation to the world around you, then you will be well equipped to successfully avoid maturity indefinitely.

... or ... "indefinitely" ... whut ever ...

Not definite, especially:
a. Unclear; vague.
b. Lacking precise limits.
c. Uncertain; undecided.

OK ... TOT ...
Some of y'all might recall a few months ago when the Blog had problems with changing/cancelling an internet account ... I might've mentioned that I had a similar problem ...
Well ... it's back ... this company -- which rhymes with MirthStink -- now has my $43.++ amount with a collection agency ...
I just spent about 20 minutes on the phone, finally talking to a human ... and ... she wants me to "call back in about two hours" ... 'cuz they're doin' a system upgrade ...
Actually, this time it seems as if there may be some progress toward resolution of the two-year-old problem ...
If'n y'all care, I'll let y'all know whut happens ...
Now, I'm off to buy some walkin' shoes, fer the Ireland trip ...
I'll check on Art later, I promise ... I missed breakfast, so now I gotta get somethin' to eat ...

This is still the "upgrade" at work that gives me new headaches two to forty hours a week here at werk. Upgrading my home system is REALLY simple since my "Frankenstein Marc Five®" really has no idea WHAT it supposed to be running anymore, so it will pretty much do whatever it is told. And upgrading a Mac is even easier... you throw out the old one and buy the new system.
{{{{sharon}}}}
Thanks for the cool off... though usually you tend to make things a bit more ummm steamy.

Its not missing... I neeeded something to hold the trash bag open while I shucked corn last night and forgot to bring it with me today. Halos can be multifunctional.
Posted by: CoastRaven | August 07, 2006 at 03:36 PM
CR, we get the same images as on the site I linked to on TV's Fabulous PowerPoint Channel that the CNES (space agency here) has running 24/7 with info on the launches, local things to see and do, etc. We watch the coverage and keep an eye on the countdown until 20 seconds before takeoff, when we go to our back balcony to watch it.
I'm not sure the above paragraph makes any sense, but you'll understand, I'm sure, that I cannot be coherent when I've just spent an hour and a half or so ogling Mulder and Scully and fantasizing about what kinds of sexual acts I'd do with them on their desks.
(For the Philes: the episodes I watched today were "Fire," "Beyond the Sea" (*sob*), "GenderBender," and "Lazarus".)

We can see the launches from our back balcony, and the end of the trajectories (visible to the naked eye, anyway) from our front balcony.
This is the view from our front balcony (actually, from the window of our computer-and-TV room, but it's basically the same from the balcony itself). It faces northeast, which means that we get a nearly constant breeze from the ocean, further cooled by the lake.
This is the rest of my blog. It's in Italian, but I post pictures more or less regularly. The two latest ones are of île Royale, 30 km or so off the coast of Kourou.
Posted by: Marie in Kourou | August 07, 2006 at 04:02 PM
When I worked at a TV Station we would Transmit the NASA channel as well. Some great pictures. They finally got permision to show them sending 'liquids' into orbit. And I saw what looks like 13 Hurricanes all going around each other.
It just makes me want to go up there. Unfortunantly I a over 6 feet tall and the shuttles are built for people shorter then me. For this very reason I want to design, build, and use an antigravitational unit to send my self into space...
Good to read that Sarah is better.

My high school astronomy teacher was selected to be a Teacher in Space, a program where they send teachers to space (imagine that!) I thought it was pretty cool. He is short, probably 5'4", so maybe that's part of how he was selected. I'm guessing his astronomy degree from Stanford was the bigger reason, though
Posted by: Sarah J | August 07, 2006 at 04:30 PM
DOWNER ALERT
Speaking of the Teachers in Space Program
My high school French teacher was good friends with Christa McAullife who was aboard Challanger. I skipped my Chemistry class to stay in my Astronomy teachers class that morning (It was okay with both teachers - not that its important). There are many things I will never forget from that moment, but one of them was the look on Ms Salinas' face switching from the tears of pride that were slowly falling down her face for her friend to the horror and disbelief that what we were watching on CNN was real and actually unfolding in front of us. "Obviously a major malfunction".
The VERY eerie coincidence (ISWEARIANMTU) was that earlier in the semester, David Goddell and myself were putting together a Space Shuttle Chalenger puzzle during the down times of Astronomy class (there were MANY), and when we were done we were missing ONE piece... from the right SRB!!
/DOWNER ALERT
off to work KILTies (2nd job - much more fun) talk to ya later!!
Posted by: CoastRaven | August 07, 2006 at 05:13 PM
Wow, Coast. The part about the missing puzzle piece is eerie. I was late to my French class that day because I saw the accident and couldn't walk away from the TV coverage.
Christa McAuliffe was from around here, and the Christa McAuliffe Challenger Learning Center is in Framingham, MA, which is about 10 minutes from here. It is not open to the public, but hosts selected groups of students on scheduled dates. I have had my eye on that 5th grade field trip for, oh, about five years now. I'll be diving on that opportunity this year to chaperone the trip with Sam's class!

Posted by: southerngirl | August 07, 2006 at 07:00 PM
I was pretty young when it happened. I saw the video several times on TV. It never made any sense. My parents kept the volume low. So I thought several Shuttles where blowing up. The teachers never told us what happenned. So it was years for me to find out any info. I didn't even know people where in there. Or that anyone cared. For years I thought that it should be cheered, like a fire works explosion.
So it quite odd for me to hear opinions on the matter now. Find out that people cared, and that it was seen as tragic. Ignorance can be a bad thing. Keep that in mind when something on TV happens. Your kids will remember it, but they won't know what it is.
To totally change the subject. Check out the Spam link I got. How did they know.... That I was Mormon.

I had just finished my French class and was walking through the Student Lounge and it was jammed with everyone sitting on the floor watching the TV, and it was silent. It took me a couple of minutes to figure out what was going on - awful, to say the least!
Posted by: Eleanor | August 07, 2006 at 07:28 PM
I was in my Physical Science class in high school...the office wheeled a television into the classroom so we could watch the coverage. It WAS awful, and classes just sorta stopped for the rest of the day.

Meanie, I think that with the high price of gas, we've been doing our part to conserve energy.
Speaking of energy, anyone have some to spare today? Which reminds me, they were talking on the radio about a commercial someone saw while watching MTV Real World yesterday. There was a commercial for something called Yellow Jacket Energy Drink. (I've heard of the pills, but now a drink?) Anyway, a girl drinks one in a bar, then goes outside and decks another girl.
Huh? Has anyone seen that?
