well - that's not very christian of him, now is it?

sorry about the double - it's hard to post from under the desk - hiding down here waiting for the lightning to strike

That's okay, Harry is not a fan of the Pope, either.

But on the brighter side...I ordered my Pope JP bracelet, as offered lower on MC's link.

Now to get my Virgin Mary thong....

That's funny, Punkin. I just filled out that online form to meet other catholic singles just like me! Let's also note that "Pope Benedict" anagrams to "I pee on bed, etc."

Excuse me while I go to hell, go directly to hell, do not pass go, and do not collect $200.

to be honest, this comes as no surprise. Lot's of people think that the Harry Potter books encourage young people to practice witchcraft and wizardry. But truthfully, it doesn't. Just tells a story, it does. A bloody tootin' good one at that.

Can't we all just get along?????

TCK - get out from under the desk!
M.C.: 1. The Pope, in all probability is not blurking here.
2. He may in fact have gotten an early copy of Harry Potter (if anyone could, IMO, the Pope could) and be reading it so he can tell all the faithful not to read it and know what he's taling about.
3. There is no hell, so if the anagram is what you said it is, then so be it!

talking about.

talking about.

talking about.

Nazism, however, is okey dokey.

Whatever.....

I deny everything.

Hey now, the Consortium already declared the books okay. Just cuz the Pope doesn't like them, you can still read them and be fine. I know lots of people who don't really like them for whatever reason. I however preordered mine.

Now, The Da Vinci Code is another can o' worms so to speak

He just hates all little orphan boys who are going to a boarding school that doesn't offer clergy a day pass at the all you eat pedophilia buffet...

*wonders if I can get a religious nut to say something bad about my book*

Oh, and you're all welcome to say something good about my book. Religious nuts or no :P

And I think his youth was far more mispent.

But at least we know he's not the anti-Christ.

(Thanks to Punkin for pointing out the links below.)

Silver - was it preordained as well?

Now if you will excuse, having finished reading a harry potter book, I must go sacrafice a chicken.

Actually I'm going to a HP party on mainstreet tonight. I wish I had a good outfit.

I see the blog is still misbehaving. *sigh*

Those are doops, not double-posts.

Androgenous Ray: go naked. It's always a memorable outfit.

Suggested titles for future Harry Potter books:

Harry Potter and the Well-Groomed Preist

Harry Potter on the Cher Fairwell Tour

Harry Potter and the Burning Rectal Itch

Harry Potter: the Sniveling Twit

Harry Potter and the Huge Royalty Check

Harry Potter and the Secret of Oprah

Harry Potter and the Boogers of Dave

Androgenous Ray: go naked. It's always a memorable outfit.

Harry Potter takes his long-lost favourite Uncle Omar on a world tour, along with all his previously unknown long-lost cousins, and then buys F.U.O a new GTO

Harry Potter meets Corniest Shiftier

(which JK Rowling cleverly made an anagram to hide the real meaning - "his first erection")

I knew we were going to have trouble with this one. Oh, sure, they can call him Benedict, but we know he's a Rat Zinger.

quidditch!
I am not at a Potter Party myself, but my son and $40 of mine are at this moment. Say, how much $ for this book? I want to know how much change I should expect.
*what happens at Potter parties, STAYS at Potter parties*

I wonder what the Pope's opinions are on The Wizard of Oz and The Chronicles of Narnia.

Wait...I don't wonder, after all. I'm too tired. It's been a long day, and I'm going to bed.

Marlo Dianne - I think your book has a great beat, and my girlfriend can dance to it. I give it a 9.

I also like your website. I thought I was gonna like it a whole lot more, but then I realized it wasn't really at 'deviant tart.com'.

Sure, you can read your kids stories about witches who want to cook little children and eat them, but stories about wizards who want to banish evil? That'll be a bad influence on them. I wonder what the pope thought of Lord of the Rings?

We must put a stop to the rampant wizardry being practiced by childeren all over the world!

"childeren?" Obviously, my kid has put a curse on my keyboard!

i've got mine, yayyyyyyyyyy :) two copies set me back only $38 total, da blade... but that was barnes and noble. other stores aren't discounting it as much. i saw it for $22 plus tax on the way home. i'm off to read, now, for as long as i can stay awake.

It's a sad, sad day for socialism...

*hands judi a Valium*

Put that book down and go to bed, young lady.

Topics must be blogged in a couple of hours, and Lord knows what time it is over in whatever country Dave is in now. Just because it's Saturday is no excuse. I expect at least one nekkid man or productivity enhancer by noon.

*crosses arms and taps foot expectantly*

IT'S A FICTIONAL CHARACTER, BENNY. get a grip.

Anybody else blurry-eyed this morning from staying up all night with Harry???

*slogs off to get her 5th cup of coffee*

So......how does it end?????

*snork*

Ack! My first double post! What makes that happen? Don't get my Harry Fix till Tuesday. *sigh*

Dang. You all stayed up late! I should have stayed up with you. I was too busy having panic attacks and tummy aches about college to sleep anyway.

Eleanor - if you have kids, and they're Harry Potter fans, this book is WAY more dark and scarey than the others.....and someone big dies... 'nuff said....

Argh! Must read! It's not Dumbledore, is it? Tell me it's not Dumbledore. Ever since Order of the Phoenix I've been afraid Dumbledore would kick it to make way for Harry or Voldemort to take the other out. I beg of you; tell me I'm wrong. I think I'm going to have to stay off the blog till Tuesday. And the internet in general for that matter. Do I think correctly?

My copy just came in the mail!! They told me it wouldn't. Perhaps the pope has a point, to a point. I'm waaay more interested in the life of a fictional character than I am in things that *ought* to be more important.

Bumble......um, ah.....nevermind....

I knew it. Damn. I hate when I'm right. I am right aren't it? I'm going to go read now.

aren't I, I meant.

I should have said a link to a petition. It's hosted and appears to be run by someone else. A minor technicality, I know, but it's driving me crazy.

Bumble, stay calm.....oooohhhhhmmmmm....
Repeat: I'm OK, You're OK

People are upset about these "modern day" children's stories??? WTF? Let's review:
1 - What did the 7 dwarfs do to Snow White anyway?
2 - The "wolf" ate Red Riding Hood's grandmother?!
3 - The ugly witch put Hansel and Gretl in the oven?? (I'm a little unclear on this one, but I think that's what happened)

And Eleanor, Let's not forget the story of the wicked priests who molested the innocent children... oh, wait, that was a reality show....

*applauds Punkin Poo's comment*

willing to applaud most anything at this point.

and, um, Hansel and Gretl caught on to the witches' plan and tricked her into peering into the oven, then pushed her in and slammed the door shut.
another concept i've always found vaguely disturbing.

Thanks, ib, I knew someone went into the oven - still disturbing - in other words, 2 beloved fairy tale characters are, in truth, homicidal maniacs - great!!

yeah, but i'm bettin' FCDA could get `em off on a plea of self defense.
;)

j.s. - I was thinking the same thing!! *snork*

Then you have the original Grimm Brother's Cinderella. A mother ordering her two daughters to cut off their heels and toes to fit in a shoe, and later, birds pecking out their eyes. Lovely.

Yeah, the Brothers Grimm were ... grim ... to coin a phrase ...

Andersen was sorta nasty at times, too ... but not as much as the Grimms ...

Gruesome is the word that comes to mind, when I think of the original versions of these tales ...

Which (gruesome) reminds me of a story ...

Guy walking a gal home from the dance (Old days, too poor -- or young -- to have a car):

It's dark, the moon and stars are out ...

They walk along ...

HE: "Sure is some moon out tonight."

SHE: "Sure is."

H: "Sure are some bright stars ..."

S: "Sure are."

(They are now walking past a graveyard ...)

H: "Sure is gruesome."

S: "Sure has, but I'm not that kind of girl."

Dave, you are my hero. Do you enjoy doodles. If you would leave a comment on my blog it would be sooooooo cool.

It took me seven hours but I am done!
I very much enjoy the Harry Potter books. I loved the Narnia books and The Hobbit / The Lord of the Rings as well, they are fun books. I do not see them corroding my Christian values, but then again I was raised by an Athiest and a Hindu to be a moral person without the threat of Hell and other evils like (apparently) fiction.

I cannot speak to the price, I have not bought any of them. I was going to wait to get a library copy like the last books, but it unexpectedly showed up at my house courtesy of my generous older brother.

Well, Amazon was supposed to have all three copies here by 7:00 PM today. So where are they? Held up at the post office, being scanned (whatever that means) along with the other gajillion copies that were supposed to be delivered today, and now won't be until Monday. So, to calm my wife and son, I went out to Ralph's (the grocery store) got two copies at $15.95 per, and was out of the store in under 2 minutes. You can bet I won't be pre-ordering book 7!

alanboss -

So, just FMI, does your Ralph's card get you an added discount on the books?

I got a shopper's card when I worked in LA for 5+ months, & even tho I figgered out the gimmick, I still stopped there in spite of that ... it was convenient and had the parking for my larger-than-average truck in the lot on Slausson, just west of the 605 ...

(I'm just showin' off here, even tho I'm home in Nodak, I can still remember how to find my way around in the jungles of the SoCal freeway system ... somewhat ...)

alanboss: that's why i won't ever pre-order.

btw, i got em for $18 each at b&n but they had them at cvs (the drugstore) for $22 and they didn't even have a single other person in the store.

i read for about an hour last night and then most of the day today; i finished it at about 10 tonight. enjoyed this book A LOT more than book 5; it just seemed more pleasant over all.

U.O. Yep! The card knocked off a few dollars.

Judi, I'm with you. I tell my wife every time tat pre-ordering isn't neccesary. It's not like the stores aren't going to have enough of them! And every store in the country. even hardware storess and auto parts places, seem to be carrying HP!
Good to hear that you liked it. I'll start reading it when mine actually arrives.

alanboss,

When you ordered, did you select free shipping? They wouldn't guarantee release date arrival if you got free shipping. If you paid for shipping, then that's crappy. Surprises me though. I've always found amazon to be very prompt. That stinks.

El, the reason Hansel & Gretel is Church-Safe(TM) is 'cause witches are baaaaad! Don't you remember this bit from the bible?

"Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live. Lest she turn you into a newt. Just pop her in an oven and burn her up, there's a good lad."

See? Harry Potter thinks witches are good. So Harry Potter is baaaaad!

well, it used to be necessary (pre-ordering) ... i think for book 3 it was, and maybe book 4, but now it's become such a huge phenomenon that, like you say, the grocery stores have em, and it's easy to pick up a copy the next day. if book 7 weren't going to be the last one, i would be willing to bet the midnight parties would not be so popular next time, now that people have figured out how easy it is to get them. but it still might be the same for book 7 since it'll be the end of the phenomenon and people will want to be a part of it.

when i was in line, i was talking to the man in front of me about how i enjoyed this, and he looked at me like i was crazy: "standing in line?" he said? and i said, "no, standing in line for a BOOK ;) this is EXCITING... to see all these people so interested in reading a book!"

Amen, judi. Seems like everyone I meet today thinks reading is boring. Whenever or wherever I'm reading, be it the doctor's office, on a plane, at work or at school, somebody will say, "I don't know how you can stand to read. I don't have the patience. It's so boring." And I hate it when people see me reading a book and want to strike up a conversation about the movie based on it when they haven't read it. I just want to scream, "The movie is nothing compared to the book! I'm trying to read! Leave me alone!" I only ever saw one movie I liked better than the book based on it, and frankly in that case I thought they both were dreadful. Once in high school I was reading a Dave Barry book during homeroom. I was laughing of course, but silently because people were trying to study, so basically I was just grinning and shaking with contained laughter. Some kid complained to the teacher that my "laughing" was distracting him, and she told me I either had to stop laughing or put the book away. They said the book wasn't really that funny and that I was laughing on purpose. Did I mention high school was no fun for me?

Laughing On Purpose - gnfarb?

Geez, Bumble, was this a military school or something?

unreal!

Nope, not a military school. Just a bunch of morons who don't understand how BOOKS could possibly be funny. We must pity them, not hate them brethren. :-) Laughing on Purpose- gnfa Dave Barry fan club, perhaps. Better name for it would be Reading on Purpose though.

qetzal - thanks for 'splaining - and here I thought the whole issue was about scaring little kids!

*hits head against wall several times*

Heh...I went to a midnight party at Borders, and got it for $22. It wasn't that bad of a wait, really, but some jerk butted in front of us right near the register. I only stayed up till 2:30 reading it! I'm still not done, though.

My younger cousins aren't allowed to read Harry Potter at their school...the school has certain books picked out for them to read during the school day. It's no wonder they don't like to read.

I bought my book at midnight at Barnes & Noble for $16.95 (members' price). It was fun to stand in line and chat with the other fans, look at the costumes, dis the people who don't let their kids read it, etc. The wait wasn't too bad, though, because we went earlier in the day and got numbered bracelets for our place in line later. We were #62 out of about 600. My daughter (16) stayed up all night reading it - took her about 11 hours. Then I read it - I have a cold and I was laying around anyway - in about 8 hours. It was great! My daughter took longer because she was online at the same time (what can I say, the girl is a multitasker), and, about 4 in the morning, some bonehead posted the answer of who died and who did it! I asked if she flamed the jerk, but she said she had better manners than that. At least someone does!

MAN, that's why i wasn't online much all day yesterday. because i woulda had to track 'em down and kill 'em.

I went to a costume HP party friday night at our local music theater, from 10:30 to 12. Lots of entertainment, Mad-Eye Mooney was the host....lots of dementors, etc....

But there was a reporter from the local newspaper who CLEARLY had never read an HP book in his life. I was dressed as a witch,I carried a dragon (puppet - big hit) and he asked me where I was from, I stayed in character (english accent, mind you)and said I was a shopkeeper from Hogsmede and I sold dragon food...he said "Hogsmede, is that in Massachusetts?"

Duh

I ordered mine from Amazon a couple of weeks ago, and selected SLOW (ie, free) shipping - and they delivered it to me yesterday afternoon at 1:00 pm, (free) plus today they sent me an email saying they'd dropped their price and were refunding me $1.99 on my credit card. I love Amazon.
I don't know how Rowling gets better each time. I was in weeping fits by the end. How long do we have to wait til the last one??

Punkin Poo- Massachusetts indeed. Hilarious.

Guin- Same here. Free shipping, got it day of, got a refund. I spend waaaay too much on amazon. I'm about halfway through the book now; my sister and nephew are visiting and have to leave tomorrow, so it doesn't have my full attention. :-)

Paid for shipping. Go figure. Of course, now Amazon will have to deal with it when I send them back!

I've only seen two movies that were better than the book. Oddly, both were directed by Robert Zemeckis."Who Framed Roger Rabbit" and "Forrest Gump." "Forrest Gump" may very well be the worst novel I have ever read.

Guin,

I just read an interview with J.K.R. She says that she plans to start writting it at the end of the year. That means it's at least a year away.

alanboss- I liked both those movies. Didn't know they were based on books. I've become the object of my own scorn. I better go to bed.

I got Harry Potter on Saturday free from the library. I was surprised to get it right away because I ws 144 on the reserve list, but they had ordered 150 copies. I even get 3 weeks to read it before it's due back.

Nobody has ever asked me how I can stand to read, and I read all the time in public. that is the weirdest thing I ever heard of!

ceeg22- Really? Happens to me all the time. Once I was on an airplane (squished between two guys I didn't know and didn't care to know) and I was reading The Jungle Book. One of the guys I was sitting next to was quite a personality, and he was feeling chatty, unfortunately. After I sat down and pulled out my book he said, "Oh, so you gonna be one of those that read and don't talk?" I decided to be polite, so I put the book down and said I didn't have to be. He then informed me that if he ever tried to read, he'd fall asleep, then told me his life story within about 20 minutes of takeoff. After that he laid over and tried to go to sleep. A couple hours later he sat back up and I asked him if he had a good nap. He said no, and I told him I could have leant him one of my books. He laughed, but didn't speak to me again, although that may have been because I stated that I found southern Baptist churches scary (I had just returned from North Carolina where my Aunt's church was having revival *shudder*) and he turned out to be one. A Baptist I mean. Not a church. Open mouth, insert foot. Oh, well. I wanna ride next to Dave on a plane. I bet he'd let me read in peace. Or judi. Either of you going to Portland at the first of August?

Guin,

I had the same thought about Big Steve and The Dark Tower. But as it turned out, the accident actually contributed to the story.
