That made my day! I will print it and tape it by my monitor and wish I could forward it to the spammers who waste my time.
Hope the whole time he's jailed he gets nothing to eat, 3 meals a day plus snacks, but...you can guess, right?

Yeah SMFTC, I noticed Earthlink even won a civil judgement against him. My ISP seems to do pretty well too. My crap content is minimal compared to what it used to be. Now there's just the bursts like when a new scam comes out.

7 years should be plenty of time to Gr0w a R3al1y B!g P.e.n.!.s.
Posted by: D'Artagnan | May 30, 2004 at 10:52 AM
Carmack (sic) was less than magnificent.
Posted by: Lmd33 | May 30, 2004 at 11:15 AM
What do you guys think is so funny about this tragic story?
Posted by: X | May 30, 2004 at 12:24 PM
I agree with you X. There is nothing funny about a man being sent to prison for 7 years.
Posted by: Y | May 30, 2004 at 12:25 PM
X and Y,
I also agree. My Dad was sent to jail last year for a victimless crime and it has been hell on our family. Teachers assume that I am a trouble case, my Mom can't find a good job, and neighbors don't want anything to do with us. I hope when this guy gets out, he can put his family life back together.

Victimless crime?? What about all those lost hours of productivity wasted, deleting spam??

Just an echo, not a spam...

XYZ--you wouldn't know John Quincy Adams there, would you?!
PS: check your zipper.

I'd really like to feel bad for someone that broke the law.............
But I don't............
Posted by: Graz | May 30, 2004 at 02:54 PM
Favorite line: "Carmack got the bad news Thursday in Buffalo -- and not by e-mail."
Now we need to get the guy sending spam from the nuclear bunker whose wife keeps writing what a great husband and father he is. (Unless this is the guy?)
"7 years should be plenty of time to Gr0w a R3al1y B!g P.e.n.!.s." Good one, D'Art. I guess he won't be needing all that V$ag&@ for a while.

Lesson #1 for future spammers: Don't use bigger name companies like Earthlink for your spamming needs.
Posted by: Angie | May 30, 2004 at 04:36 PM
Wonder how much spam is sent from prisons
Posted by: Rick | May 30, 2004 at 04:44 PM
Did you guys check the survey? I can't believe that over 70% of the vote wants criminal charges used as a method of control.
Doesn't that make anyone think?
Posted by: flano | May 30, 2004 at 05:35 PM
Considering that recipients of spam only have one nonlegal option -- ignoring them -- that doesn't work, I believe the answer is "no."
It should've stopped spammers by now, though. Further proof that they're idiots.
Posted by: Alex | May 30, 2004 at 05:54 PM
now i won't get any more email!! it seems all i get is spam nowadays. :-(
Posted by: keith | May 30, 2004 at 07:33 PM
Imagine if there had been another option on the survey:
D: Gather the villagers and go after the miserable crapweasels with torches and rusty pitchforks.
You know *that* would have been the clear winner.
Posted by: afurrica | May 30, 2004 at 08:40 PM
He got seven years because he sent out spam e-mail??!! Are you for real??!! What kinda country is the US of A where they give seven years to spammers??!! Damn!!
Do something, dudes and dudettes. If you guys here in the blog are the kind of people I think you are, (suave, intelligent, and articulate) with reasonably functioning brains, you should really petition your local, state, and federal lawmakers to raise the jail sentence to like 75 years.
Also, they must be forced to go through each and every spam mail they receive in their prison inboxes.
X, Y, and Z, don't get mad.
Y, I'm sure your dad was a different case, in which case it definitely is unfair. However, Carmack clearly was violating the law, and he must have been at all times aware of the fact that he was violating the law, and that at any instance this was found out, irreparable damage might be done to his family life.
Now that I have taken time to answer your troubling thoughts, please do not, I repeat, do not tell me that you were just joking, in which case I will just have to ask myself for the upteenth time why I bother with answering other peoples' questions.

Seth|Loop-
Thank you so much for taking the time to answer. I feel as though nobody understands how tragic it is to have one's father locked up for a victimless crime. Like X and Y, I don't see why this is a joking matter. With my father, it was pharmaceuticals and high class escort services. With this guy, it's spam. Your father could be next.
Posted by: Z | May 31, 2004 at 01:04 AM
"Also, they must be forced to go through each and every spam mail they receive in their prison inboxes."
Better yet: They should go through every unsolicited message they've ever sent out.
While licking the screen for each one.
X, Y, Z: If you want any real sympathy, try using your real name. Post your email address too, for the spam-bots to find.
And don't pretend to be 3 different people.

Yay! Dave posted my link! Thanks Dave. I don't think this is funny; I think this is justification. What is a "victimless" crime? Is society-at-large not reason enough to make a law? Running a stop light without hitting anyone is victimless, BUT the implications are huge. You may kill an entire family and yourself eventually. Therefore, I hope you get a traffic ticket and a trip to court to remind you next time. Likewise, if I didn't ask your company for information, I don't want your email. I will not buy V1ag*ra because I am a woman, why should I have 25 ads for it everyday?
Pharmaceuticals is victimless how? What was he doing? Selling low dosages? Selling counterfeit drugs? Selling expired drugs? Dispensing without a license? Any of these scenarios could KILL someone. Pharmaceuticals are legal, but there are laws for the safety of SOCIETY that must be followed.
Also, escort services are legal, check your local phone book, but they are often fronts for prostitution. In order for a person to be found guilty and sent to jail, there has to be evidence of broken laws. If there is evidence, a trial, and a guilty verdict, then a penalty is assesed. It is our job as responsible citizens to follow the law or suffer the consequences. If you think that a law is unjust, then you put your energy into trying to change it. Or you can sit around and whine.

Hmm... 1 year for (roughly) every 121 million e-mails... yet I'll never get back the time I wasted deleting all those pieces of crap, and the two e-mail addresses I lost when they were irrevocably swamped...
Posted by: Sharlit | May 31, 2004 at 08:20 AM
So the Google bombs have finally hit the blogs. I guess you didn't read the post rejoicing in a spammer going to jail.
Posted by: Alex | May 31, 2004 at 10:15 AM
Also, XYZ is one troll trying to piss us all off. Didn't work for me. Please don't feed the trolls.
Posted by: Alex | May 31, 2004 at 10:19 AM
Shouldn't we be celebrating not just the arrest of the spammer in the article, but also that of XYZ's spamming poppy? Two birds in one thread; I'm feeling giddy.

XYZ is damned funny. Read Jessica's and Alex's post above.

X, Y, Z, & W, since you seem to be such a caring person, perhaps you can help me with my problem.
You see, I've been contemplating removing some letters from the alphabet. I may even include "lmnop".
I mean we all have ego needs, even pathetic little ones, that want to be stroked and coddled inappropriately.
Do you have any suggestions for less intrusive ways of presenting one's ego needs?

This guy was not imprisoned for spamming, but for stealing and hijacking accounts to spam with. The prosecutors probably brought a seperate charge for each individual stolen account and anything else they could find, racking up a 7 year sentence.
Having had my e-mail ID hijacked before, I can assure you that it is most certainly NOT a victimless crime.
