The Love and Hope Ball isn't until February, but the kick off party at the Diplomat Country Club on November 15 raised nearly $700,000 for the Diabetes Research Institute. Bee Gee Barry Gibb, who along with his wife Linda is the charity's International Chairman, kicked off the donations with prize money he won from a recent celebrity call in contest on Virgin Radio's The Christian O'Connell Breakfast Show. "Virgin Radio was looking for crazy people to call up and leave crazy messages," Gibb said. "I did, and I was one of the five finalists selected. Then people were urged to vote for their favorite contestant. I guess we kno wa lot of people, because my phone call won." The prize, $30,000 pounds (about $62,000 US dollars), was to go to the winner's favorite charity, so Gibb donated it to DRI. He beat out fellow callers Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson. Insert Jive Talking joke here.
