A Funny Thing Happened to Me on the Way....
So me and my husband to be are schlepping bags and boxes out of the car in front of our apartment in the SoFi area of South Beach when all of a sudden, a hepcat sporting the same T-shirt as the future hubby---a CBGB tee--and a fiesty young man approach us and say, "What do you think of a CBGB in Miami?" We're like, heck yeah. There's this place called Studio A, which some of us, ahem, have described as a chic CBGB, so why not? Long story short, the man in the t-shirt was none other than CBGB owner Hilly Kristal, a legend in his own right, along with his entertainment lawyer. "All of this is off the record right now," the lawyer said until Kristal interrupted and said, "Well, no, you can say we're just scouting for a location here." Kristal said the place would be more of a merchandise, retail outfit with perhaps a music stage and the ability to promote other live music events in town. Whatever the case, Miami would rock if it had a CBGB, so we're all for it.

Isn't it great when rich people meet on the streets in front of their expensive homes? Wow. Thank you for sharing the rapture.

Wow! What a perfectly novel idea. Open a watered-down version of the original here in the land of the lame! Stunning business plan: To hell with the music, just offer pre-distressed cbgb t-shirts and replica tommy ramone drumsticks. Brilliant. I'm so thankful that you and your husband to be, poor guy, were there to get it first hand rather than through a "spy".

I've been to real CBGBs in New York; a CBGB here would fit in as well as Castro during a Calle Ocho parade. Miami's local music scene has never been groundbreaking (you had to go to Broward to hear decent bands) and opening a premier punk club here (though I would love it) is not going to work. This is the land of the reggaeton (however you spell that crap) and mindless hiphop. Don't betray a club that was the birthplace of lots of groundbreaking acts to bring it here so we can hear yet another Juan Gabriel or PitBull or whatever else passes for music in this god-forsaken city. Sirius radio, baby, keeps you sane!

This could be what Miami needs to emerge as an incubator of local live music. If Macon, GA and Austin, TX can have an excellent live local music scene, why not the Magic city?

A "merchandise, retail outfit with perhaps a music stage"? All you need is a restaurant that serves bland, crappy all-American appetizers and you'll be in business with a Punk Rock Cafe (TM). What a novel concept.

Isn't it sad when people are commenting on their distaste for "rich people" at 12:13am, and throwing aroung words like "rapture" to make themselves appear intelligent? What's up Eat the Rich? You got word of the day toilet paper or something?

And on a Saturday night, none the less! Wow. Sounds like someone isn't getting laid.

CBGB should grab the ol' Billboard club space. that retail space needs a jumpstart, and maybe a Cheesecake factory!!
