The stars were shining again on Sunday night, but this time, not for their own awards, accolades or egos, but for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Local based non profit Miami Beach Cares along with Skybar at the Shore Club and Jamie Foxx as host put together a last minute benefit at The Delano with all proceeds going to the Red Cross.Spotted in the crowd was singer Jon Secada (Jamie Foxx to Ocean Drive Magazine's Rich Santelisi---"You're not Jon Secada, unless he gained a lot of weight!"), hip hop music producer Timbaland, Detroit Pistons player Rip Hamilton, Miami police chief John Timoney, party girl Paris Hilton and record producer Scott Storch, singer Christina Milian, actor Colin Farrell and his mom, brother and sister, and, eventually Shaquille O' Neal.
There were, of course, many amusing moments, especially when Foxx was conducting the evening's live auction. As of around midnight, there was in excess of $400,000 raised. Foxx wanted a million. Among the highlights:
Hilton, surrounded by an overprotective Storch and bodyguards, refused to talk to anyone until Foxx arrived on the scene. Timoney, however, wanted a picture with the hotel heiress and she obliged. When Foxx arrived, Hilton went on stage and said, "There's a lot going on in the world that is bad." She then left the party hand in hand with Storch despite the presence of the engagement ring given to her by fiance Paris Lastis.
After being summoned back to the party--Foxx was looking for her and she was clearly not there, Hilton put herself on the auction block--a night with her at the grand opening of her Club Paris Miami Beach, on New Year's Eve. "New Years Eve with Paris Hilton is pretty great," she said about herself in the third person.
A man named Cecil Parker coughed up a whopping $250,000 for the honor. Turns out he works with Storch. "That was, like, so generous," Hilton said. "I'm crying right now. That was hot. Donate more please." Gag.
With Hilton dancing on a couch in the cabana while half the party watched, Foxx carried on and made more money for the victims. Colin Farrell auctioned a date with himself off and several women went wild to the total tune of $20,000. At one point, Farrell screamed "Mom, you better put your @@@@ing hand up". Farrell bought a pop arty Ray Charles portrait signed by Foxx for $15,000.
One aspiring thespian bid $25,000 for a speaking role in Foxx and Farrell's Miami Vice movie. He then upped the ante to $40,000 if he was allowed to say the "F" word in the flick. Foxx obliged.
But things weren't all fun and games. "The hurricane is a heart attack," Foxx emoted when introducing the president of New Orleans' Dillard University, Dr. Marvalene Hughes, who said "My university is underwater. I plan to rebuild my university." Foxx gave Hughes a long, emotional hug and then bid $20,000 for dinner at Nobu with Milian.
After an exhausting evening of playing auctioneer, Foxx was leaving the Delano when two eager women asked him where he was going. "I'm goin' to heaven, baby. It's a new club." After what he did for the hurricane victims, he truly earned his wings.
