Rate my fantasy draft. Annual poll. Vote now!; plus UM, Fins, Wade wedding star in new Hot Button Top 10; also U-Bird, FIU-Herald verdict & more

1) It is SUNDAY, AUGUST 31. In The Previous Blogpost (ITPB): FIU opens vs. Miami Herald with poll, Dolphins cuts, Dwyane Wade's wedding, Upset Bird Countdown, SOPY, Ikea & more. 2) Follow us on Twitter @gregcote. Also Facebook, Instagram and Vine.

1aa1aaflacduckUPSET BIRD COUNTDOWN: 5 DAYS: The Upset Bird and I launch our 24th season of 1aa1abird5NFL Friday Page predictions in the Miami Herald in 5 days, on Sept. 5. To celebrate we have a daily countdown honoring notable fictional birds of different species. Today (following NBA New Orleans' Pierre the Pelican), we welcome the Aflac Duck, who since 2000 has successfully peddled insurance. Main attribute: Far less annoying than Flo from Progressive.

RATE MY FANTASY DRAFT:  My eight-team friends 'n family fantasy football league held its draft earlier 1aa1afantasytoday and I invite you (as I do every year) to rate what you think is the best team, or the one you'd most like to have, based on each team's first three picks. I know that's tough but who said life was fair? Which trio would you most like to start a team with? It's a PPR (point-per-reception) league hosted  by ESPN. Teams in the poll are listed in the draft order. This is a blind list so you don' know which team is mine, but of course I'll tell you later. My draft. Now your verdict. Vote and say why.

HOT BUTTON: TOP 10 THINGS SOUTH FLORIDA SPORTS FANS ARE TALKING ABOUT: Our Random Evidence Sunday notes-column package has returned in print from summer hiatus (click here for today's latest edition), but due to broad disinterest popular demand an expanded Hot Button continues as a Sunday feature of the blog. Hot Button means what's on our minds as the sports week just past pivots to the week ahead:

1aa1ahotbutton1. UM football: Kaaya leads Canes at Louisville Monday: True freshman Brad Kaaya, son of a 1980s B-film actress, starts for UM in national-stage game that concludes college Week 1. Canes fans hoping the genes extend and that Brad, cast as a great quarterback, is convinging in the role.

2. Dolphins: Ready or not, here comes Patriots, NFL season: After 3-1 preseason, Miami opens schedule next Sunday vs. rival New England. Recent ESPN poll of league insiders ranked Bill Belichick the NO. 1 coach and Joe Philbin 29th. On the plus side, Joe is a snappier dresser.

3. NFL: Fins, others reduce rosters to 53: Rams released openly gay Michael Sam, while in Miami the only real notable cuts were RB Donald Thomas and kick returner Marcus Thigpen. Exit of Thomas, former 2nd-round pick, another reminder how good former GM Jeff Ireland wasn't.

4. Dwyane Wade: Heat star's not-so-secret wedding: Wade and actress Gabrielle Union wed Saturday night at Chateau Artison, an island castle in Redland in southwest Miami-Dade. Was supposed to be top secret, but never a good sign when the confidentiality agreement guests had to sign is leaked to TMZ.

5. College football: Noles escape, Gators don't play: No. 1 Florida State and Jameis "Crab Legs" Winston escaped Oklahoma State, 37-31, while in Gainesville, lightning forced a postponement of Florida's opener vs. Idaho. "I never liked the Gators," explained God.

6. Marlins: Playoff hopes slim, getting slimmer: Fish slipped to 5 1/2 games out of wild-card chase entering today's game. Are we still pretending they're sort of alive? I mean, I guess you can still Miami's playoff hopes, but it now requires a Hubble telescope.

7. Team USA: American hoops on stage in FIBA World Cup: Top NBA star like LeBron James and Kevin Durant are sitting out the FIBA World Cup, but U.S. swamped Finland anyway Saturday, 114-55, and plays Turkey today. Soon the U.S. may face a country where they actually play basketball.

8. NFL: League gets tough on domestic violence: It's now a minimum six-game suspension for first offense and lifetime ban for a second. Ironically, the tougher penalties for physical violence happened because commissioner Roger Goodell got beat up in the media.

9. FIU: School picks a fight with Miami Herald: Athletic director Pete Garcia refused a credential for the Herald's FIU beat writer, so the Herald declined to cover the team. That means FIU lost twice Saturday, once to Bethune-Cookman, and once to common sense.

10 (tie). NASCAR: Stewart back on track after tragedy: Tony Stewart races today for first time since Aug. 9 tragedy in which he struck and killed a sprint-car driver. Wonder if Stewart's legion of haters will break down and actually sort of almost be rooting for him?

10 (tie). Tennis: U.S. Open at midway point: Been a few upsets as usual, but major tennis remains our most predctable sport. As long as Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Serena Williams are still alive in the U.S. Open, we have our eventual winners.

Poll result: Herald has broad support in feud with FIU: The Miami Herald is declining to cover FIU football because the school denied a credential to its beat reporter. We asked who you side with and the Herald won with 81.6 percent.

Click back a lot because we update and add to our latest blogposts very often...

So, Greg, given the paper's feud, I didn't check to see how you guys reported it. After yesterday's loss against Bethune-Cookman, tell me did you guys didn't print: Bethune-Cookman 14 (that other team located at: 11200 SW 8th St., and which shall remain nameless) 12.

Greg, all quips aside, I'm in full agreement with The Herald's stance. The whole notion that somehow, this official from the university is free to control or silence what is being said in the press, goes against THE most important tenet our country possesses.

Wade is desperate for attention..since Lebron left he's not getting it..so he figure let's get married and get some..he was the brains to the Lebron to MIAMI fiasco..not Riley..or anyone it was Wade,,Why? He loves the feeling he got when Shaq was traded to the Heat..and wanted the feeling again..and the only player left with the Star Power was James..and he got it..next up for this attention whore is playin for the Heat one more year..and getting traded next season to another BigCity...maybe Lakers....he has a bigger Ego than James ..just knows how to hide it and act nice on camera!

Hey dude, why the hate for D Wade?...the man is a great local sports figure, And has not one, not two but three rings...your criticism is unwarranted.

Well the Dolphins season is upon us, let us all hope for the best, I think the Dolphins are going to add a couple of more players from other teams..TE and G ? Maybe another corner?... We only have four of those and way too many safeties.

Excited to see Kaaya monday night, remember Cane fans this kid is starting his first college game right out of HS on the road on national TV..this kid deserves our support, he is going to take his lumps and make mistakes , you all should realize that.

On the feel good dept..even god didn't wanna see the Lizards play last night, how about that.

11-5: Jimbo
10-6: real dave, OC Dolphin
9-7: Mr. Woodcock, mayberd, Tom
8-8: dukey, #WTF, roid rage, Naples Jack
7-9: FZB
6-10: Anti Christ

OC Dolphin,

i am joining you anbd the real dave at 10-6. this is a delusional pick, but with an opening game win over NE 10-6 could be reality!!!

Mr. Woodcock,

yor beloved trojans ran 105 plays against fresno st. that is an incredible number; how many times did fresno snap the ball? the dolphins won't run 105 plays in two games, even with their "new" speedo offense. 700+ yards!! they are already moaning about lane kiffin's dour attitude in bama's pressbox; mike garrett picked the wrong co-ordinator to be the HC a few years ago. sarkisan is a likeable guy who i remember as one of the long chain of BYU QBs; a guy who learned football under the much underrated lavelle edwards is okay by me. didn't UM lose to the slow white guys in provo during their glory days?

Is it just me, or did yesterday prove there is a little more parody in college football...

Top teams all looked very beatable yesterday....

"Parody." I think you meant "parity", but interestingly there was a bit of bad execution, especially dropped passes and horrible coverages. didn't look a whole lot like great football, save GA.

My Fins prediction is also 9-7, with at least 2 close losses due to either the kicking game or bad kick coverage. No one is talking about how horrible ST play was the entire pre-season.

Yes, it was opening game, a night game at BYU, featuring BYU's Heisman QB, and NOT the best Cane team.

Excellent stuff, and especially agree as regards support of young Kaaya, who should HIS loyalty keeping his commitment to UM.
LOL to the Gators cancellation. Only God knows how badly the Gators would have been beaten down.

should=demonstrated (showed.)
Anyone know if Rob Bironas, former PK for the Titans is currently on a roster?
He is the 2nd most accurate kicker in NFL history. It was a combo of $$$ and a bit less length on KO's as to why he was released. Dan Carpenter, anyone?

"49ers' McDonald arrested for domestic violence"
----
OK, WHY do we not hear NEARLY as much from the National media about the dysfunction that is the 49'ers, Ravens, Seattle and others, yet the Dolphins were just excoriated last year. Bullying is one thing, but excessive drug use and violent behavior another. The 49'ers are now a joke.
One wonders if Harbaugh will be a Dolphin HC next year, if the Fins go 8-8 or worse? hopefully, the problems don't point to Harbaugh.

Oops, forgot. Winning means EVERYTHING.

IMAWriter,

1990 may not have been "the best" cane team, but going 10-2 and then that awful display in the cotton bowl while winning 46-3 over a 10-2 texas says to me that they were a very good team that lost to another good team in BYU and clobbered another decent 10-2 bunch of longhorns. hey, it's not the biggest embarassment to go to mile high provo and lose to a sophisticated offense that popped slow white guys open against anybody (courtesy norm chow). methinks that as a cane fan you would triple gladly take a 10-2 type season this year with a dissection of a team in a bowl game. i differ with you on winning means everything- to point, that 46-3 score is not what people remember about the game primarily; i would say randall hill shooting his "six-shooters" in the tunnel after his scores is what many recall. yes, the canes won, but that team set the bar for noxious conduct on the field. one of college football's most embarassing displays- pre, during, and post game. the drubbing of texas in the cotton bowl gets lost in miami's horific display of non-sportsmanship. while not the best, surely one of the best teams that went loco in the cotton bowl.

Cote..you have eight fantasy teams?... Dude you need to get a life.

Atta boy Anti. Gotta love 6-10 or hows 'bout 6-9-1...

IMAWriter,

this bunch lost to BYU? how did the cougars score four times, and hold the canes to 21? "enjoy" this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I0i9s1L4dxM

16 penalties, over 200 yards in penalties, and six first downs by penalty; besides that, they were playing at warp speed while texas was at a crawl.

My only fantasy team is the Miami Dolphins BWAH HA HA(sp?)...

Even God and Mother Nature hate the Gaturds!

OC, Dolphins are deader than I am. Yeahhh...

i was at that game with my father; it was amazing.
the randall hill touchdown was the greatest. he ran an out pattern, caught the ball on the run and kept running through the endzone and straight into the locker room.
he then came out wearing a GREEN university of miami cowboy hat and was pretending to fire pistols into the air.
best college TD celebration ever. those were the Fing days i tell you..

just watched that video shadow.. WOW.
i remembered it wrong; i think randall hill wore the green cowboy hat in the press conference after the game.
darren smith, michael barrow, russell maryland and shane curry on the same defensive side of the ball?
YIKES.
yes.. that was an off year.. hahahahahahahaha..
we were sure spoiled, miami fans.
damn those were the days. i hope they come back soon.
go canes!

The Dolphins just picked up two players off waivers: corner Sammy Seamster from the Baltimore Ravens and safety Brandian Ross from the Oakland Raiders. To make room, safety Don Jones, and WR Damian Williams were let go.

ESPN has released their predictions for how every team will do. They've got Miami with an 8-8 record and in second place of the division. Their two Wildcard teams are the Texans and the Bengals, both they project out at 9-7.

Interestingly, they also see Miami beating NE in the first game rather easily.

http://espn.go.com/espn/feature/story/_/id/11377732/2014-nfl-season-preview-analysis-game-game-predictions-more-every-team

The Texans are not making the playoffs with Ryan Fitzpatrick at QB. That is the Dolphins spot.

No Tom, that is the Patriots spot. Fins win the AFC EAST outright.

Regarding the mentioned Palm Beach rag's comments.... no mention of Lazor upgrading the whole offense vs Sherman.

Harbaugh's got some major issues with his talented team in SF. Jeff Fisher's Rams haven't improved since he showed up.. Didn't the Rams have the first overall pick in the draft?

Maybe Hickey - Philbin (Coyle & Lazor) version ain't so bad.

Jimbo-are you smoking that good shit? haha

Guy's,While watching the post of the beat down that the Cane's gave to the Longhorns came acorse this gem including commercials from 1985.....

http://youtu.be/chw0jz4V7m0

Let me cut through the entire 3 hour game this is the game Miami beat the Irish 56 to 7.
Where Brent Musberger And Ira Persegien thought the canes were classless for scoring so much....
LOL I wonder if they felt that way the year before when they(The Irish) beat Rice 66 to 0......

My friend Mulva, said she predicts the Dolphins will go 6-10. That may be too optimistic.

There was no bullying on the Dolphins. Some chick felt she was mistreated so she quit the team. It was a ploy on her part because she was getting her ass handed to her every week. She had to come up with something so she made up a story about how the boys were picking on her, blah, blah, blah. And the politically correct media jumped all over it and just stomped a mudhole in the Dolphins.

I agree with Fatty...

Stephen Ross doesn't know what the F he's doing. But he knows that. So he's a better owner than Jerry Jones. He was right to chase Harbaugh, obviously. Was wrong to keep Ireland so long but what else could he do?

All he wants is to hand the franchise over to someone competent. Hopefully Marino can convince him to clear house after yet another middling season. All you idiots predicting 10 wins are delusional homers who probably predicted 10 wins and a playoff berth the last 5 years.

Tannehill isn't the answer and this roster is patched together with overpriced free agents. You can't win that way.

4 is the safest and best team. 7 is the worst and most likely Greg Cote.

The best Canes team ever was the one that lost to Penn State in the Fiesta. Vinny choked big time ( hey guys, I'm color blind). To this day, I can't stand him.

Fin's 9-7 and lose in first round. Uncle Fester signs a 3 year extension.

Dolphins 33 Pats 21

Mildly surprised Dolphins didn't pick up a G who was released Saturday.

No way No how Fins are only winning 4 games Craig Pee. Are you a Bills fan accidentally getting on the wrong blog. Bloke? Do tell.

roid rage

Nah, avoided the dispensaries in Colorado. Don't touch the stuff.

Limpiate, OC.

The Miami Herald has, is, and will be a communist rag sheet good only to wrap fish with or to line the bottom of a parrot's cage. They have been on the wrong side of almost every issue regarding Cuba since January 1, 1959. The Herald and its editorial policies are an anathema to the cause of Cuban freedom. Not only do they not deserve any respect what so ever from the Cuban community in Miami but they should be scorned at every opportunity and outed for their support of communist despots around the globe.

I'm sure that the FIU official that you question represents the values of freedom and liberty around the globe a million times more than what has been "Pravda on Biscayne Bay."

The next time that the Herald supports Cubans in Miami will be the first time.

Where on earth did you find the entire Canes/Notre Dame game? I had no clue that Youtube had complete games. Dude thanks a million for posting that, a treat indeed before tomorrow's game. Golden days indeed.

My fantasy team sucks the big wally. A tremendous decrease from the monster I had last year. Oh, well, the draft is determined by draft position and the moves others make before you pick.

Here's some of my players in the order picked. I picked 9th in a twelve team league.

1: Drew Brees
2: Monte Ball
3: Andre Johnson
4: Davis (SF Tight end)

Then I picked up Reggie Wayne, Darren Sproeles, Wes Welker, Knoshown Moreno, and in a nod to BB and to the fact that we increased the points total on rushing and receiving yards I took the white kid wide receiver from Miami.

I call the team "The Geezers" I'm going to need serious comeback years from lots of players just to make the playoffs.

"Oh the horror."

Yeah,Jimbo is you think the Phins are going 11-5 it might be more of a crack problem as opposed to weed...

Michel Egnew was let go by the Lions on the final cut...its obvious the guy can't play and looking back it was a bad pick by Ireland but EVERYONE makes mistakes in the draft , a couple of examples.

The genious Belicheat drafted Ryan Mallett in the third round just a couple of years back and he just traded him for a conditional seventh rounder , so there is no even a guarantee he will even get that.

And the Jets just cut Stephen Hill who was a second rounder also a couple of years back...

Its just the way it is.

Dolphins announced their practice squad players:

WR Tommy Streeter
QB Seth Lobato
WR Matt Hazel
G Sam Brenner
OL Tony Hills
LB David Hinds
TE Jacob Maxwell
CB Lowell Rose
DE D’Aundre Reed
DT Garrison Smith

roid I think Jimbo is channeling his inner (the real) david with that 11-5 pick.

FZB stop making excuses for Ireland. Sure some of the other GMs had misses, but they didn't whiff on an entire draft ala Ireland in 2013. Not a single starter on the Dolphins from that draft....NOT ONE!!!

Yeah,I like FZB but anyone who still defends Ireland at this point just sounds straight up ridiculous...the very few of you who still do need to give that shit up...

Starting to get some butterflies over this Canes game...yet,I feel strangely confident about a UM win...maybe I am fooling myself...

The Canes are still in the rebuilding mode. Even though they were not on probation the 2 year NCAA investigation had the same effect. I'm looking forward to 2016 as the year the Canes should really be back in full force. If they are not competitive by then it will be time to look for a new coach. Until then I'm just going to be patient. Al Golden was screwed by the Shapiro crap and in spite of that stuck with the team when he had options to leave. He deserves our support and the time to build a competitive team.

Louisville crushed them last December they'll more then likely win.....

Lou 35 Canes 14.......

Huh??? Louisville crushed them last Dec so that means they will when tonite? That's just moronic. Canes did not have Duke Johnson in Dec, they have him tonite. Louisville had Teddy Bridgewater, they no longer have him or their top two receivers. In fact, I believe Louisville is coming back with only 5 players from last year if I read correctly. Canes big time

6-10 and Tannehill sacked 100 times, OC
