Mon pm 3-3: Will Tiger Woods still break Jack's record? Poll. Vote!; plus James is King but Danny's still Miamarino, Kim Novak, Riley speaks & more

1) It is MONDAY, MARCH 3. Click on Random Evidence for our latest Sunday notes-column package, leading with Miami's Mad March. 2) In The Previous Blogpost (ITPB): LeBron vs. Marino poll, Tiger's withdrawal, Dolphins trade rumors, Richie's rehab, lovely mugshot & more. 3) Follow us on Twitter @gregcote and also on Instagram, Vine and Facebook.

Dolphins re-sign Grimes, send Fields overseas: Team came to terms to keep cornerback Brent Grimes today, not surprising but important because along with Cam Wake he's the steadiest hand on defense. Keeping Grimes the first win for new GM Dennis Hickey. Also today, Fins announced punter Brandon Fields would be one of three NFL players on a USO trip visiting troops in Middle East, along with 'Skins' Pierre Garcon and Saints' Jimmy Graham.

CHASING HISTORY, CHASING JACK: CAN TIGER DO IT?: Tiger Woods is the world's No. 1-ranked golfer again and coming off a big year. As I write in this column off yesterday's final round of the Honda 1aa1atigerjackClassic, Tiger is -- win, lose or withdraw -- stil the biggest thing on the PGA Tour. Which is why the back spasms that caused his withdrawal yesterday and make him questionable for the WGC event at Doral this week is such a big deal. Woods chases history as everyone else chases him. His majors total has been stuck at 14 still 2008. Five years ago it seemed certain he would surpass Jack Nicklaus' record of 18 majors. Now, Tiger is 38 and the odds seem against him, although his continued high level of play and fierce drive make him tough to bet against. Nicklaus, it should be noted, won four majors when older than Tiger is right now, including his last at age 46. So, will Woods do it? This isn't asking whether you hope he will, but whether you think he will. Take a dip in our poll and say why.

KIM NOVAK'S FACE FRIGHTENS OSCARS, MILLIONS OF VIEWERS: My Oscars review: Gravity cleaned up even though the biggest awards went to 12 Years A Slave (picture), Matthew McConaughey from Dallas 1aa1aknovakBuyers Club (actor) and Cate Blanchett from Blue Jasmine (actress). Host Ellen DeGeneres was good-not-great. But the night's memorable moment for me was the gruesomely startling appearance of actress Kim Novak, 81. As visual evidence here indicates, Kim is an old woman still in the desperate throes of trying to appear, what, 40? I believe this may be possible, from a distance of approximately 100 yards. I wish people like this -- the plastic-surgery/collagen/Botox crowd -- would explain their intent. Does Novak think this is a good look? Does she have no friends or loved ones to be truthful with her? I mean, a 600-pound man can wear vertical stripes because they're thinning, but he's still a 600-pound man.

MARINO EDGES LEBRON FOR MIAMI MOUNTAINTOP: We asked in the last blogpost in what we called the ultimate Miami sports poll, you responded, and 50.4 percent of you said Dan Marino is still our greatest all- 1aa1adannytime athlete. LeBron James drew 45.8% and the other 3.8% voted "someone else." (C'mon, people. Who else!) I respect the vote. I personally think LeBron has now surpassed Marino. James has accomplished more in his career and is a bigger national star than Marino ever was. But I also understand that Marino spent a long career here exclusively and we've only had James four seasons. Guessing James almost certanly would win this poll if he re-signs and does what's doing a while longer. For now, though, the lasting aura of Marino proves resilient to even the King's challenge.

PAT RILEY SPEAKS!: The Heat's 17th annual Family Festival on Sunday found club president Pat Riley -- pictured right rockin' the Sonny Bono look in his flower-power-era incarnation -- unsually chatty. Some nuggets: On his own 1aa1arileshappiness--"Six years ago when I was coaching I'd wake up at 5 a.m. and it was dark and I was depressed. Not anymore." On his team--"They are so fun to watch. They're on a mission. You've just got to keep in mind, we've got a long way to go. Everybody thinks it's right around the corner [but] a lot of stuff can happen. Stay on track with the defense and the rebounding and I think we'll be OK." On Greg Oden--"I root for him more than I ever rooted for anybody. I knock on wood and cross my fingers every day he stays healthy." On LeBron James--"He wants to win and that's all it's about. All the other stuff that's flying around like butterflies, they're just things. And he deals with it as well as anybody. I'm so proud of him and Chris [Bosh] and Dwyane [Wade], that they're able to subjugate. Look what it's brought them. And it can only get better." On Wade--"He's like a son to me."

Yup BB, the Bucs uniforms just barely edge Dolphns for Ugly Achievement Award. Actually I could conceivably stand the sight of Fins unis if they lost the whale on their helmut. As Ricky Ricardo would say, "It's just so ridiculous..."

4 seasons of LeBron and Greg is ready to crown his a*s he may have accomplished more but 17 solid seasons of highlight reel football games wins today. Dan is forever in our hearts and minds.

Philbin and the Black Widow resign Brent Grimes to what appears to be a very cap friendly 4 year deal. Not bad.

One important piece nailed down several more to go.

That back stabbing whore and Philbin are off to a good start this off season as this is much better than having to franchise Grimes.

Any details on deal FZ numbers?

LOL I didn't look at the name just what you wrote you sounded like him!

Tiger at 38 with a bad back has no shot Jack shall remain the GOAT. GO SERGIO!!!!!

Tiger will not break Jack's record. Tiger would have to take a page from NBA greats who learned to play and win differently once realizing that their bodies could no longer deliver the same performance as in their youth.

Tiger's swing has always been full-tilt stressful, and I don't think his ego will permit him to play with a dialed down swing that loses two clubs distance per what he's been accustomed to.

The Barry in Chief just announced that he's boycotting all exports of Cracker Jacks to Russia for the foreseeable future......Nice move.

Very effective, Barry, very effective........

"You don't just, in the 21st century, behave in 19th century fashion by invading another country on a completely trumped-up pretext,"

John Kerry

The lack in comprehension from the elite, liberal inteligencia never ceases to amaze.

whoa what U know..the back stabbing bitch and clue-less Joe did something good for a change, looks like a fair deal for both sides..

now our next priority is a LT and a guard for sure..hopefully we can go after Monroe.

can somebody tell Kerry that the Ruskee's consider the Ukraine as part of their country and there fore they don't think is an invasion?..

happy to report I did not watch a milisecond of the Oscars...

oye OC...I don't follow golf at all but even from this untrained eye Mr. Tigre is finito, kaput, forget about it, no bueno...

he does have however a nice piece of ass to come home to.

This is only ironic because the Republicans invaded another country on a completely trumped-up pretext.

Flip flopper Kerry is useless. It is an invasion but can we start aligning with Russia already? Superpowers being friends seems like a better idea. Obama just doesn't like Putin so he takes his ball and goes home. Isn't Putin and most of Russia Christian now? Let's get outraged about terrorism.

EVERYONE and I mean EVERYONE knows that Obi is Putin's bitch and has been for a long time now.

Retardencia, mainstream Republicans suck too. Just not as devastatingly so as their Democratic counterparts and their leftist fringe.

Mitt Romney for President.

FZB looks like Baltimore may have to franchise Monroe they are reportedly far apart in contract talks.

BB..I agree, Baltimore would be stupid to let Monroe walk for nothing..

Sergeant Bilko had better credentials to be commander in chief than Barry Obama does and he was a TV character......

"Obama just doesn't like Putin so he takes his ball and goes home."

Obama doesn't like Putin? Are you F-ing serious?

Don't let D'Quell Jackson leave Miami tonight. Sign him he's a baller and then say goodbye to Phillip Wheeler and we are on our way big time.

Obama hates Putin I think yes he didn't have the common sense to show up for The International Summit possibly out of spite. Of Course I am just reading the tea leaves don't get too worked up there Billy Maher.

Brent Grimes says if team had made "a few more plays" Dolphins could have been 11-5 or even 12-4 last year.

I feel vindicated already. My thoughts exactly Brent congratulations on your new contract you earned it.

Dennis Hickey already appears to have 10 times the people skills that our former GM had.

BB...Ireland's people skills pale in comparison to clue-less Joe's incompetence as a head coach and that of his coaching staff..good players come here and play worst and our bad players leave a become productive...

Jimmy Wilson has improved. Nolan Carroll has improved. Koa Misi has improved. Jared Odrick has improved. D. Shelby has improved. Ryan Tannehill has improved. C. Clay has improved. R. Jones has improved. B. Grimes has improved. I understand some of your point regarding a few players but your statement isn't completely accurate.

all righty then..we are going to have to disagree on clueless Joe.

FZB

The problem with Wheeler and Ellerbe is they were good in 3-4 defenses but are not well-suited for 4-3 which was proven last year. Ireland should have known that. That was his job. But like the mistakes he made with Wheeler and Ellerbe he made a similar mistake with Dion Jordan. His skill set is not well-suited for the 4-3. He is more a OLB in a 3-4 scheme. Can't squeeze a square peg into a round hole. And to make matters even worse with Jordan, Ireland drafted Jordan to play a position of strength for Miami and left a gaping hole on the left side of the OL in the process. That gaping hole more than anything else cost Miami a playoff spot last year.

Tom..drafting Dion Jordan was not the problem, the guy has a world of talent but playing him out of position IS the problem, LB's can adjust to both schemes..Jordan should be an outside LB in the 4-3.

shows you how bad and incompetent out coaches are..

playing the result signing Wheeler was a mistake but I do seem to recall more than a few guys on this blog liking the move at the time, same as Ellerbe..

here's what I would do..

Misi would be my MLB..Wheeler to strong side LB and Jordan to weakside LB...no need to sign anyone else.

oppps...Ellerbe to strong side LB...

cut Wheeler..

Don't mean to interrupt but D. Jordan isn't good enough or strong enough yet to play the position our DC said so recently. Can't go into the season assuming he all of a sudden will be starting OLB material. Wheeler is likely here to stay due to a 5 mil cap hit if he is released I would still cut him and take the hit if a deal could be worked out with D. Jackson. J. Jenkins is still in the mix as depth guy.

Ellerbee and Wheeler were both bad can't blame it all on the 4-3 scheme they weren't exclusively a 4-3 team.

BB..stop it, you can't believe anything Coyle says, he's clueless just like his boss..

you guys make it sound like Jordan was a 5th rounder, he was the number one defensive player coming out of college, he had shoulder surgery and no off season program and then he was played out of position the whole year..no he needs to start at OLB this year, my NFL guy laughs every-time I bring up his name, tells me how he was mishandle by our coaching staff, tells me our coaches are not held in very high regard around the league..not very good teachers he says..and also tells me the players don't think much of Philbin either.

Jeff Ireland thinks he was mishandled by our coaching staff too. Philbin accused Jeff of "mishandling" the roster. Around and around we go.

BB...the biggest reason our defense was so bad at the end of the year falls on the offense and the lack of a running game, Miami simply couldn't run the football and control the tempo of the game, if you do that the defense can stay off the field and be more productive in the long run.

if we fix our offensive line our defense will suddenly become a lot better..

At least this year we will hopefully see a big improvement in his play. He does have the ability if he gets stronger and keeps getting advice from Jason Taylor maybe we have something in the kid. I just don't think it will be at OLB it will be at DE. Hopefully I am wrong and he ends up being a beast in both schemes.

Brent Grimes says if team had made "a few more plays" Dolphins could have been 11-5 or even 12-4 last year.

I feel vindicated already. My thoughts exactly Brent congratulations on your new contract you earned it. -baby

as do I. it's what we've been saying all along, but tom seems to think i'm tom for brains for predicting we'd go 11-5.
guess tom thinks grimes is a moron too.
and tom?
"The problem with Wheeler and Ellerbe is they were good in 3-4 defenses but are not well-suited for 4-3 which was proven last year. Ireland should have known that. That was his job." -tomfoolery

it WASN'T his job, douche bag.
it was the coaching staff's responsibility to coach the talent management acquired, genius.
we've slipped defensively the last couple years we've played the 4-3 and IT WAS ON THE COACHES to recognize that.
ireland grabbed the best talent available.
keller.
grimes.
wallace.
ellerbie
wheeler.

coaches are supposed to COACH talent.
shula was able to win with a team that NEVER passed, and a team that always passed. he changed his system multiple times on both sides of the ball to accommodate the talent.
in fact, his coordinator, (arnsparger), even INVENTED schemes to fit the talent we had.
STOP BLAMING IRELAND FOR EVERYTHING YOU IDIOT.

just saw your post earlier "congratulating" me for the charity event.
thank you.
and duh? NO ONE got paid for that event, thank you very much.
we put in about 15 hours of rehearsal and the show was a couple hours.
tom?
i will take that comment as a peace offering and as a result, i will not call you an idiot anymore.

you guys are so stupid. what do you expect Grimes to say. WE SUCK? My goodness get a grip.

Cote.... by the looks of that picture Kim Novak has NO friends, at least honest enough to tell her that the makeover didn't take. Yikes! What was/is she thinking? Do they not have mirrors in her house?

Maybe we should send her to negotiate with Putin and she can threaten to disrobe if he doesn't pull out of the Ukraine. Now that is a real threat!

aaahh, its good to see you two kids smoke the peace pipe.

and Tom...do try to at least entertain the idea that maybe one of the reasons we sucked last year was because of coaching.

God Kim Novak was such a sexy honey when she did Vertigo and Bell, Book & Candle with Jimmy Stewart. Granted she's in her 80s now but any shot at dignity has been ah thoroughly drained from her face. Eh what are ya gonna do...

Dukito..you guys are getting another blizzard?..goodness, I think you should make it a point to come down to the 305 every once in a while, I mean I think today is all the way down to like 85 degrees..

FZ this has been worst winter up here in 50 years according to some who have been around long enough to know. It is the winter that just won't end...

You guys are talking about the Dolphins when there's a buying opportunity to be had here as Hijo de Putin lays the wood to Obi and the seven dwarfs in Europe. This moron Obama thinks that the Euro trash is going to sanction the Ruskies for anything when he's got his hand on the valve controlling the flow of gas into Europe.

I don't think Obumer has seen the movie The Godfather.

Man I wouldn't mind seeing Ellen and Anne Heche sucking and f***ing each others pussy. Definitely more interesting than watching the Fins. Bet ya Ellen and Anne filmed a few of their sessions for posterity.....

How but Anne and Ellen working on Kim Novak's pussy in attempt to relieve ome of the severe tension from Ms Novak's face...

SOME of the severe tension...

Just sayin...

Well..good news I think...it looks like both Albert and Monroe will be available in free agency.

Still laughing, and I feel so ashamed...
BTW, I believe Ellen's squeeze is Portia di Rossi, former Ali McBeal honey.
if I'm incorrect regarding Ms di Rossi.............................................................
Bygones.

Guys, even here in the southeast (Nashville area) we've had below zero temps BEFORE the wind chill jus factored. Most prolonged winter since forever.
However, my sympathy to those up north. It's been brutal.

Almost forgot,
Woody, the Sgt Bilko reference (played by the brilliant Phil Silvers) had me spitting up my porridge! LOL

LeBron can't hold Marino's jock.

no, we didn't expect him to say we sucked.
but he could've easily said what others have said in the past, you are what you're record says you are, etc.
it's interesting that he thought our record could've been what baby and i and others suggested it could have been.
all things being said, the lack of a commitment to run the ball just 20% more resulted in 3 losses.

FZB you want me to entertain that coaching was the problem yet to this day you give Ireland a pass for all of his bullshit moves. In any event, I never said the coaching was perfect. What I said was it is impossible to give this coaching staff a grade because they were handicapped with poor talent at critical positions. OL, RB, LB.

just sayin...

no player ever says you are what you're record says you are. get me a quote and citation of any player on a poor team that says you are what your record says you are. coaches? maybe. players? never.

Yes, yes very helpful FZ thank you...

The King dropped 61 on Charlotte tonight..wow.

Tom..all I said is for you to consider the coaching was part of the problem.. Later.

Marino is so much better looking than Lebron! I voted for Danny 100 times!

FZB

I did consider it and concluded that yes coaching had a minor impact compared to the devastating impact of having Ireland as the GM. Worst GM in Dolphins history and second isn't even close.

GM resigns Grimes. Great move. Lets see what he does for the O line & draft. Daniel Thomas done in Miami? Bring in another bigger sized back? Stay with smaller, more exposive backs in Miller, Gillislee, Thigpen?

Saw a mock draft online projecting the first round,,,, said Fins will surprise everyone and take a WR. Really? And you do this for a living?

Brandon Albert comment. Good move, should have pulled that one off a year ago. I could see letting Long walk only if you had a solid plan B. Throwing Martin over there was a mistake. Miami should talk with McKinnie about staying but possibly changing positions on the line,, just be up front & honest with the guy.

Tom, I hope your right about this coaching staff. You were spot on about Cam, Ginn from day one. This new O Coord looks like a great hire. Time will tell.

FZB,
Sir, you have an eye for talent....

Jimbo

Mckinnie will have no problem moving to RT. The guy is just hanging on by a thread in the NFL as it is.

If the Fish take care of the OL in free agency, which they should, I would not be surprised to see them take a WR or LB in the draft. The Dolphins sorely need a big over the middle WR who can catch passes without needing space. Wallace is not that guy.

Actually I wouldn't mind seeing Miami pick up Sidney Rice in free agency. He's been injured the past two years but if he gets back to health he would be a steal for Miami much like Brent Grimes last year.

IMAWriter, I just caught your dilemma. Don't feel ashamed, I have that effect on people. I've taken 50-60 year old men back to middle school plenty of times...

Gibson is that guy.

Gibson is not in the same league with Sidney Rice when Rice is healthy. Gibson is 6' while Rice is 6'4". Rice is a 15 yd per catch guy while Gibson is a 12 yd per catch guy. If Rice is healthy he is a better fit for the big WR Miami needs.

Similar players I think Gibson can be that guy if given the chance 6 ft 205. He was having a great season last year prior to injury. If they want to bring in Rice fine no problem with that but my bet is he never will have as good a season as Gibson moving forward guy has done nothing besides a good season or 2 in Minnesota years ago. Maybe he catches lightning in a bottle and overcomes his declining numbers for some team but doubt very highly it will be in Miami especially with the emergence of R. Matthews. NE goes to the NFC championship games with undersized WR's regularly it's a recipe that can be repeated.

AFC.

Agree with BB, don't see a need to grab any type of WR unless some stud fell into the 2nd round... AFTER a 2 starting O linemen were obtained ( 1 Free Agent & 1 Drafted in the 1st Rd)

What are G John Jerry's chance of being resigned? The team indicated they were going to get rid of mr. lardass every yr for the last 3 yrs. 50/50?

Jimbo after he was mentioned prominently in the bullygate report I would say his chances are likely zero of coming back.
