Wed pm 3-26: Who is greatest Ralph of all-time? Urgent new poll. Vote now!; plus Heat lose at Pacers, Diddy's parenting, topless protest & more

1) It is WEDNESDAY, MARCH 26. In The Previous Blogpost (ITPB): Heat panic poll, Bosh's birthday bash, Marlins' Samson acting, Madness takes a breather, Sweet 16 odds & more. 2) Follow on Twitter @gregcote.

WHO IS THE GREATEST RALPH? VOTE NOW IN THIS IMPORTANT NEW POLL: Buffalo Bills owner Ralph Wilson died yesterday, and that got us thinking. Who is the greatest Ralph of all-time? I love the name Ralph. To me it sounds funny (ralf) and is a comedic name, yet its origin is nobly masculine ("wolf counsel") and it has identified some very accomplished people. I have winnowed the great Ralphs to 11 for this poll. Did I miss anybody? This is purely Ralphs, no Rafaels, but a special hometown shoutout to the late Rafael "Ralph" Sanchez, founder of Homestead-Miami Speedway. This is a Boutique Poll. By that I mean it may be unpopular and of interest mostly to me, because I'm weird. OK. Onto the poll: Who's the greatest Ralph and why? Let's get Ralphing!

HEAT FALL AT PACERS: Eastern Conference rivals split two games in December, now Grudge Tres on Wednesday night went  to host Indiana, 84-83, despite LeBron James' 38 points. It was must-watch TV, deliciously physical and acrimonious. (Click on Playoff Feel for today's Heat-Pacers preview column by me). This has turned into the best rivalry in the NBA, and tonight only furthered that. Heat was up 80-76 before faltering. Didn't help that with 2 minutes left Dwyane Wade went out with an apparent hamstring tweak, underlining the question, "Can the Heat count on Wade physically?"

Heat three-peat confidence eroding, but still there: We have asked three times now at spaced intervals: Will the Heat win a third straight NBA title -- yes or no? On Oct. 29 (preseason), it was 83.0 percent yes. On Dec. 12 (with a 16-6 record after a loss to Indiana), it was 70.4% yes. Now, in our latest blogpoll, it's down to 62.8% yes. Interesting trend.

ART OF SPOILING CHILDREN TAKEN TO NEW LEVEL: Sean "Diddy" Combs is planning a lavish Sweet 16 1aa1amaybachbirthday party for his son Christian and has hired a brand placement company to elicit swag to fill goodie bags in exchange for Facebook and Instagram mentions from Diddy. In 2010, dad gave son Justin a $360,000 Maybach for his 16th birthday. By my reckonming there is no way either Combs child will be able to avoid spiraling into a Bieberesque life of entitlement, drugs and arrests or, even worse, involvement with a Kardashian.

1aa1aspaintopTOPLESS PROTESTORS CRASH PRO-LIFE RALLY: I so seldom get to write a headline like that. To me it has a "headless body found in topless bar" vibe. Anyway, in Spain on Sunday, topless female protestors painted like skeletons crashed an anti-abortion rally. Presented is an arresting image. Literally.

NO CONTEST!!!!!!

the bus driver from bensonhurst will win by a country mile!!!!!!!

Wow, Greg. it must really be a slow news day. Greatest Ralph of all time?! Well, if you must, but you left off Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino, better known simply as Raphael.

Archangel Raphael was not too shabby either.

shad is right and second place ain't even close...

Alice: Boy, you men kill me; you're all alike. You push us around. You want us to bow and scrape at your feet. All you do is yell and scream and give orders. You men just think that you *own* this world!

Ralph: Yeah, but you women get revenge. You marry us!

Sorry guys my generation votes Macchio or Malph those two were household names. The Karate Kid? Happy Days? Cultural icons those two.

I always liked Ralph Macchio

Have to think he has a source but hoping it doesn't happen. I think Wallace has more upside than D. Jackson at this stage of their careers.

BB..Wallace's contract makes it impossible he'll be traded this year..now next year they can walk away from him with a much lower cap hit.

Would really like to know who his source is. I don't think that is an accurate report.

this is another famous Raphael..in Spain and Cuba at least.

FZB of course the Dolphins want to unload Wallace. Ireland way overpaid Wallace for limited production. $15 million this year for a 12.7 yd per catch sub-thousand yard WR is a colossal waste of money. Hartline produces more and costs half as much.

FZB is right about Wallace's contract almost eliminating trade opportunities. And there is good reason. Wallace is not worth anywhere near the $15 million he will be paid this year. If there is a trade, Wallace will absolutely have to negotiate a new contract. No way the new team pays him $15 million this year. Which creates two possibilities. First, Miami does get a trade partner and Wallace renegotiates. Second, Miami just cuts Wallace, takes the $8.8 million cap hit and moves on.

Wallace for Desean Jackson is an interesting option. They're the same age. Jackson averaged almost 4 yds per reception more than Wallace for about 400 more yds. Wallace only catches about 1/2 the passes thrown his way while Jackson catches 2/3s of passes targeted at him. And to make it even better, Jackson will earn $5mil less this coming year.

Think about it. The Eagles may dump Jackson who has way more production and only earns two-thirds of what Miami will have to pay Wallace next year.

Problem is will Wallace accept a revised contract or will he want to become a free agent again? In free agency what would you expect him to get? maybe $6 or $7 mil a yr max. If the threat of getting cut is real, it may happen. But it has to be a real threat. Kind of the way Kelly is hanging it out there that he might cut Jackson.

Well GM Hickey do you have the balls to play hard ball with Mike Wallace? Let's hope so.

uno momento there Tommy-Son, the Wallace contract is Irelan'd fault since he over paid for Wallace (which I do agree) but when is a good contract cap wise the BSB get's the credit?...hhmmm

please explain that one amigo.

which free agent contract did i say was good? NONE. You won't find one. Not a single one. I didn't even like the Grimes contract because it was for only one year.

$60 million for Wallace was ludicrous. Every expert said so. Who do you blame? Parcells? What did your scout amigo say?

Great post about Mike Wallace Tom.I voted for Ralph Nader as the greatest Ralph because of his consumer protection work on cars, food, airline safety.Abernathy deserves votes for being Dr Martin Luther King's right hand man in the Civil Rights movement also Emerson and Kramden deserve votes for their great work who makes people think or laugh but Nader's work on auto, food and airline safety has probably saved many lives.

Armando says Miami isn't shopping Mike Wallace and haven't been at all. That seals it then right lol?

Wallace contract was a bad one..I did say I agree with you on that one but just about every big free agent gets over paid at the start of free agency...the bargains come later.

I think Brando Albert was over paid too, the next LT Monroe got paid like 10 mil less and has more upside than Albert because of his age.

I still am hopeful that Mike Wallace can meet the standards of his current contract. With some more production he will but let's not forget his QB didn't help him that much last year. Sometimes you have to overpay a bit to sign a great player which Mike Wallace is. I still believe in the player and hope he has a great year this message brought to you by a real Miami Dolphin fan.

his QB didn't help him AT ALL last year.
neither did the coaching; turning that guy into a possession receiver did WONDERS, only to have a genius like tom start posting about how awful he was.
for one thing jackson was targeted more, AND he was thrown more long balls his was than wallace was, but of course THOSE annoying facts are nowhere to be found in tommy's review of last year.
wallace was a good soldier last year, (unlike marshall), and worked hard.
as for grimes, it was a brilliant contract.
only an idiot would lock up a 29 year old corner back to a multi-year deal coming off an ACHILLES INJURY.
jesus christ you are a fool..lol

"at the end of the day we'll never really know if running more would have helped Miami. history and common sense say no, but truth is we'll never know."

i haven't been consistently wrong about ANYTHING except my wins prediction which is a crap shoot. mystery quotes, huh?
try googling "running the ball in the NFL" and tell me what other mysteries come your way, tom.
it's what every successful team does; there's really no mystery about it, except for the mystery as to why you cannot understand that simple concept..

There's nothing Mike Wallace could do this season to live up to his contract. He's making as much as Peyton Manning and Aaron Rodgers. More than Tom Brady.

Lol not even close.

david why do you always sound so angry? lighten up. it's only sports.

how many douche bag idiots are on this blog anyway?

Posted by: (the real) david in los angeles | December 28, 2013 at 09:05 PM

one. you can see him in the mirror.

lol, tom.
it means "laugh out loud".
it's what i usually write when responding to accusations of lying, being a SFB, and every other accusation you level after i prove you wrong.
i laugh, tom, i'm not angry. and it IS only sports.
however, supporting a 65% pass to run ratio tells us more about you than you'd like to admit, as does saying the offense we had 2 years ago was the same weapons wise that we had last year, and since a balanced attack didn't work TWO YEARS AGO it wouldn't have worked last year.
THAT, my friend, is a ridiculous argument, perhaps more so than any you've laid out.

Manning: $17,500,000

Rodgers: $17,550,000

Brady: $14,800,000

Wallace: $17,300,000

it's so cute when you post drivel under fake names, tom.
as for the salaries, i never claimed we didn't overpay for wallace; i'm just not calling him your favorite word, a bust.
free agents ARE generally over-paid, and if the next coordinator runs that balanced offense he did last year with philly, and if we throw deep to wallace, say, more than once every other game then his numbers will go up.

big basketball game tonight.
i think, miraculously, we'll suddenly discover how to play defense, wade won't be hurt, and we'll hopefully be one game back from homecourt with 13 games to play, including one more against indiana.
it's pretty remarkable that indiana, who's stated goal was to win homecourt and have done everything in their power to do so, is only a couple games ahead while we've paced ourselves, sat various players, given up on defense and have not tried to do anything but get healthy for the playoffs..

AND, (you'll love this one, FZB!), since we so GROSSLY over paid for wallace, while signing gibson, keller, grimes, patterson and others last year, ireland sure did an amazing job of leaving us so far under the cap for this year despite all those solid signings and "wasted" money.
NFL contracts ARE adjustable and subject to restructuring, and that would include wallace's, if we needed the money, which this year we most likely won't.
apparently, (and correctly), it appears that management is looking towards the draft to fill the rest of the needs on the team, and that is a wise move.

Mr Ross is really laying it on thick now with Pouncey. He s outstanding now and all that.Like I said before the Wells report came out - not much will happen with Pouncey. The Phins know he s a good player.Teams always find ways to sweep ....er I mean keep good players.

pouncey will be fine, i agree.
as for the heat, just heard ray allen is sick and will not be playing; tough break for us, and i hope we'll be ok for this game..

There he goes again. Who called Wallace a bust? Making chit up by the minute....our favorite boolchit dispenser dapper dave.

you HAVE called him a bust, a wasted signing, and many other negative things, but then again, anyone who declares an NFL draft a failure THE DAY AFTER THE DRAFT isn't starting with a full deck anyway..
go heat!

Tom...Like I said Wallace's contract is indeed for a lot of dinero but it was the going rate last year and we needed to bolster the WR position which Ireland did and very well by re signing Hartline and getting Gibson and Keller obviously the injury to Keller was devastating but the silver lining was that Clay emerged into a playmaker.

Like David has stated Ireland has done some good and some bad things (just like every GM) and I get the feeling that next year we will see some major improvement from some of our young players like Jordan, Sims, Taylor etc .. I still don't think much of Philbin but I do like the fact he hired a young offensive coordinator and a veteran well respected offensive line coach, hopefully Hickey understands the importance of fixing the offensive line and does it..

Where I strongly disagree with BB and you is in the running game, I know teams are passing more now but for an offense to be come truly great both the passing and the running game must become dominant ...with emphasis in running the ball...

find where I said Wallace is a "bust". cut it and paste it here and I will donate $100 to the charity of your choice. no strings attached.

FZB whenever you start a sentence "Like David said" the sentence loses any impact. Try again.

Ok...I'll try it again...the Dolphins will not make the playoffs until they make a commitment to run the football on a consistent basis...no way, no how...

There...

Well the Heat are hanging in there against the Pacers ....

On behalf of those of us in Western Canada I'd like to give a mention to the late Ralph Klein, former mayor of Calgary and Premier of Alberta, who once said (referring to Ontario and Quebec): "Let those Eastern Bastards freeze in the dark!"

Cap hit clown laugh it up.

You can clown around and break down yearly salary numbers cap impact etc but bottom line is Mike Wallace will make a maximum of 60 million dollars over the 5 year contract that he signed should he not be released. That averages out to 12 million dollars per year. All of the players you named will make more per season. Don't play the sad clown homey.

There's nothing Mike Wallace could do this season to live up to his contract. He's making as much as Peyton Manning and Aaron Rodgers. More than Tom Brady.

I see Heat just lost.Great, exciting game.Lots of physicality and effort.Heat had plenty of chances to win but Pacers are tough in the paint.Lost any home advantage against them most likely in a seven game series. It s going to be a great Playoff season again as I see both teams are primed.Yeah I know the NY teams may have something to say about the East yet...and to a lesser extent...even Chicago with Noah and how he s earning the defensive MVP award.Anyway....still lots of basketball to be played.

Homey don't play that.

tom, everything i say has been reiterated from journalists to coaches to former players.
stop trying to insult me by suggesting what i say isn't true.
you do not run, you lose, ok?
stop arguing against that, you nitwit.

now the heat..
tough one point loss on the road, ESPECIALLY when wade's 3 point shot is waved off when he was clearly in bounds, but the season isn't over as far as getting home court.
the pacers REALLY hate miami, and it's fun watching them lose their composure and cool, like last year.
home court or not, we will win a 7 game series against this team.

Looks as though the "Bought title" run ends this year. What a soft team.

Negative views of President Obama have hit a new high, according to a poll.

The AP-GfK poll shows 59 percent of Americans now disapprove of Obama -- a point higher than the previous high set in December.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/post-politics/wp/2014/03/26/poll-obamas-disapproval-rating-hits-a-new-high/

WTF are those 41% thinking? Never mind stupid question. They're obviously not capable of rational thought.

On Obi's disapproval rating?... Well chit son..everyone on this blog knew that, well almost everyone.

How 'bout RALLLLPPPPPPPHHHHH Ah, Ah URP...

FZB,right there with ya bro. Sad part of Obama is the people that put him in office, real scary thought of next election. Hilary? Just shoot me please!

A stroll down memory lane...

WHAT'S UP GUYS !

on my boy Philbin, yeah he IS the best head coach we've had around these parts since the master himself ( Shula ) what! ?..yup, including Jimmy Johnson, the JJ we got was nowhere near the same JJ from Dallas.

Posted by: FZB | October 11, 2013 at 01:45 PM

CHIT...did I say that?...man, I must be getting old, I don't even recall saying it..

ok..let's examine what I wrote one more time..

after Shula..

JJ was here for a cup of coffee, did some good things, drafted some good players but his heart wasn't into it and treated Marino like a piece of chit..failure.

Wanny...won a few games with JJ's players but his horrendous skills as a coach and GM did him in..failure

Satan, we where all jumping up and down when we got him but soon we realized he was totally overwhelmed as a pro coach and quit on our team...failure.

Cam Cameron..fail forward, that's all I need to say about that.

Tony "fist pump" Sparano..Parcells hand picked HC, you guys think he is better than clueless Joe?

so yeah, I stand by that statement, clueless Joe is the best coach we've had around here since Shula..but he's still nothing compared to the master.
