"Selection Sunday now done, bracket is set, office pools on ... HAIKU!" --Greg Cote

Haiku prize list revealed: Our 2014 Haiku Challenge winner will receive his or her choice of four prizes: 1. Dolphins 2013 Postseason Guide: Which may or may not be a collector's item, considering the team did not make the postseason. 2. Heat 2013-14 Media Guide: It's 496 pages of champion, baby. 3. Meet-n-greet with Dan Le Batard Show: And chance to sit in-studio with us during a Tuesday segment. 4. Eurythmics 1986 album "Revenge": Vinyl, unopened, mint.

NCAA Tournament betting favorites: Bovada sets the faves as Florida at 11-2, Louisville 13-2, Michigan State 7-1, Arizona 9-1, Kansas/Virginia/Wichita State all 10-1, and Duke 12-1.

MARCH MADNESS HAIKU CHALLENGE: FREE YOUR INNER POET. ENTER CONTEST NOW!: This is the official entry point for our blog's ninth annual March Madness Haiku Challenge. The contest stubbornly 1aa1ahaikuchallengesurvives despite sometimes tepid response owing to too few inspired souls able to see and appreciate the natural marriage of American college basketball mania and Japanese short-form poetry. This a "boutique" contest, meaning its relative unpopularity makes your odds of winning fairly good should you dare to delve. Contest rules? Simple:

1. Haikus must in some way be about the NCAA Tournament or postseason 1aa1ahaikuexample(men or women, Miami-themed or national, serious or funny) and must be in
haiku form, or 17 syllables. Classic 5-7-5 metrical phrasing is preferred but not required, and rhyme-or-no-rhyme is your call, but only entries of exactly 17 syllables will be considered. An example of haiku is shown above.

2. Enter as many times as you like in the Comments section here, but only one entry per comment, please! Haikus must be entered as a comment here in this blogpost to be considered. In the case of similar haikus, favored status goes to first posted.

There will be a prize to be announced soon for the best, most original or inventive haiku. Chances are it will be a crappy prize, with a strong possibility that I'll procrastinate getting it to the winner and perhaps forget altogether. Don't delay because we plan to shut off entries and announce winner in a few days.

Defending 2013 Haiku Challenge champ is OC Dolphin with his winner: "Miami, home of roundball * Heat, second to none * Canes, joining the fun." The judges overlooked a lack of 5-7-5 phrasing, charmed by simplicity and use of the quaint 'roundball.'

Our CHAMPIONS ROLL CALL: 2013--OC Dolphin; 2012--Frydad4; 2011--OC Dolphin; 2010--I Am Kazaam; 2009--r.duke; 2008--Tococane; 2007--Bruce and David Tucker (tie); and 2006--Kurt from Boca.

Now, don't be scared. Have fun. Ready ... set ...haiku!

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

THE LIST: GREATEST PAT/PATRICKS: The Dolphins just sigbned the greatest active Irish name in sports -- Cortland Finnegan -- but in honor of St. Patrick's Day we bring you the top five greatest Pats or Patricks in South Florida pro sports history:

1. Pat Riley, Heat coach/president, 1995-present

2. Patrick Surtain, Dolphins cornerback, 1998-04

3. Pat Rapp, Marlins pitcher, 1993-97

4. Pat Cummings, Heat forward, 1988-90

5. Patrick Cobbs, Dolphins running back, 2006-10

Note: No Panthers made the top five after the Pat Committee rejected the surname Fitzpatrick.

Dolphins latest Super Bowl odds: Bovada has updated odds today reflecting the first week of NFL free agency, and Miami remains 50-1, tied for 23rd of 32 teams. Betting faves are Seahawks at 6-1, Broncos 7-1, 49ers 15-2, Patriots 9-1 and Packers 10-1.

Heat beats Rockets: OK so the sky isn't falling, after all. That was just a metor shower.

Poll result: Strong grades for Dolphins' early free-agent signings: We asked in the previous blogpost, a great response followed, and y'all came in throwing bouquets at new general manager Dennis Hickey. Tha vast majority thought the Dolphins' early FA work was good (57.6 percent) or excellent (30.1%). Another 10.6% called it fair, and only 1.7% thought it poor.

Click back. Will be updating/adding to this latest blogpost...

The Miami Dolphins have been winners so far in NFL free agency. And not the kind of "winner" they were last year, when they threw huge and unnecessary amounts of money at Mike Wallace, Philip Wheeler and Dannell Ellerbe.

This year, they've done things in a much more reasonable way. They've filled their biggest need, re-signed two key players and filled a couple more spots with shrewd deals.

Ireland’s draft picks in 2013 combined to contribute almost nothing on the field this season, punctuated by the head scratching move of trading up to take defensive lineman Dion Joran – a player the team didn’t need and never could figure out how to use – while ignoring the gaping holes in the offensive line. Ireland’s draft picks have routinely gone bust, and his free agent signings have arguably been even worse. Even the lone bright light in his 2013 free agency crop, cornerback Brent Grimes, comes with the asterisk of having only been signed for a single year. That means the team will have to back up a truck full of cash to keep him next year, whereas simply signing him to a multi year contract to begin with would have saved the team millions under the salary cap. - See more at:

i am still amazed that you considered 11 carries for 22 yards against BALT last year "success" running the ball. you sure you don't want to save face and retract that?

So Miami should have run out the clock against BALT? Really? Miami got the ball with 5:25 left on the clock. The score was 23-23. 11 carries for 22 yds before that. you seriously think Miami could keep the ball for 5:25 by running it? Seriously? Really? Are you kidding?

BALT got the ball back and scored a FG with 1:41 left. Miami had plenty of time to score and actually got the ball to BALT 34 yd line. But sadly Miami's Ireland-constructed OL gave up a sack and Sturgis ended up missing a 57 yd FG.

Putin has done it again. Russian forces it way into the Crimea & threatens all of Europe. AP is reporting that in the light of what is going on over there, France has officially surrendered.

i'm not retracting anything, but you've officially gone on the record saying 11 carries a game is enough for your primary running back.
that is an ignorant and grotesquely wrong assumption, and no one who knows anything about football will agree with you.
when all you do is throw, then all teams will do is rush the passer; it's partly why we gave up so many sacks, tom.
11 carries for your running back is nowhere near enough to win.
SOME GAMES will go like that; where passing becomes the primary option, the other team shuts down the run, etc.
but rhythm backs need the carries to get in a groove, the defense needs the time OFF the field, and the offense needs the advantage of the defense NOT KNOWING what we will do every down.
and like i said, it's not just about the yardage, but you refuse to accept that.

earthquake woke me up
"i swear it's ireland's fault!"
i can hear tom now..

i've given you miller's statistics numerous times.
you can look than up. when he got more than 11 carries he averaged 60 yards..
most starting running back average 18-20 carries a game.
miller averaged 11.
lamar miller ranked 27th in carries out of starting running backs.
you can that a good sample size?
when getting MORE than 11 carries, his numbers went up significantly; and you will see them go up next year when a real coordinator uses him the right way.
(isn't it ironic that lazor's running back last year lead the league in attempts and yards?!)
we'll take YOUR retraction whenever you're ready..

God made the Irish number # 1.

We are talking about the Baltimore game. You cited that game is an example of the success of Miami's running game.

WELL?

david Balt game would have been won by Miami the sack was the difference despite running for only 22 yards.

Tom Balt pushed off illegally on that missed fg just another game Miami gets screwed they just called it the week prior also.

well it sure looks like there's not a whole of good offensive linemen left in free agency, I say sign Eric Windston and wait for the draft.

but who knows what the BSB and clueless Joe are up to...and since I don't want Tom and BB upset with me today here's the translation of BSB..hehe

good news guys, if closet fairy/girly man J martin in on San Fran's roster to start the year we are getting a 7th rounder in 2015 !!! yeah boy.

ok Heat fans, the Heat won yesterday, everyone can step off the ledge now..

Russia invades
Obi doesn't care
the madness rules the air.

Call her whatever you want FZ I don't take it personal like you do. Pioli is so great he got an assistant GM job and Farmer leaked his draft board there are no perfect guys like you think there are. It's a process and the one Miami has in place currently is not only working to attract good players it's harmonious a good way to begin a new season.

Woodcock Ron Paul? C'mon guy was senile during the last election cycle I can only imagine what he is saying now why worry.

BB...my point has always been about the way that Ross went about it, Hickey can actually turn into a great GM (which we all hope) but the facts are very, very clear.

Ross elected to protect an average coach and a cap expert over hiring the best possible candidate (s), this GM job was turned down in one way or another by 7 people including minority candidates...

FZ it will always be about you being wrong about Ireland and having a hard on for these other candidates who may or may not be more qualified to run the team. Those facts are very, very clear.

well if that's what you think then you are just as blind as everyone else, the owner of a team has a responsibility to hire the best possible GM for his franchise and to the fans that pay to attend the games and or buy his team's merchandise.

I don't care about Ireland being fired or being wrong about him (which I was) and I don't have a problem with Hickey either but Aponte was part of the problem since she's the one that went behind Ireland's back and formed an alliance with Philbin and Philbin has shown in his two years as a HC that's he is not ready to lead a team..you all can keep saying that Ireland was to blame but our whole coaching staff is not very good and the results speak for themselves, look at the turn over on the offensive side of the ball this year.

if our coaches were so great then why fire the offensive coordinator?.. here's the most telling stat, our team was not ready to play and compete those last two games of the year with the season on the line...and that is the most important criteria that a HC needs to be evaluated on.

i never cited baltimore as a game he ran successfully, i cited the baltimore game as a winnable one had we run more.
as for "successful" running games that we lost?
new orleans, for one.
11 attempts 62 yards 5.6 average. running game abandoned in the 2nd half.

1st buffalo game is a PERFECT example.
9 attempts 43 yards 4.8 average

1st new england game is a perfect example too.
18 attempts 89 yards 4.9 average, run abandoned in the 2nd half.

are we still talking about last season? Cortland Finnegan looks to be our starting CB opposite Grimes here's hoping he reverts back to being the good player he used to be.

not so fast my friend..Jamar Taylor could have something to say about that...

If I were the Dolphins I would sign LeGarret Blount now, we do need a power runner to complement Miller, is obvious that D Thomas is not the answer..

actually, finnegan was brought in to have competition at corner back with jamar taylor and will davis; 2 players hickey has been publicly excited about playing.
not coincidentally, 2 ireland picks last year that ireland was supposedly angry about not playing more..
in addition to the success i think we'll have next year, it will be even MORE fun seeing jordan, taylor, jenkins and hopefully davis flush tom's argument down the toilet that last year's draft was garbage..

He could but he likely won't. They just gave Finnegan 11 million for 2 years. Looks like they have no faith in the Ireland busts Taylor and Davis. I am hoping that at least one can play nickel full time at some point.

Congratulations, OC. You have done a great job of getting the word out on what a welshing rat bastard Greg Cote is on this haiku crap business. As far as I remember this is the least number of participants. Hopefully the thing will die a quite death never to be heard from again.

OOPS read carefully

did you watch the baltimore and carolina games?
those were LAST SECOND LOSSES because we left JUST ENOUGH TIME on the clock for the other team to win. in games we had some SUCCESS running the ball.

Posted by: (the real) david in los angeles | March 15, 2014 at 02:32 PM

So tell us what did you mean by success?

I wouldn't waste a 7th round pick on this guy. Good college quarterback not much NFL potential. Stock's dropping like a rock.

http://www.news-herald.com/sports/20140317/louisville-qb-teddy-bridgewater-unimpressive-in-pro-day-showing

Agree none of the current qb's are a sure thing like our boy Tanny.

Not usually a schadenfreude kind of guy but Jim Irsay? Sort of loving it.

i explained what i meant; you keep misunderstanding me.
again, i'll explain, (as bill polian did, while we were losing to carolina the same way).
when you attempt to run, EVEN WHEN YOU DON'T GET MASSIVE YARDAGE, good things can happen. it keeps the defense rested, keeps the opposing defense guessing what you're doing, and it opens up the passing game.
blatimore ran the ball 40 times against us that game, and only got just above 3 yards a carry.
by your definition, that wasn't a success, but they controlled the clock and the game.
had we run more than the 11 fing times we did the whole game, we would've won.
that i have to keep explaining this to you defies all reason and logic.
you want to call me and bill polian idiots, go right ahead.. lol

"in games we had some SUCCESS running the ball."

seriously dap you have zero credibility

Oh, my word, and some people are grading out the Fish's free agency moves as "excellent."

Let me show you what excellence looks like.

First you sign Revis Island and then you go and pick up Browner. And this is after they picked up LeGarrett Blount last year for a song.

The more things change the more they stay the same.

Oh, the horror.

And we're going to counter that with Fat Albert and Mr. Vanilla.

http://itiswhatitis.weei.com/sports/newengland/football/patriots/2014/03/17/brandon-browner-looking-to-start-his-career-with-patriots-on-good-foot/

Mr. Woodcock,

louisville lost to central florida who were good nenough to win a decent bowl game. what QBs do in front of guys with clipboards and stopwatches don't affect me as seeing guys play against competition, which teddy bridgewater did all season. he wont drop lower the the first few picks of round two, if that late.

A decent bowl game? lol it was the freaking Fiesta Bowl they lost one game barely to South Carolina greatest story in college football last season hands down.

Yup. Sorry, Shad, but now that your alma invited Hanoi Jane to receive an award at the University of South Central your credibility is bouncing along the bottom along with the school's. No sir, that Bridgewater kid has a mountain of historical evidence to overcome, much better to go with a vanilla prototype like Tannehill.

A buzzer beater.
Time stands still. The clock runs out.
Cinderella Wins!

"in games we had some SUCCESS running the ball."

seriously dap you have zero credibility - tom

dude, are you REALLY arguing with me and bill polian, AND our current coach on this?
lamar put up 89 yards against the patriots, almost all in the 1st half and that's not successful?
they pretty much ignore him in the 2nd half and we lose by 10.. you do the math..

new orleans game.. 11 carries 62 yards, and then ignored in the 2nd half.. LOSS

buffalo #1 9 carries for 43 yards in a loss. that's a 4.8 average with only 9 carries. LOSS

i, and bill polian, have ALL THE CREDIBILITY IN THE WORLD on this issue, and you philbin actually does, too.
want to know why?
the "amazing coordinator" you think was somehow "hampered" by the GM is looking for a job now; THAT'S how good he was.
and he was replaced by a guy who ran a balanced offense, a guy who's running back last year LED THE LEAGUE in carries..
tom, stop arguing with me; you already lost and don't even know it..

Madness flies away
And March is gone with the wind
When Hurricanes blow.

Bill Polian said the Dolphins had success running against Baltimore? Provide the link. I can't wait.

according to bill polian, teams need to commit to running the ball in games even when they're not getting much yardage.
he was explaining this during the 710 espn radio broadcast of the dolphin panther game.

according to polian, committing to running, EVEN WHEN YOU AREN'T GETTING THE YARDS does a few things:

-keeps the opposing defense guessing
-keeps the element of surprise in your pay calling
-shortens the game by running time off the clock
-keeps your defense off the field, and rested for the end of the game.

you keep misunderstanding what i said; we had NINE rushing attempts in the baltimore game.
that is what killed us.
it's not a coincidence that our defense was walked over at the end of many of these games; we had no balanced attack, and we threw the ball too much. if you couldn't see that watching these games then you should pick another sport to follow, because you do not get this one.
NINE RUSHING ATTEMPTS PER GAME = A LOSS.
40 pass attempts to 9 rushing attempts is insanity.
your star running back only averaging 10 carries a game is a recipe for disaster, and it explains many of our failures last year..
