Thursday p.m.: Do you support Dolphins coach Joe Philbin? Poll. Vote now!; plus bringing Marino back, 'Melo-to-Heat scenario, Nevin & more

I'll be on ESPN's Outside The Lines (via phone) today some time between 3-3:30 p.m. to discuss the Dolphins.

1) It is THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 20. Dolphins late last night fired offensive line coach Jim "Blowup Doll" Turner, as expected, a fallout of the Bullygate scandal. Longtime trainer Kevin O'Neill also was let go. 2) In The Previous Blogpost (ITPB): D-Wade's cool gift, SI swimsuit issue, FIU's baseball error, Heat trade rumor, NBA All-Star Game, Mavis Staples & more. 3) Follow us on Twitter @gregcote and also on Instagram, Vine and Facebook.

The Marino column: Today's latest column by me -- click Bring Marino Home to read -- makes the case why the Dolphins should explore bringing Dan Marino into the front office in a "frontman" role similar to what John Elway plays in Denver.

THE GREAT DIVIDE ON JOE PHILBIN: There are two great disconnects in this whole Dolphins Bullygate issue. One is that the NFL/Ted Wells report found Jonathan Martin (and two others) to be the victim of 1aa1ajoepharrassment, and yet Dolphins players -- the men in that lockerroom -- side instead with Richie Incognito (and two others) who did the harrassing. The second big disconnect is that the Wells report essentially found coach Joe Philbin not guilty here, and if anything praised his forthright response to the scandal. And yet many in the media would hold Philbin responsible and figuratively lynch the man. Mostly these are national media folk who have never set foot in the Miami lockerroom, but some of the wanna-be-GMs are local, too. What's funny here is that Philbin, even with the Bullygate matter, would have gotten coach of the year votes and universal media praise had Miami made the playoffs, which seemed likely until the final two games. Instead, it's an hysterical piling on. I wonder how you feel? How fans feel? Do you support Philbin at least for now either because you think he's a the right coach or because he's being unfairly savaged for Bullygate? Or do you not support him because of either factor? Take a dip in our poll and say why.

THE 'MELO-TO-HEAT SCENARIO: I cannot take the credit for this if it interests you, or the blame if you find it too ludicrous to even consider. Credit or blame Steve Kyler, of basketballinsiders.com, who 1aa1ameloheatcrunched salary-cap numbers and concluded this week that the Heat could re-sign LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh this coming summer and add Knicks free agent Carmelo Anthony to form a fearsome BIg 4 ... if all four agreed to accept significant pay cuts to $14 million each. Likely to happen? Of course not! Plausible? Well ... perhaps. Remember that James, Wade and Bosh each sacrificed financially to make the whole Big 3 thing happen in 2010, although this would require an even greater hit. It is tantalizing to consider even as everything in your gut says, "no way." A scarier possibility for Heat fans: Miami targets 'Melo to replace LeBron if James leaves.

OOPS. NEVIN DROPPED ME AGAIN: My email inbox yesterday -- daily a weird, varied thing that I mean to share with y'all in a future blogpost -- includes this from the federal prison system: "The above-named inmate [Nevin Shapiro] has chosen to remove your email address from his/her approved contact list and, therefore, can not receive or send messages to your email address." Nevin and I have developed an on/off/on/off penpalship. Not sure why he has dropped me again, or why now, but you came imagine how crestfallen I am! Updates as needed.

Click back. Will be updating/adding to this latest blogpost...

Greg Cote is the only media member in the country who doesn't think Philbin did a poor job.

The problem is the media only sees that bullygate happened on his watch not that they overcame it to make a playoff run. No one in the media talks about the fact that he didn't want Incognito on the team either they leave that little nugget out because it's easier to just make noise and shout on tv or internet/ radio not actually do homework.

Philbin needs to be fired because he andhis staff are all incompetent

Much like many of us here contend that judging Tannehill - as of today - based on what he's done or hasn't done, in spite of the putrid, disruptive, talentless OL he was forced to work with is similar to holding judgement on Philbin and the lack of help, if not outright undermining that Jeff Ireland provided him.

Bring this argument up if The Dolphins fall under .500 come Halloween 014.

BB..I used to support Philbin but I totally lost confidence in him as a HC after he failed miserable to have his team ready to play in the last two games of the year.

and Cote... the Heat don't need or want Melo..

Not surprised that most fans do not support Philbin. In life it's all about "What have you done for me lately." Philbin's job is one of the easiest jobs in the world to quantify as successful or not, it's all about the Ws. In his case too many Ls and not enough Ws makes "Tribilin Philbin" a loser.

Next!

You're passing the buck and making excuses, buddy. This is not college football where Alabama just reloads every year. In the pros the talent difference between the first place team and the last place team is not that great which is why you see such turnarounds and parity in the pro game. As I've said before, "Management is everything in life." Right now the Dolphins are a poorly managed administration and that's not going to change any time soon.

My last message was directed at you, OC.

I'm not "most fans," Woods. In fact, I'm not "most anything." You of all people should know that I do not follow the herd.

Now go ahead and follow the Pied Piper. He's blowing a nice little ditty.

Melo is a B-E-A-S-T. NBA trade deadline coming soon there will be some major news happening this year I think. Look for C's to target Kevin Love and Russell Westbrook with Rondo likely gone in a trade.

I think the Heat should trade Udonis Haslem to Minnesota for Kevin Love, yup, I think that's a fair trade for both teams.

Philbin getting no love I will give him the benefit of the doubt for now more focused on personnel for the upcoming season.

With all but one of the major NBA/media markets experiencing crappy teams, I suspect ratings are now lower, even more than Obama's numbers.

Blow on this, OC.

In all fairness, there's no way Philbin could have known that Jon Martin was a psychopath, he did kind of screw over Incognito but he really didn't have a choice with the media pressure. Hopefully he'll do the right thing and bring Incognito back now that the public has seen the report showing that he did nothing wrong.

Top show on cable last week: AMC's "Walking Dead" (13.3M viewers). Next two: TNT's NBA All-Star Game (7.5M) and All-Star Sat Night (5.7M).

Regardless of whether or not the Martin/Igognito fiasco occurred, Philbin is a very poor head coach. The only reason that he is here is that no competent coach wanted the job because of Ross, Ireland, and Dawn. He is way over his head.

Oye OC...Philbin es un pedazo de mierda (translation for my gringo amigos)..Philbin is a piece of chit.

on a more serious note, I wonder who Philbin and Aponte are going to draft with our number one..it better be an offensive lineman, I wouldn't mind the tackle from ND, that guy is a player.

Sidenote Incognito wasn't on many teams draft boards coming out of college he was kicked out of two. The Rams took a chance and got burned after he averaged 1 personal foul penalty per game. They said buh bye then Buffalo took him and they quickly said no thanks. I am sensing a pattern here try and keep up folks he also had a meeting with Goodell according to Wells report. I guess being named the NFL's dirtiest player isn't always a good thing for a team but we bought it hook line and sinker some of you people that see Richie as a victim are just too much. Richie to Martin on twitter this week sorry bro things just got cra cray. No Richard It's Richie who is the psycho the report concluded that Jonathan Martin was victimized please re-read the report.

BB, the problem here is perspective. No one feels bad for Goliath, my man.

I guess the reason our offensive line coach (Turner) has not been canned just yet is because the NFL will probably suspend him..

He should be canned not for anything that he did but for what his O line failed to do last year.....

I truly believe that Jonathan Martin may have been able to have a successful NFL career if given the right environment and support in that locker room. He never had a chance and that is too bad for him his actions were just a function of him trying to fit in poor guy was beaten to a pulp emotionally I have a complete understanding of why he left the team. This may be my Counseling background talking but I also played football growing up so I can see it from both sides.

BB..Incognito DID apologize to closet fairy Martin already via twitter, isn't that enough?..I would say it is.

Well someone here's a Celtics fan Westbrook or Love for Rondo?! There best offer so far is Isaiah Thomas Jr. and Ben McLemore for Rondo. Miami is going to have to make some tough decisions this offseason but if Wade and Bosh don't opt out then it's going to be a pretty attractive spot for LBJ or Carmelo Anthony. Enough about Nevin Shapiro too the Hurricanes are irrelevant and this chump even less so!

BB, take a look at the Nielsens, here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Basketball_Association_Nielsen_ratings

As I mentioned a few weeks back, the NBA has failed to generate the kind of viewership it enjoyed under Magic, Bird, and Jordan. Numbers are numbers.

Yea, that's the same for any TV show, buddy. Back when Magic, Bird, and Jordan were playing you didn't have 24 hour internet service and a plethora of devices bringing you information and entertainment 24/7. Get real. The only reason that you're carping about this is that your Lakers suck donkey dicks and YOU'RE not watching.

So obvious, son. "The emperor has no clothes."

"There are lies, damn lies, and statistics."

Mark Twain

No not Love for Rondo. Love could be more easily obtained through offering draft picks and players such as B. Bass, J. Green, or Jared Sullinger. Westbrook for Rondo though sure why not could involve other players or picks but not a complete joke at all.

FZB, concerning the Salguero article and substance of his article, I would say this about that.

If i were Philbin, I would make sure to bring along Incognito to the podium for that Thursday presser. Then, when Armando asked his silly little weasel questions, I would let the leash off Richie to watch him run over to Armando's face and berate him with: WHAT THE F*** IS WRONG WITH YOU? YOU PIECE OF S***!!!! GO CLIMB INTO YOUR F&&&ING BANANA BOAT AND GET THE F^^^ OUT OF HERE!!!!!!!!

Woody..OC is not taking the Lakers demise very well, he's still upset that Howard turned them down..hehe

You're wrong Woodsoft. The Lakers won back-to-back-to-back in 2000,01,02 with Kobe and Shaq and their ratings were not nearly as good as two years prior, when Jordan was killing the Jazz.

FZ, as usual, you're wrong.

Philbin getting destroyed by voters oh my no love for The Pilgrim.

I'm wrong as usual?...mmmm, I'm not wrong about about Philbin or our clueless owner.

Sure, sure, OC you're absolutely sure about 1 rating point today being the equivalent of 1 rating point 25 years ago........

Wow, what a nerd.

Philbin wanted to cut Richie after the golf issue and wanted to keep Long. If they had done things his way none of this would have been an issue and they probably would have made the playoffs

Oye, FZ, this is now twice in a week that OC sides with that fish Cote. First on the All Star game and now on Tribilin. Talk about hitching your wagon to an old beaten down mule......

Hey, getting rid of Long was one of the good things that this team did in the off season. The Rams couldn't run away from an iceberg this past season and Long broke down and did not finish the season again.

When the dirtbag conman Sharpiro thinks he can use you again to his advantage he will make contact. Until then you can always take ambien to get to sleep.

Posted by: Tom | February 19, 2014 at 02:35 PM

This is not me.

Richie was not the issue, Jonathan Martin was the issue. But I can understand Philbin wanting to keep Long. At least he is a proven LT who when healthy can do the job at a fairly high level.

Truth is if the Dolphins had kept Long or signed Albert, Martin would have stayed at RT and none of that chit would have happened. Martin melted down because he lost his job at LT, a job by the way he should never have had. And who is to blame for that nugget of lunacy? Well it ain't Philbin!

Jake Long started 15 games and was ranked by PFF as the #2 tackle in football behind Joe Thomas at the time.

well if I recalled correctly the Dolphins offered Jake Long a very good contract but not the guarantee money he was looking for so he left, it was not the Dolphins fault.

you guys assumed it was Ireland's fault he left but sometimes players DO LEAVE on their own and is not the teams fault, I also recalled most of us where in agreement let it him walk because of the injuries..

You're wrong FZ Martin was the victim in Bullygate. When you call him a fairy it just makes you look stupid and insecure besides the fact that you are an admitted homophobe. Your comments regarding Bullygate are not worth a crap ever.

That fairy would still squash you like a bug.

gezz Baby, you're this upset about me calling someone a fairy?..damn son..I'm sure glad I didn't call him a fag, which is what he is (not that there is anything wrong with it)..hehe.

Martin is a pussy, he didn't stand up for himself, all 6-5 and 320 lbs of him...

My problem with Martin, BB is that he quit on the team. I think that's precisely the problem. Had he brought all this up in a news conference with his lawyer, parents, pastor, or his pet parrot Polly and stated what was going on and returned to the team a lot of the players might have stood behind him. When he quit that was it for him. Look at what happened in Philly with that white boy receiver during the pre season. He was ripped by everyone but he stayed on the team worked hard and actually had a very good season for the Eagles. You've said that you played football so you know that there's nothing worse in team sports than someone quitting on his teammates.

Guess there is no reasoning with you two you come from the old school but this kid was broken emotionally as a result of being harrassed. If he didn't leave the team he would likely have killed himself. This isn't a case of some guy using the n word or being soft sorry guys you have missed the boat and the train has left the station as well.

FIRE FUDD!

Memo, to BB: Download the Godfather and replay the scene over and over with Johnny Fontaine and Don Vito Corleone.

"You can start acting like a man!"

Yeah mobsters a good moral compass to follow I'll get right on that.

FZB it was Ireland's fault he did not either resign Long or replace him with an NFL quality LT.

And Big Baby is right you are a major homophobe FZB. You need to lighten up on gays. The fact that Martin is a pussy and a suckass OL has nothing to do with his sexual orientation. Fat John Jerry sucks too and you never question his sexual orientation.

And Big Baby Woodcock is right about Martin. The issue with Martin is that he walked out on his team. Big time weak ass quitter.

stop it BB..the man is a COWARD, plain and simple and a quitter..enough said.

fat John Jerry never quit, big difference..

so I can't call suspected fairies fag's now?..man, you guys are too strict.

I'll place you into the old school, missed the boat train has left the station category too Tom. Who on that team should he have felt any loyalty to? No one looked out for him.

My high school team had more than 52 players on it. Do you think that I knew everything that was going on outside of the defense? Not a chance.

The problem is not Philbin. The problem is Ross. Ross hired Philbin. Ross can't make an executive decision to save his life. He forms a committee to determine which hand to wipe with.

Writing on the wall dept.

Jim Tuner not a part of coaching staff at NFL combine.

Yeah, saw that on Twitter (note to Mr Woodgeezer, that's where news breaks).

BB..take a looksie at what you wrote here..specially your last sentence..

I'll place you into the old school, missed the boat train has left the station category too Tom. Who on that team should he have felt any loyalty to? No one looked out for him.

Posted by: Big Baby | February 19, 2014 at 04:21 PM

NO ONE WAS SUPPOSED TO LOOK OUT FOR HIM AND PROTECT HIM, he was supposed to do that himself, he is a coward...if he would have said to Incognito, stop this chit now or I'm going to smash your brains in all of it would have stopped.

Tesla up 17% after hours after earnings report crushed estimates......Apple or Google should buy Tesla.

I wouldn't know Twitter from a Toti, OC but I own their stock......

Woodcock, you may be partying without a condom.
Every indicator is screaming to get out of the market. My advise is to sell, sell, sell, Mortimer!

I just have enough to wet my beak.....

Mr.Woodcock,

thanx for the 2013 (non)rundown on jake long; i used to delight in ragging on his inability to block, for either running or passing plays, and the rams got a stiff. jeff fisher being the great coach that he is couldn't even squeeze anything out of #77, not one of the wolverines' great offensive linemen, and they had many. maddog, RIP, thought mike kenn of the falcons was UM's best contribution to the pros, but playing for the falcons did not help promote his ability. michigan and USC are the big boys in getting top flight blockers to the NFL.

I don't know, Shad, according to this fish "Cual" he was the second ranked tackle in the league. He must have fotos of the entire rankings committee in a motel with a heard of Tijuana spray painted Zebra like burros 'cause I certainly didn't see that he was ever all that when he played for the Dolphins. But then I don't know jack about football but based on wins and losses as a barometer to measure his contributions to the team he certainly wouldn't break the top ten at the position.

No you guys are right, jake Long is damaged goods and has been for a while now...

Tannehill is probably wondering if he's going to be breaking his own getting sacked record in 014. Why? Because the team will probably field five new linemen who would have never played together before.

The Dolphins are as dead to me as Fredo. As dead to me as Roth's Sicilian messenger boy Johnny Ola. As dead to me Hymen Roth. As dead to me as all the other heads of the five families. As dead to me as Moe Green. As dead to me as Frank Pentangeli. As dead to me Emilio Rebenga. As dead to me as Frank Lopez and Mel Bernstein. As dead to me as Omar Suarez. As dead to me as Gina and Manulo. As dead to me.. Well you get the picture...

ireland tried signing long, but not at the expense of bankrupting the team.
he also signed, clabo, keller, drafed martin, pouncey and thomas, AND signed mckinnie as well.
the line wasn't ignored; they just did not perform, which is what happens lately when we bring in talent, AND when it goes out.
and, to quote tommy boy, "that ain't on" ireland.
STOP BLAMING IRELAND FOR EVERYTHING. YOU SOUND LIKE IDIOTS.
there was a serious disconnect between management and coaching, and both sides share blame, and the owner is ULTIMATELY the one responsible.
as for martin, while i am certain the culture in the locker room didn't help, the fact is this man was never "in it to win it".
he was never 100% committed to even PLAYING football, as the report suggested with his pros and cons list.
the fact is, he ain't that talented and THAT messed him up more than anything.

if they decide to even the ratio between running and passing, then tannehill won't get sacked as much, PERIOD.
why is it so difficult for you guys, supposed lovers and "experts" at football, to see that running the ball less than brady, manning, brees and wilson was the dumbest move last year?
when miller got more than 10 carries a game he got at least 60 yards.
platooning that position, never committing to it, dropping back in the gun WITHOUT a running back, never rolling out, never taking advantage of tannehill's speed, etc.. ALL OF THAT is on the coaching, SOLELY..

Absolutely in over his head. Cam Cameron 2.0. Does not have a clue how to control an NFL locker room, and to date has displayed zero leadership qualities. Clock keeps ticking, and he refuses to face the media, or even make a simple statement regarding the findings in the Wells report. The only person completely oblivious to his extremely obvious shortcomings as an NFL head coach is the buffoon owner and New York resident Stephen Ross.

That was Sherman's philosophy, david. A new OC brings a new approach, but they then need an upgrade at the RB position. Either way, it doesn't seem that important. The offense, that is. Not after witnessing what Seattle's D did to the #1 offense.

Redskins announced they'd take a 2nd for Kirk Cousins.
A more accurate Tannehill will leadership skills.

Ok ...If I were GM this is what I would do....

Sign Brando Albert as a free agent
Sign a veteran guard that is not too expensive
Draft the kid from ND who can play both guard and tackle
And draft another tackle in the third or fourth round ( Seantrel Henderson? )

That line would make my toes tingle.

Resign Soliai ....

Resign Grimes

Little rumor I heard today...my former son Ireland may be headed to the Texans...

If Hickey doesn't get him and Belicheat and Kraft do, you almost want to think conspiracy. But man, did bully-gate screw everything up.
As much as I like the gesture, giving 23k to BT Washington for rings hardly puts a dent in the Fins negative public perception quotient.

FZB, as a Cane fan and grad, Henderson will be another McKinnie. His history is just too checkered. There is NO one on the Dolphins to guide him. Other than Garner, apparently.
Seantrel was suspended twice, and it could have been more had Golden not looked the other way.

And IMA....Tannehill is our franchise QB...no one and I mean no one would have looked good behind that atrocious offensive line.

No way I would give up a second rounder for Cousins....

Wow FZ, Texans must be d: mentally ill, mentally disordered, of unsound mind, certifiable; Morepsychotic, schizophrenic; mad, deranged, demented, out of one's mind, non compos mentis, unhinged, unbalanced, unstable, disturbed, crazed; informalcrazy, (stark) raving mad, not all there, bushed, bonkers, cracked, psycho, batty, cuckoo, loony, loopy, loco, nuts, screwy, bananas, crackers, wacko, off one's rocker, out of one's tree, around the bend, mad as a hatter, buggy; vulgar slangbatshit

Yes to Soliai, Grimes and Patterson, the latter at a reduced rate.

FZBV, our 2nd round picks have been crap, and Cousins is better than Matt Moore, whom we can get at least a 3rd rounder for. Did you not watch Cousins play, WHEN the Redskins, whose line was nearly as bad as the the Fins played well?
Moore is a turnover machine. You are always defending Ireland's picks, Tanny included. What has he proven so far?
He needs competition. If his head is on straight, he'll step up and play well. If not, he doesn't deserve to start.

To support my point as regards Tanny and his O-Line, Aaron Rogers played behind horrible O-Lines, got sacked 40+ times, had no running game, and yet had pro bowl seasons.
Talent still counts, and anyone who thinks Tanny's raw ability is even 60% of Rogers isn't thinking straight.

FZB, so you know, I in NO WAY mean to sound as mean as my postings. Especially to you, whose postings are always interesting.

So, TARTAGLIA you just leave alone?
Michael, that lovely Italian wife you had for about a week softened you up.

No IMAWriter, the Dolphins are as dead to me as Bruno Tartaglia too...

Oh yeah, the Dolphins are as dead to me as my lovely albeit dead Italian wife too...

Times like these you ALMOST miss the earnestness, if not the incompetence of Tony Sporano. Did I actually say that?
The media liked Sporano, especially after Ross and Ireland pulled their attempted double cross.
Or maybe it was pity.

Posted by: IMAWriter | February 19, 2014 at 07:14 PM

So Henderson will be a champion, pro bowler, and an 11 year starter in the league?

Ima...much love to you brother, You are one of the good ones..

And Dukito...on my former son?... I get your point.

Seantrel Henderson? He couldn't even start for the Hurricanes......

Yeah and we all know how useful pity is...

Here you go boys the inquisition has begun and who falls on the sword first? Yup the head trainer who has been at the job for 18 years and is only one of five trainers to receive the prestigious Tim Kerrin Excellence in Training Award which he received 8 MONTHS AGO!

Sure, sure this guy's one of the best trainers in the business but we can't have a guy going around making Chink jokes.......

Wow, and we sink further and further into the muck.

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/dolphins-fire-trainer-implicated-bullying-010440191--nfl.html

Time to face the music. Philbin is a failure and will never be a head coach in the NFL again ala Cameron and Sparano. Marino should not come back to the Dolphins in any capacity. Total washed up has been.

hey roid, baby just likes to play the contrarian. he's still upset the celtics have faded back to nothingness; he was positive they'd be around competing with miami, never realizing we'd beat them so bad they'd ship everyone off and start over..
i mean, what other type of guy would call the 5 years in a row all defensive 1st team player an "adequate defender"?
perhaps the same type of guy who is "shocked" to find "bullying" in the locker room, as well as gambling in this establishment..

Well Turner has been fired as expected ...our Clueless owner says he's going to talk to that pussy Martin ( probably to beg him to come back to the team) and Philbin still has no clue about anything.

Philbin be nothing more than another coach that has gone bust since Shula. We need a strong leader with presence. Not an uncle fester type who is more boring than watching a banana ripen.

fire Philbin- hire Dan Quinn

Dolphins shouldn't hire Marino. The should hire Jimmy Buffet. Get a damn good "Dolphins Fins Up!" singer and a public relations coup with one rock as it were. Or maybe P. Diddy. Yeah that's the ticket, the winning formula, the opiate of the masses...

Don Michael Corleone,

Don't forget Salatzo and Capt McClusky. That last plate of pasta was a real killer. And lastly, Carlo Rizzi. Stupid to believe his only punishment was to be kicked out of the family business. Would you ride in a car with Clemeza sitting right behin you?

I support Philbin
