Smirk IV and SB pick. Broncos win! (Sorry, Denver); plus Martin vs. Incognito The Poll (vote now) & more

1) It is FRIDAY, JANUARY 31. I'm up at Random Evidence Laboratories today birthing the latest Sunday notes-column package. 2) In The Previous Blogpost (ITPB): Jonathan Martin and Richie Incognito please shut up, Smirk III (the dopest Super Bowl of all), SB who-you-hope-wins poll, Heat about June & more. 3) Follow us on Twitter @gregcote and also on Instagram, Vine and Facebook.

1aa1aleatherSMIRK IV: WEEKEND MEANS SUPER BOWL PARTYING (AND A GAME, TIME PERMITTING): Today's fourth of five daily Super Bowl With a Smirk notes columns delves into the major parties 1aa1abermanassociated with Super Bowl Week, including the annual ESPN party at which a lurching, leering, perspiring Chris Berman inadvertantly drips sweat into other peoples' cocktails while falling over backbackbackbackbackward. Also included in today's new Smirk: Bruno Mars, Eli the orangutan, seasick Broncos, fake stuff, Peyton's ducks, God and ancient trophy-makers. Click on Smirk IV for the complete latest column. (Previously: Smirk IIISmirk IISmirk ISB Top 10 Storylines).

OFFICIAL SUPER BOWL PICK: BRONCOS, 24-20: Well, this is it. Based on the miserable season I've had 1aa1fripixwith my NFL picks, the hope of Seahawks fans is hereby fortified as Broncos fans dash for the Pepto Bismol. (Is Pepto Bismol even still a product?) There are reasons to like the slight-underdog Seahawks. One is that in previous No. 1 offense vs. No. 1 defense Super Bowls, the D-teams are 4-1. Another is Peyton Manning's spotty track record in cold weather. Nevertheless sometimes you go with your gut feeling and I think this is Peyton's year. His season. His Sunday. Click on Super Bowl Gem for the full predix capsule.

Poll result: Most want Broncos to win: In the last blogpost we asked not for a prediction but who you want to win Sunday, and 66.0 percent said Denver. That's less than the 72.4% who previously predicted Denver would win.

WHERE DOES YOUR SYMPATHY GO IN THE DOLPHINS' MARTIN-INCOGNITO BULLYGATE MESS?: The 1aa1abullywhole thing reared its homely head again this week as alleged victim Jonathan Martin did a TV interview and alleged bully Richie Incognito's lawyer fired back with stuff damning to Martin. I find it funny that both men are now publicly playing the sympathy card and that neither man -- at least to me -- is sympathetic. You may feel differently. We did three different Bullygate-related polls back in the fall when it was a national story but this is the first that essentially is One vs. Other. Take a dip in our poll and say why.

Click back. Will be updating/adding to this latest blogpost...

Defense looked bad, as expected. FAU dominated in time of possession, and more from sh*tty bend-but-d'ono't-break defense than Miami hitting quick scores.
Gilbert and Muhammad looked good, Figueroa looked awesome.
Liked Gus Edwards, he got turned back again and again on a goal-line stand but he's a tough runner, he can compliment Duke Johnson, who made 186 yards rushing look routine.
Miami got out of the game relatively healthy, Scott's shoulder looked bad but WR is UM's deepest position.

Miami (Perryman/Coley) left huge plays on the field tonight but you'd almost rather have that going into this week's practices and preparation.

It's impossible to grade an 8 person draft, that league is 100% luck, whoever's superstars happen to do better will win each week.

My last two posts.

Farewell my friends. Travel safely. I'll see you on the other side.

Jimbo, whatever offer you get make sure you don't accept any from El Paso. That place is the scrotum of America.

Martin is a total pussiano, he didn't stand up for himself as a man..now Incognito did crossed the line with the personal insults but he got the worst of it because of all the bad publicity he had to endured.

they just need to both go away..now.

The whole mess could have been avoided if Philbin was allowed to release Richie in the off season like he wanted to. For that I blame one Jeff Ireland. Guessing Philbin didn't really like J. Martin all that much either. Every team needs a player like Richie he just crossed the line unfortunately still like what he brings to a team that edge and toughness is difficult to replace.

The selection by former GM Jeff Ireland of Martin and Incognito two mentally troubled troublemakers is why I am glad Ireland is gone.My hope is that new GM Dennis Hickey will do a better job of research of free agents and draft choices than Ireland when he signed or drafted these two clowns.

I haven't watch a single minute of the SB hype and I don't think I will, I'll just go and turn my 42 inch plasma TV at 6:30 and enjoy the game..

FZ, who do you like winning the SB? Looks like both Greg Cote and Jimbo like Denver. I'm going to wait until Woodcock officially declares who he likes before I then pick the opposite. It's like money in the bank!

in every big game is always better to go with whichever team has the best QB..I'm going with Manning.

but waiting for the Wood's-Ter to pick is not a bad idea either..good thinking.

he's probably going to pick Denver since he hates Carroll.

I like to pay attention to who Marino thinks will win and he says Denver. I would have to agree however I think it will be close. To me Percy Harvin is the x factor if he has a good game Seattle has a chance if not they won't. It's going to be 45 degrees talk about the NFL getting lucky. Problem now is that it will now happen again weather should not influence the outcome of a Superbowl ever really surprised they promote this crap idea.

I believe Pete Carroll could become the third coach to win a SB and National Championship he would follow Jimmy Johnson and Barry Switzer.

Russell Wilson while a good young QB is no Payton Manning , he greatly benefits from having a great running game and and even better defense..the key will be the Broncos offensive line (like always), if Seattle can't get to Manning with their front four they are in big trouble.

a couple of other points, Seattle sometimes struggles away from home and the waether won't as bad as everyone was predicting...so..there it is.

Broncos 23- Seattle 19

Jonathan Martin is a slug. Good riddance. Richie is not the nicest guy but he got a raw deal. There are hundreds of Richie's in the NFL.

I'll be rooting for Denver but I am more hoping for an exciting game. A last second win or even OT would be great.

Peyton Manning isn't even Payton Manning he is the Duck Dynasty guy now.

My son is a huge Seahawks fan he wore his Russell Wilson jersey to school today. He said today if Seattle loses he might cry and he seemed serious even at 11 years old. I have to root for Seattle (despite Richard Sherman being on the team) don't want to see the little guy upset.

you're excuse on that one BB..

I just wanna see a good game also..like Tom says, overtime wouldn't be too bad..

Woody real NFL football may be coming your way soon...

ST. LOUIS –- NFL commissioner Roger Goodell confirmed Friday that St. Louis Rams owner Stan Kroenke informed the league of a recent purchase of a 60-acre tract of land in Inglewood, Calif.

http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/nfl/story/_/id/10380150/st-louis-rams-owner-stan-kroenke-buys-60-acres-land-los-angeles

Now it all may be leverage to get St Louis to kick up the $800 million needed to update their stadium, but you never know.

Woody has the Trojans he doesn't need anything more than that lol.

yeah,yeah..he loves SC..

ok kids, draft talk ...My NFL amigo told me the Dolphins should target this WR in the first round.

BLUE OYSTER CULT!!!!!

Got any tickets to Blue Oyster Cult?

Oye, OC, I think that snow is affecting your brain. I already told you here that I think Seattle will win although of course I'm rooting for Peyton.

Wow, what a nerd.

Wide receivers in the first round are usually horrendous decisions.

Julio Jones and Irving Fryar come to mind C. Patterson looks like he will be worth it minny took him late first round last season. I think if a guy is perceived to be can't miss then take him besides QB it's now the most impactful position on the field.

Megatron is pretty good.

OC..the low in Austin for SB sunday is 34...and 71 in the 305.

so, what are you waiting for?...dale, come on down.

For every megatron there's a Keyshawn Johnson, a legend in his own mind.

Take a look what Gordon did for the Brownies this year with, shall we say, some of the worst quarterbacking in the league.

OC, what are the plans for Sunday during Super Bowl, a foreign movie or shopping at Lane Bryant? He he......

Maybe you can take a blanket and a picnic box and some Arctic type heavy duty "abrigos" and go see the bats fly off that famous bridge......

Current weather:
Miami 79, Austin 77, LA 61

OC...I bet you don't see half naked women running around Austin like they do here...

No, but there are many fully inked up, spikes driven through their eyebrows and hair under their arms...real cuties!

Did I mention purple hair?

Keyshawn Johnson had a very good career.

OC I heard that Austin is a very liberal place you must stick out like a sore thumb. Oh well at least the rest of the state is Republican.

Anti, you get to look through the telescopes at those observatories? Man, that has to be the bomb.

Posted by: Mr. Woodcock | January 30, 2014 at 11:09 PM

Cock. It's all done through computers now my friend, Though I do have a 16 inch Meade Telescope at home I use now and then......
And my Field of expertise is GRBs, Or Gamma ray bursts, Only seen 2 happen while watching but to know any planet in it's path within 5 light years would be vaporize by its radiation is pretty neat.......
Ok for the prediction....
Broncos 24
Seahawks 16

BB, you are well informed. Austin is in fact highly liberal. Key to it all I find, is having UT central to its mix. And as old wisdom points out, when we are young, we tend to be far more idealistic in our reasoning.

Second to that energy, is the fact that (and perhaps youth too has something to do with it) Austin tends to collect "individuals" who exsude free thinking. Few are the folks who fit the cookie-cutter mold.

What I find is a more akin to Libertarianism, i.e., Rand Paul, that American sensibility of letting me live the way I wish regardless of what others think or judge, and i trust y'all will not criticize.

I suspect the manner by which all of this finds acceptance and becomes part of the fabric is in large part due to Texan tradition. It is everpresent in every aspect of life. People ALWAYS address you with a "yes sir! Or mam," and are always most respectfull.

Social liberals / fiscally responsible...for the most part.

Anti....U sure you can't re direct one of those Gamma Ray's little tiniest particles in Obi's direction?....that should do the trick.

Oye OC...that little rant you just made sounded like maybe you are a closet liberal, repent bro.

And there is no such thing as a "fiscally responsible liberal"...sorry amigo..I haven't seen one in my lifetime.

Pete carol was the coach of the NJ jets during a game with the Dolphins and Pete Stoyanovich missed a field goal. After that, Petey starts running up and down the sideline joyfully giving the choke signal. I hope the seahawk's bus crashes off a bridge and drowns the team. Especially classless Petey

Lets put this out there. Fins dump both Incognito (PR move + contract is up) and Martin (hates his job + gets 2 years full severance pay) this offseason. Which one will end up on an NFL roster? My $ says Martin won't, Ritchie will. Teams will avoid both former Dolphins but Ritchie will be offered a job by some team that suffers the injury bug, needing a guy who can start at both G positions.

Wallace, Hartline, Gibson.... solid combination at WR.
Unless a Megatron falls into their lap on draft day, no way Fins go WR in rd 1. Look at T in rd 1, G in rd 2, possibly doubling down on both positions with their draft picks. Other positions that should be looked at: S, DT (Starks & Soliai's contracts are up), LB, RB.

A sports feed I get daily email updates with NFL info says Fins are looking into signing pending free agent RB LaGarrett Blount. Daniel Thomas will be let go. Miller & Thigpen will be retained.

OC, FZB

Here's something for you.

"Let me offer you my definition of social justice. I keep what I earn and you keep what you earn. Do you disagree? Well then tell me how much of what I earn belongs to you - and why?"

Walter E. Williams

After Martin left the Dolphins in October, there were other exchanges including when Incognito repeatedly asked Martin to call him and asked him if he was OK. Martin responded Nov. 1, saying, "Wassup man? The world's gone crazy lol I'm good tho congrats on the win."

Incognito replied, "Thanks dude. It's unbelievable all the attention this is getting. All that's important is that you feel better and know we miss u dude."

Martin then said in a text on the same day, "Yeah I'm good man. It's insane bro but just know I don't blame you guys at all its just the culture around football and the locker room got to me a little … Btw … never check yourself into a mental hospital."

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/10382065/richie-incognito-attorney-releases-texts-involving-jonathan-martin

Incognito got a raw deal. Martin did not blame Incognito until he lawyered up trying to figure a way out of the mess he (Martin) created.

Jimbo

The OL is a mess but I think Miami needs proven experience and performance at LT. I think the LT position would be more effectively addressed in free agency. There are some very good free agent LTs available. Brandon Albert, Eugene Monroe, and Jared Veldheer. Veldheer will probably be franchised but the other two will most certainly be available. I know Philbin wanted Albert last year, my guess is he gets one of these proven LTs this year.

Then draft an OT with their #1 pick. If that #1 pick can actually play his first year, that should solidify the OL for at least 4 or 5 years.

WR is not a critical need position like OL, but a big WR who can go over the middle and take the ball away from DBs would be nice. Someone like Anquan Boldin.

If RB LaGarrett Blount is available wouldn't it be nice to take him from the Pats?

My SB thoughts...

Both teams won the same number of games getting there. The game, as we know, features the number one rated offense against the top rated defense. Thus, my gut tells me Seattle. Moreover, since history does show that -- "defense wins games."

Here is something else no one has considered. Any controversial calls will probably go Denver's way. Why? Because officials are impressionable humans, just like everyone else. They've seen and heard the same things we have, namely, Richard Sherman act like an uncontrollable monster. So what's more likely? A quick flag against Seattle's manner of playing defense, or one against Embassador Payton, model citizen who worked so hard to come back from injury?

Then there's the final nail to the coffin. Woodcock is picking Seattle, so forget everything else.

Believe this. Had Woodcock been around back in 1940 and been impressed with the Allied Forces, we would all be speaking German today.

The guy is the kiss of death.

I'm going with Denver "BIG!"
