What is your faith in Dolphins' Joe Philbin? Poll. Vote; plus Canes in Top 10, NFL W6 picks, baseball, equality, Collball W7 (updated) & more

It is SUNDAY, OCTOBER 13. In The Previous Blogpost (ITPB): Heat's-toughest-challenge poll, LeBron landing-spot map, NFL Pix 'n Fantasy results, SOPY rankings & more. 2) Follow us on Twitter (gregcote), Instagram (Upsetbird), Vine (Greg Cote) and Facebook (Greg Cote).

Canes to No. 10 in AP poll: Though on a bye this week the 5-0 Miami Hurricanes shot from 13th to 10th in today's news Associated Press national college football poll. This is UM's highest ranking since reaching No. 8 on Oct. 18, 2009.

WHAT DO WE THINK OF JOE PHILBIN?: He has turmed 21. He may now be judged as a man. Or at least 1aa1joepas the Dolphins head coach. Joe Philbin has been Miami's guy for 21 games now into his second season, with a 7-9 debut and a current 3-2 record into the bye. Have we formed an opinion yet? Right guy/good hire? Still have doubts? The genesis of this poll is that I'm not at all sure what the results will be. I know a poll on Heat coach Erik Spoelstra or UM's Al Golden would draw swooning approval. I know a poll on Marlins manager Mike Redmond or Panthers coach Kevin Dineen would draw mostly yawns. I'm just not sure on Philbin. He certainly does not look or act the part of a fiery NFL coach. (His Packers players used to call him "The Pilgrim" for his stoic demanor). The question is whether you think he's the guy to lead Miami back to NFL prominence. Vote and say why.

UPSET BIRD DAY: WEEK 6 NFL PREDIX: Dolphins are on a bye week at 3-2 to prepare for onset of AFC East 1aa1fripixschedule, but the NFL rolls on, undeterred. Click on Week 6 Gems for all of my latest NFL predix capsules -- there are four outright-upset calls this week -- and on Broncos Chasing All-Time Scoring Record for my Friday Page column on Peyton Manning taking aim at an NFL scoring mark that has stood since 1950. (My week got off to a split start last night. Had Bears over Giants but thought they'd cover the 8-point line and they fell just short).

BASEBALL'S BIG FOUR: The fan in me rooted for the Pittsburgh Pirates, so long bereft, to still be alive in the MLB playoffs, but the little teams and Cinderellas have fallen by the wayside (so long, Oakland) to 1aa1alcs13 1aa1alcs13nreveal a marquee Final Four. TV has to love Tigers-Red Sox in the ALCS and Dodgers-Cardinals in the NLCS. Big teams, big stars and, from a Miami perspective, lots of ex-Marlins left, particularly with Detroit and L.A. Quick previews/predictions: ALCS--Tigers and Bosox have played 1,981 times since May 22, 1901, but this is, impossibly, their first playoff series. It may be that I was weaned on Carl Yastrzemski and am thoroughly impartial here, but I like Boston for its overall offensive edge, Miguel Cabrera aside. Pick: Red Sox in 7. NLCS--The first two games' pitching matchups are the Dodgers' Cy Youngs vs. the Cards' Real Youngs. Even at less than full strength, give me L.A. Pick: Dodgers in 6.

ON PANTHERS' 'EQUALITY NIGHT': Florida Panthers at 1-3 have their 20th home opener tonight but I'm more intrigued by the club's upcoming Oct. 19 promotion: a first-ever "Equality Night," described as 1aa1equality"a night to celebrate the LGBT community and their allies." A portion of tickets sold will benefit The Pride Center, a South Florida site for HIV testing, education and counseling. "This is a time for the gay and straight communities to come together to battle homophobia in the lockerroom and in sports," reads the description of the night. Contact Brandon Loker at lokerb@florida panthers.com for more info. This is a great idea that hopefully will spread to our other local pro teams. Sports and its fans have tended to be a stubborn bastion of intolerance, and nights like help disintegrate those walls.

Poll result: No Bull. Pacers are Heat's biggest East challenger: We asked in the previous blogpost, and 55.1 percent called Indiana the biggest Eastern Conference roadblock for Miami. Chicago drew 33.8%, Brooklyn 8.7% and "other" 2.4%.

COLLBALL WEEK 7

The 13th-ranked Miami Hurricanes were off this weekend but since the nation had the temerity to continue playing anyway, we bring you a somewhat downplayed version of our Collball weekly roundup with only one truly big game on the state platter:

Week 7 state FBS games, listed in order of interest:

1aa1flalsuNo. 10 LSU 17, No. 17 Florida 6: An intriguing contrast of the Tigers' high-powered offense vs. the Gators' very good defense in arguably the national Game of the Week. For me it was a venue pick. LSU had won 27 of its past 28 home games, and I was right in thinking this would be a tough place for inexperienced Florida QB Tyler Murphy to get much done. My pick was: LSU, 23-17.

UAB 27, FIU 24: The Alabama not winning national titles, the one in Birmingham, is 1-4 just like FIU. Thought a second straight Panthers win was a distinct possibility, but it was nothing I'd bet on. My pick was: UAB, 26-21.

Marshall 24, FAU 23: Thundering Herd was favored by 11. Owls were home and 5-1 vs. spread. I was right to see a loss, but close. My pick was: Marshall, 32-27.

South Florida 13, Connecticut 10: Winless UConn had just lost to Buffalo. I mean, USF is bad, but c'mon! Nailed it. My pick was: Upset. South Florida, 27-24.

Off this week:

No. 13 Miami: The 5-0 Canes have a short bye week, back in action on Thursday night at North Carolina. UM  should handle the 1-4 Tar Heels. They'd better, to keep this dreamy season rising.

No. 6 FSU: Are you ready, Jameis Winston? Noles visit No. 3 Clemson next Saturday. ACC megamatch and national Game of the Week.

UCF: Knights 4-1 and almost ranked, but it'll be mighty tough to get over that hump next week against Teddy Bridgewater at No. 8 Louisville.

Week 7 national Top 25 matchups:

No. 17 Florida @ No. 10 LSU (see above).

No. 25 Missouri 41, No. 7 Georgia 26: Thought the Bulldogs, even wracked by injuries, were good enough at home to hand Mizzou its first loss. Didn't see this one coming. My pick was: Georgia, 30-20.

No. 2 Oregon 45, No. 16 Washington 24: The BIg O had won a nation-leading 17 straight road games but I'd think Washington at home getting 13 1/2 was too tempting. My pick was: Oregon, 37-28.

My record: This week, 5-1; season, 41-9.

anti if you invited david out for drinks, don't leave home without it. you'll be buying.

I think the Bye Week will kick Miami's ass. Especially the Offensive Line.

Nice to see the Canes back in the Top 10, Just a little side note,I was a young 17 year old snoot nosed kid from Palmetto Sr. High when I attended The "U"for 1 year(Before going west to ASU) and was a resident of Mahoney hall when I discovered Collage football...
They started off losing o the Lizards from G-Ville but went off to win there next 12 Games capped off be beating of what some said was a unbeatable team In Nebraska...
Any way great to see the U back were they belong....

Oh yeah here's a picture of a Stadium if it could talk.... The Story's it could tell...........

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/20/Miami_Orange_Bowl.jpg/800px-Miami_Orange_Bowl.jpg

Interesting history anti. As you know I too went to Palmetto, but what you don't know is I am also an alum of Arizona State. I was there the year they came within seconds of winning a national championship with Jake the Snake at QB.

WOW, Tom, No kidding,Same school,Just 10 years apart....Grad of "85" did my undergrad there till 88 and got my MBA in 90....
What a small world......

Chenz I think you may be right sir. Hopefully Tallyho or whatever QBs name is will make it through bye week without injury ...

Anti I thought you got your MA in hot college pussies...

I'm going admit something to you guys and I'll never mention it again. Oh this is harder than I thought it would be. Ok here goes, My favorite QB all time was not Joe Montana. It was... Oh f*** it was Ken Stabler. There I f***ing said it. I still hate what they did to our Dolphins in 74 but Stabler was my kind QB particularly the lack of moderation part. I'm sorry FZ. This is probably most shocking to you sir but I felt I had to come out of the closet...

SUN DEVIL FEST!!!

all of a sudden i am finding out that a lot of my pals went to tempe. geez, i am old enough to remember the fiesta bowl being created for highly ranked frank kush teams that were locked out of the then four major bowls: rose, orange, cotton and sugar. each had a little going for themselves- rose had the big ten coming west to play an aawu (forerunner of the pac-8 then 10, now 120 team, orange the night game with a tie to the big eight (a lot of oklahoma and nebraska), sugar bowl a team from the south generally (best game was ara's finale versus the bear, and my favorite (aside from the rose) game, the cotton bowl with a tie to the then southwest conference and an at large team. staubach leading navy against texas, ND stopping texas' winnning streak during heir wishbone days, and the very gritty joe montana leading ND back against houston. the fiesta has risen to the BCS strata, but i remember its humble origin. the cotton bowl was dead for awhile, but thankfully has been revived. any od my pals here remember jerry levias?

All right guys, I know the Dolphins have all kinds of problems on the offensive line but just so you know, we ain't the only team.

I'm watching the Ravens and the packers play and the Steelers and the Jets and all four of those teams have major issues on the O Line , so it is what it is...

Tom that's a very high Ricky Williams...

sure looks like it dukito. if she gets those thighs around your head make sure you don't get her off or she'll pop you head like a big pimple.

Tom it may be more a matter of making sure you "get her off" or she'll pop your head like a puss filled pimple...

Tom, I wonder if she has ever played alittle football. Bet she could give us that between the tackles power running game...

Anti if you mythologize the pussy it simply remains a myth. Yeah I'm down with that thoughtism my friend...

By the way Anti that was a great movie. I'll have to take another look. Right now I'm revisiting American Beauty...

Dukito,

Ken 'the snake' fackin Stabler?...WTF?...oh I get it, its An april 1st fools joke, right? Except we are not in april..next thing you're going to come out of the closet again and tell me you're a lizard?

By the way fellows, keep on with the pussy talk, its very entertaining...

My pussy nominee today is none other than ...

Pussy Galore.

Long live Ian !!!!!!!!

FZB, Here's Demi Moore..............

http://www.naughtyempire.com/content/082005-demi-06.jpg

Anyone have a weed wacker???????

Hows 'bout Octopussy...

WTF is Octopussy, a babe wit' eight pussies that can mercliously squeeze the life out of you?

FZ I'm not the lizard king, in fact I'm not anything...

Women sense my power and seek the life essence. I do not avoid women Mandrake but I do deny them my essence...

Anti I don't know about you soldier but all I got was a big ole STOP sign when I clicked on your Demi address...

Sweet Jesus, duke I usually consider you just this side of commie pinko igit but that movie American Beauty spoke to me soldier...

General, I'm glad to hear it was able to sneak through your highly classified and formidable defenses to reach the center of the cyclone sir...

Yeah Anti...what does a stop sign have anything to do with Demi Moore?

I'm assuming she must have quite the formidable bush given your weed wacker remark...

Well Martin apparently din't give up even one QB sack today. Good work soldier despite fact Fins didn't win today. Ah we'll get 'em next time...

Ah Anti with all due respect I'm stil waiting for that pic of Demi's cooch. Hopefully pre-Ashton Kutcher cooch. Like maybe around the time she made The Juror...

Seriously, why isn't there this kind of outcry over "Hispanic" nights?

Most Americans find that equally disgusting, yet no one makes a peep.

Look with all due respect "Hypocrites" many of us are still waiting for a Anti's pic of Demi's pre-Ashton Kutcher pussy...

NE Patriots are like cockroaches; you step on them, try year-in-year-out to exterminate them and they just keep coming back. I hate roaches.

Well, that's it for any thoughts on Miami winning the division. That Saints game was key. Now those roaches are in a position to win 80 or 90% of their remaining games and lock down the division. They still face Denver, but at their home. Slim chance for the Dolphins to better their record, so best be thinking wildcard.

The only sliver in anything positive concerning that NO/NE game and in NO losing is that now there are only two undefeated teams - Denver and KC. They have yet to play their two season games, so even if they continue to win independently of each other, there will only be one undefeated team when they eventually meet.

Hey OC,

I hate roaches too but relax amigo, we got this...the only thing I'm envious of NE is that offensive line they got...

My prediction was correct, no sacks today. Though I heard it was close.

I knew NE would win even after the INT with 2:15 left. The Pats have Tom Brady.

OC Dolphin,

tom brady would win with you and me catching his tosses. amazing comeback with a bunch of no-names; speaking of which, horatio gates is catching them for the lousy stinkin jets, and couldn't catch a cold here!! (not even a summer cold)

Ireland failed to address the team's needs on the O-Line after sending JL to STL. With a good O-Line, Tannehill has the time he needs to hit the open man...and I belive with some holes opened up front, Lamar Miller/Daniel Thomas can actually have some big games...
And what is up with the secondary? Got to stop getting torched. NOt sure if it's because they're spending too much time on the field because of all the 3-and-outs.

Here are some interesting stats that should help shed some light on just how far the Dolphins have (nt) addressed last year's production malaise. After spending un cojonal of buckaroos in an attempt to improve the passing game, one would, I suspect, expect to see a better set of numbers.

The Denver Brocos have three players who are all ahead of Miami's lone player - Brian Hartline - who at #31 on the list has a total of 332 receiving yards, and two touchdowns. If you include Wes Welker, who is #34 on the list, and add him to Denver's other three and ahead of Hartline, the production is as follows:

Denver passing attack: 1551 yards, 19 touchdowns

Miami passing (can't really call it an attack. Can we?): 332 yards, 2 touchdowns

Until the time comes when a Dolphin's team starts to register numbers even close to those of what a REAL division leading team routinely produces, well, let's just say...I'll remain always hopeful, but more realistic than optimistic.

OC the more light shed on the Fins the more they look like a bad barroom pickup after a night of sloppy drinking & poor lighting. And they don't even have the strength to suck the chrome off a bumper to boot...

I still say 6-10...

This Mike Sherman I don't know about him Philbin, Jeffery or Alfred E. Nueman. Very scetchy bunch at best...

we have some injuries in the secondary, and we had some on the line. we'll be ok.
anti, i'd accept your invitation to a drink anytime.
tom? you're still a lying douche. only you would say someone who invites someone for drinks would have to pay.. seems a bit redundant, huh?
at least you never miss an opportunity to show everyone how clever you are.

No,no Dukito,

10-6 amigo....its in the bag...there are but vety, ,vety few super teams out there, in fact you can count them with one hand, The. saints, the Broncos and the Seahawks and that's it ( I'm not sold on KC) which means every team can beat any other team out there.

10-6 guys..yee of little faith.

Hey BB...the Red Sox dudge a big bullet yesterday, just saying...U guys where vety, vety close of being down two and 0 ...

Sorry BB, meant to write dodged a bullet...

Is there any question that Brady is one of the all time greats?...man, what he did yesterday was just unbelievable, can't wait for that SOB to retired...

Hello NCAA, fack U NCAA...and have a nice day.

Tannehill is much better so far this year and has shown that he has real NFL talent but sadly he is not being given chance to excell. He has 6 TDs, 5 INTs and been sacked 24 times. That translates to 19 TDs, 16 INTs and 77 sacks for the season. That's if Tannehill makes it that far. And who do we blame for this?

Well the ostriches in our group blame Parcells for Ireland's lunatic moves much like the nitwits in America blame Bush almost 6 years later for Obama's incompetence.

By the way, here's BB...

http://thereaganwing.files.wordpress.com/2007/11/head-in-sand.jpg

and FZB... nice suit FZB

http://peakcare.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/head-in-the-sand.jpg

and here's david and his band of expatriate Miamians in CA. gotta love the choreagraphy...

http://shaunie.me/wp-repository/uploads/2013/08/head_in_sand.jpg-w450h297.jpg

But those with their eyes open know Ireland is to blame. He missed a great opportunity this past offseason by not addressing Miami's OL deficiencies.

Yup someone start up the Toro. I'm goin' in...

No leave the bag on there to pick up the clippings. We'll sell em for crazy money on ebay...

Let me in their first before you chop anything down. I suspect I'll find something wild to snatch in there.

"His bush expertise drew respect from the locals..."

Tom,

an offensive line doesn't get great by adding one player,IMHO. a line takes years of playing as a unit with matbe one fill-in-likemdave dalby taking over the hiking chores from jim otto. you can ease one, or maybe possibly two into an outstanding already group- like the glory era dolphins, raiders, cowboys, chieves, packers,... buy i don't think you you have a "jambalaya" line with 5 pieces thrown together and expect results either running or pass protecting. those patchwork lines that do work are rare. the dolphins are a shambles up front and if they aren't gonna run tannehill will have the same "success" as plunkett did when drafted by the patriots- shoulder damage in the foreseeable future looming, i hate to say. the young man has thrown extremely well and also is the best runner on the team, just as jim plunkett was for the early 70s patriots.

October baseball FZB nothing like it Big Papi saves the day again it was over if they lost that game.

OC honestly I would be more worried about the Miami defense at this point and Denver hasn't played anyone all year Miami has had a very difficult schedule comparably.

I agree shadow but you can't make a Strativarius out of plywood no matter how long you work on it.

but shadow, that would mean PLAY CALLING might have exasperated our line problem.
and tommy boy, the last time i checked, ireland DID address the line by adding keller and clabo. obviously that didn't work out.
he was also addressing the secondary, the receiving corp, the defensive line and the line backers..
better play calling that suited tannehill's strengths and masked our weaknesses would help.
screaming about ireland in week 6 while we're 3-2 after THAT 1st rough patch of games with the injuries is insane.
but then again, so is calling someone i liar when you are the moron that did not even know obamacare started 3 years ago.

The real problem with the OL was and still is LEFT TACKLE SFB. Get a real LT and move Martin to RT or a guard position where he might be able to contribute.

Gawd your posts are getting so lame and defensive I have a feeling you may be the nitwit himself, Jeffy Ireland. Either that or you take stupid pills immediately before posting. Why is it that every thinking man and woman on the planet can see we need LT help but you? Hmmm...

Miami has $20 million if unspent cap space. Think we could use that on the OL?

You ever get the sense that some people speak English but listen in a foreign language?
