What is your faith in Dolphins' Joe Philbin? Poll. Vote; plus Canes in Top 10, NFL W6 picks, baseball, equality, Collball W7 (updated) & more

It is SUNDAY, OCTOBER 13. In The Previous Blogpost (ITPB): Heat's-toughest-challenge poll, LeBron landing-spot map, NFL Pix 'n Fantasy results, SOPY rankings & more. 2) Follow us on Twitter (gregcote), Instagram (Upsetbird), Vine (Greg Cote) and Facebook (Greg Cote).

Canes to No. 10 in AP poll: Though on a bye this week the 5-0 Miami Hurricanes shot from 13th to 10th in today's news Associated Press national college football poll. This is UM's highest ranking since reaching No. 8 on Oct. 18, 2009.

WHAT DO WE THINK OF JOE PHILBIN?: He has turmed 21. He may now be judged as a man. Or at least 1aa1joepas the Dolphins head coach. Joe Philbin has been Miami's guy for 21 games now into his second season, with a 7-9 debut and a current 3-2 record into the bye. Have we formed an opinion yet? Right guy/good hire? Still have doubts? The genesis of this poll is that I'm not at all sure what the results will be. I know a poll on Heat coach Erik Spoelstra or UM's Al Golden would draw swooning approval. I know a poll on Marlins manager Mike Redmond or Panthers coach Kevin Dineen would draw mostly yawns. I'm just not sure on Philbin. He certainly does not look or act the part of a fiery NFL coach. (His Packers players used to call him "The Pilgrim" for his stoic demanor). The question is whether you think he's the guy to lead Miami back to NFL prominence. Vote and say why.

UPSET BIRD DAY: WEEK 6 NFL PREDIX: Dolphins are on a bye week at 3-2 to prepare for onset of AFC East 1aa1fripixschedule, but the NFL rolls on, undeterred. Click on Week 6 Gems for all of my latest NFL predix capsules -- there are four outright-upset calls this week -- and on Broncos Chasing All-Time Scoring Record for my Friday Page column on Peyton Manning taking aim at an NFL scoring mark that has stood since 1950. (My week got off to a split start last night. Had Bears over Giants but thought they'd cover the 8-point line and they fell just short).

BASEBALL'S BIG FOUR: The fan in me rooted for the Pittsburgh Pirates, so long bereft, to still be alive in the MLB playoffs, but the little teams and Cinderellas have fallen by the wayside (so long, Oakland) to 1aa1alcs13 1aa1alcs13nreveal a marquee Final Four. TV has to love Tigers-Red Sox in the ALCS and Dodgers-Cardinals in the NLCS. Big teams, big stars and, from a Miami perspective, lots of ex-Marlins left, particularly with Detroit and L.A. Quick previews/predictions: ALCS--Tigers and Bosox have played 1,981 times since May 22, 1901, but this is, impossibly, their first playoff series. It may be that I was weaned on Carl Yastrzemski and am thoroughly impartial here, but I like Boston for its overall offensive edge, Miguel Cabrera aside. Pick: Red Sox in 7. NLCS--The first two games' pitching matchups are the Dodgers' Cy Youngs vs. the Cards' Real Youngs. Even at less than full strength, give me L.A. Pick: Dodgers in 6.

ON PANTHERS' 'EQUALITY NIGHT': Florida Panthers at 1-3 have their 20th home opener tonight but I'm more intrigued by the club's upcoming Oct. 19 promotion: a first-ever "Equality Night," described as 1aa1equality"a night to celebrate the LGBT community and their allies." A portion of tickets sold will benefit The Pride Center, a South Florida site for HIV testing, education and counseling. "This is a time for the gay and straight communities to come together to battle homophobia in the lockerroom and in sports," reads the description of the night. Contact Brandon Loker at lokerb@florida panthers.com for more info. This is a great idea that hopefully will spread to our other local pro teams. Sports and its fans have tended to be a stubborn bastion of intolerance, and nights like help disintegrate those walls.

Poll result: No Bull. Pacers are Heat's biggest East challenger: We asked in the previous blogpost, and 55.1 percent called Indiana the biggest Eastern Conference roadblock for Miami. Chicago drew 33.8%, Brooklyn 8.7% and "other" 2.4%.

COLLBALL WEEK 7

The 13th-ranked Miami Hurricanes were off this weekend but since the nation had the temerity to continue playing anyway, we bring you a somewhat downplayed version of our Collball weekly roundup with only one truly big game on the state platter:

Week 7 state FBS games, listed in order of interest:

1aa1flalsuNo. 10 LSU 17, No. 17 Florida 6: An intriguing contrast of the Tigers' high-powered offense vs. the Gators' very good defense in arguably the national Game of the Week. For me it was a venue pick. LSU had won 27 of its past 28 home games, and I was right in thinking this would be a tough place for inexperienced Florida QB Tyler Murphy to get much done. My pick was: LSU, 23-17.

UAB 27, FIU 24: The Alabama not winning national titles, the one in Birmingham, is 1-4 just like FIU. Thought a second straight Panthers win was a distinct possibility, but it was nothing I'd bet on. My pick was: UAB, 26-21.

Marshall 24, FAU 23: Thundering Herd was favored by 11. Owls were home and 5-1 vs. spread. I was right to see a loss, but close. My pick was: Marshall, 32-27.

South Florida 13, Connecticut 10: Winless UConn had just lost to Buffalo. I mean, USF is bad, but c'mon! Nailed it. My pick was: Upset. South Florida, 27-24.

Off this week:

No. 13 Miami: The 5-0 Canes have a short bye week, back in action on Thursday night at North Carolina. UM  should handle the 1-4 Tar Heels. They'd better, to keep this dreamy season rising.

No. 6 FSU: Are you ready, Jameis Winston? Noles visit No. 3 Clemson next Saturday. ACC megamatch and national Game of the Week.

UCF: Knights 4-1 and almost ranked, but it'll be mighty tough to get over that hump next week against Teddy Bridgewater at No. 8 Louisville.

Week 7 national Top 25 matchups:

No. 17 Florida @ No. 10 LSU (see above).

No. 25 Missouri 41, No. 7 Georgia 26: Thought the Bulldogs, even wracked by injuries, were good enough at home to hand Mizzou its first loss. Didn't see this one coming. My pick was: Georgia, 30-20.

No. 2 Oregon 45, No. 16 Washington 24: The BIg O had won a nation-leading 17 straight road games but I'd think Washington at home getting 13 1/2 was too tempting. My pick was: Oregon, 37-28.

My record: This week, 5-1; season, 41-9.

Philbin comment. I would have liked to vote between very impressed and luke warm like. IMO he is a teaching coach who has a high work ethic. Philbin is not a meathead "Raw Raw" guy like Sporano or Ryan. What Miami needs to do to get back that winning franchise aura is have consistant coaching & talent. You can't give a coach 1 or 2 yrs and say "win it all or your gone" when the team struggles to win 5 or 7 games. It appears that Philbin was a good hire & Dolphins are building a decent team.

That Beasly (how ever you spell it) move is going to look like pure genius this year for the Heat.

Congrats. I've been to Jacksonville, nice little town, kinda reminds me of a much smaller hick version of Atlanta with a giant river running through it. The beach is very nice it reminded me of the old South Beach days when the pier was there, and south of Jax on the beach they have some super nice places all the way to St. Augustine. Not a bad move FZ. I haven't looked lately but a few years ago I was looking at ocean front RE in that area and lots of it was less than a mil. Here I CA you couldn't touch ocean front for less than a mil even if it was the last lot right next to the Mexican border.

Lets Talk about Ireland!!!!
He should be out like 3 years ago and here we are evaluating the coach!!!
The Coach can only do what he can do..with the raw material available...
He should have a medal for the mediocre candidates that Mr Ireland has given him...
I have been a Dolphin fan for over 30 years and I almost going to surrender between this Guy Ireland and the new Logo ....Mr Ross wants to destroy the franchise and I can tell you he is going in the right way...

OBI & ROSS ONE IN THE SAME ??

Think I am going to vomit......

Equality night.... REALLY !!!@#$%

Brothers I am all for you doing your own thing behind closed doors.....

But when you start parading around in my face & my grandkids face.. I AM FULLY OFFENDED!!!

Why don't we have Straight night then....

THESE SELF SANCTIMONIOUS-TELL YOU HOW TO LIVE-LIBERTARDS ARE DESTROYING THIS COUNTRY FROM WITHIN.....

Meanwhile if you say something against them, you are bullied into apologies....

And on top of that , there was an article today on the FRONT PAGE saying how GLAAD is not happy b/c there aren't enough LGBT's portrayed on TV....

WOW....THIS COUNTRY IS TURNING INTO A RAINBOW/PUSSIFIED?BRADY BUNCH VERSION OF ITSELF....

Cote, I'm guessing the "Pilgrim" reference to Philbin isn't ENTIRELY based on his stoic demeanor. I'm guessing a bit of intolerance for "their way" instead of MY way might be in the mix as well.
Coach, tell your OC to game plan some designed QB draws and rollouts.
Yes, tell him, unless you're still working under the illusion that Sherman is YOUR boss.

OB 4 ever...amen. How about last Americans in SFLA month

True dat OB4E!

No problem with you filthy, classless, leech spics doing whatever you want in your own houses, just don't parade around on my streets with your disgusting yammering families of primitive village dwellers!

can't we all just get along?

that was Rodney's head not Rodney. He's with me.

WHAT'S UP GUYS !

thanks Woody, yup I think I'm going to like J-Ville for sure lots of open spaces out there, can't wait.

on my boy Philbin, yeah he IS the best head coach we've had around these parts since the master himself ( Shula ) what! ?..yup, including Jimmy Johnson, the JJ we got was nowhere near the same JJ from Dallas.

Michael Dodge, quite amigo, you don't know what your talking about.

all right now on the Panther's "equality night", I'm all for respecting EVERYONE'S right, whether your a fag or a lesbo makes no difference to me as long as you do your dirty deed behind close doors I don't give a chit but like Orange stated stop ramming all this chit down my throat!..a sex act between to males is utterly disgusting and repulsive to my beliefs and way of life, again what you do behind close doors is your buznet but enough already..

so when do we have "straight night" Cote? and are you going to promote it U liberal douche?

Michael Dodge..sorry bud, meant to say quiet amigo..hehe, I was typing too fast..

Woody,

I think your are right on this kid Michael Beasley, if he's head is straight the Heat/Riley are going to look like geniouses, he can score.

so let me get this straight FZB. You don't want "fags or lesbos" engaging in public sex but it's ok if a "straight couple" sucks and fucks away on the beach out at Crandon at 12noon on Sunday. Is that about it?

just wondering...

yup that's about it Tom..nothing wrong with a BJ at lunch time I say..

which reminds me of all the good times I had back in HS specially at night at Crandon Park..Boy I could tell you guys some stories..

and maybe I will someday hehe

Crandon Park, Now that's a place I forgot about...
PK FZ, Give us a story about Crandon....

Tom,

YOU DO KNOW I WAS KIDDING THERE, right?..Any sex act in public should be dealt with and punished by the authorities..no question.

Thank you FZB. So as long as some discriminated against group, like "fags and lesbos", is just gathering to protest against discrimination you are ok as long as they're not doing the dirty in public. Right?

correcto Tom,

to each his own amigo, we live in a free country, anyone can do what ever they want...anything goes behind close doors, I may not agree with it but they have the right to do it..si?

Pretty "Liberal" there FZ.....HEHEHE

wouldn't you guys rather play with this?

http://www.magxone.com/uploads/2012/12/Ellie-Gonsalves-Maxim-Australia-8.jpg

just saying..

I'm startin' to think Philbin ain't exactly the coldest beer in the fridge...

now Anti no reason to insult me like that..

Or is it Mike Sherman that is abit pussified with his disdain for running games. I mean U have to have a vagina to dislike running the football down the opponents throat. In football it's simply not natural to view power rushing as a burden on the senses...

I think Mike Sherman plays with a Mrs. Beasley doll...

This gay thing is getting out of control, Son we'll have to witness this on a football field......

http://livelyproductions.org/home/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/funny-football-quotes.jpg

As far as Jeffey goes he basically like the guys in armed forces that are treated as "don't ask, don't tell"...

Yup I told you! That's a GREENBAY PACKER gettin his freak on at the behest of Philbin, Sherman et al...

Of course, there's nothing gay at all about grown men obsessing about athletic young guys in tight spandex pants grappling and wrestling with each other on a football field.

Uh, riiiight.

Not that there's anything wrong with Philbin and Sherman's alternative lifestyle choices...

gezzuz Anti..

that's disturbing..I think I rather keep Ellie Gonsalves thank you.

It just makes for Nancy Football...

It's not so much guys wrestling in spandex that's indicative of happy guys as it is their playing cocksucking football...

With all this talk of cocksucking where's Finsider for f***sake...

Sweet Jesus that f***ing gay uniform and moe Whale on their helmuts does suggest a gleeful NFL(not for long)franchise in it's moe death throes, Micheal...

whew,

I feel much better now about the Card's beating the Dodgers, Cote just picked LA..

gracias Cote.

FZB, I believe spending the night with Sofia would Make any Gay Guy straight......

David In LA, What say you???????????

thanks a lot Anti, now my blood pressure is up..along with other things..Now I have to try this.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zP02RvMOSXU

Good lord FZ, Luckily Base Commander Ripper hasn't been here for a while, f he saw your post on Meditation he'd call you a "A left wing,McGovern loving Commie Hippie"......

I generally don't care for Tom Cruise as an actor but this had to be one of his finest performance playing opposite heavyweight legend Jack Nicholson...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PKjr3S6NxPo

FZB- Congrats are in order for your sons success. I know the feeling when the kids become a success.

Well done Shaft.......

I hate when those gays move into a neighborhood and drive up property values. So sick of all their fancy big words, expensive cars, and stable careers, too.

Can't somebody do something about those horrible people!!

thanks Naples, its always a good thing when your kids go on to bigger and better things than you ever did.

no complaint's from this old boy on both my daughter or my son, the missus and I are very proud of both.

and now, its almost quitting time (at least for me) here is a nice blues song for you guys, hope you like it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2ojpyM378w

Haha wow, so this lame dumb circle jerk goes on every day?!?!

Seriously, get this crap blog off the sports page.

Finsider I was getting a tad bit edgy . Richard Simmons stood me up today. Stand right there I have something for you

Nice catch.... Let's go get a smoke

Gizzy I'm jealous. How cum you get all of Finsiders action?

hey FZB?
along with pouncey, our center for the next decade, looks like that AWFUL GM ireland drafted the 5th best tight end in the AFC, 9th in the league right now, in the same draft. not a bad 1st draft, huh?

david I get your loyalty but I wonder why opposing viewpoints regarding Jeffy & this franchise seem, "SEEMS" to be taken by you as personal attacks directed at you. I mean who really cares what the naysayers like myself think...

or maybe I just don't get your level of fan support for a GM and coaching staff that has yet to really prove itself...

Oh WTF none of this(naysayers hypercriticism nor your hyper-defensiveness) really seems to be terribly significant in the larger scheme of things. Never mind...

shafted? i respect other sports opinions, even principled conservative opinions.
i don't like being called a liar when someone misquotes me or doesn't know the details of some law they're upset about, but other than that i'm fine!
i think philbin is proving himself; i voted "not entirely sold".
i, like the self-proclaimed bully jimbo, believe in the ethic he has created here and the no nonsense culture, but i have had an issue with play calling and the absence of running.
the excuse, "the line sucks we can't run" is lame to me. they ran fine in a couple games; even in the 1st half against the saints.
they seem to be playing tannehill as if he's brady, which he isn't.
that last game, we never trailed by more than 7 i think, yet we threw more passes than brady, brees, rodgers and manning.
THAT is insane, and needs to stop.

anti?
nice pic of sophie.
what do i think?
i think out of all the tired old conservative loons on here, i probably have the best chance out of all of you to tap that.. :)

Faith in Philbin; not a smidgen of faith in his general manager, president, or owner.

For that reason, Philbin may fail and that's sad cause I think he's a good coach with a good staff.

“People think that a liar gains a victory over his victim. What I’ve learned is that a lie is an act of self-abdication, because one surrenders one’s reality to the person to whom one lies, making that person one’s master, condemning oneself from then on to faking the sort of reality that person’s view requires to be faked…The man who lies to the world, is the world’s slave from then on…There are no white lies, there is only the blackest of destruction, and a white lie is the blackest of all.”

“Clinton lied. A man might forget where he parks or where he lives, but he never forgets oral sex, no matter how bad it is.”

“If you tell the truth, you don't have to remember anything.”

“No man has a good enough memory to be a successful liar”

My razor implies that......

The simplest explanation for an event is more likely to be true than more complicated explanations.

Ayn Rand you would do well to heed Dr Johnson's observation. "Only by making a beast of oneself does one get rid of the pain of being a man..."

"The data is going to indicate sadly that when the Obama administration is over, black people will have lost ground in every single leading economic indicator category. On that regard, the president ought to be held responsible."

http://www.mediaite.com/tv/tavis-smiley-black-people-are-not-better-off-under-obama-president-ought-to-be-held-responsible/

There are no lies if one has no personal history...

For some reason I have a good feeling about Fins this week. I just have a feeling they aren't going to lose lets put it that way...

"Who let the hyenas out!" who who?

who is this? maybe the past or the present..?

“Think of the press as a great keyboard
on which the government can play.”

Rahm Emanuel?

“The most brilliant propagandist technique will yield no success unless one fundamental principle is borne in mind constantly - it must confine itself to a few points and repeat them over and over.”

promoting ACA since 2009?

“That propaganda is good which leads to success, and that is bad which fails to achieve the desired result. It is not propaganda’s task to be intelligent, its task is to lead to success.”

repeating a lie on national media outlets again and again until the public believes it's true.

“What does Christianity mean today? National Socialism (liberalism) is a religion. All we lack is a religious genius capable of uprooting outmoded religious practices and putting new ones in their place. We lack traditions and ritual. One day soon National Socialism (liberalism) will be the religion of all. My Party is my church, and I believe I serve the Lord best if I do his will, and liberate my oppressed people from the fetters of slavery. That is my gospel.”

sound familiar? these are all quotes from one man, employed to sway public opinion through available media outlets. This man is long gone but his approach to manipulate the ininformed population lives on.

For all his/her technological advancements and creature comforts modern man is to his detriment divorced from the Spirit and Mother Earth in a way early man was not...

I have a lot of faith in Jeff Ireland.

Jeff Ireland will create a thousand year dynasty in Miami.

Oh the Horror, the Horror...

By this time next year you'll be wishing for the good old days of 2007.

When I start pining for Wannstadt that's when it just may be time to say, "Adios cruel world..."

Jeff Ireland is a genius in the mold of myself.

LA in Six?
dumb...
real dumb.

There's a cancer growing on the Dolphins and that if the cancer is not removed the Miami Dolphins themselves will be killed by it.

Remember it's just the word of an informer against the presidents...

GREAT to see that the 4 star NC WR JUST committed to Miami.Cat has great hands, great vision, makes people miss,is a competitior and will be another Coley. Now we ll have salt and pepper WR s.Guy looks looks to be an immediate starter too.Golden s recruitment is really picking up more and more.GO CANES.

Anybody seen Finsider? I think the SOB gave me crabs so Heads & ah Fins Up guys!

What's up George?

I got crabs from Finsider Jeff and they itch worse than poison oak...

Ritz crackers have always been a vital part of a modern, gracious lifestyle.

Now that's what I'm talking about!

Where's Finsider? I'm ready to shoot RIGHT NOW.

Anyone nicknamed The Pilgrim is alright by me right Woodcock?

now national socialism is liberalism? stick to killing people, jimbo.. lol..
the only thing socialist about nazism is the NAME.
they actually were FASCISTS; fascism is as far right as it gets, while communism is as far left as it gets.
THAT"S WHY THEY WERE ENEMIES.
and neither of the 2 are any real worry to america right now; except for the fact that fascism is a far right merging of the state and corporate interests putting nation and race above the individual.
i'm sure you'll dispute that definiton, but go ahead and call webster's a liberal rag.. lol

mouning guys..

there's an old baseball saying and it goes like this:

good pitching will always beat good hitting, ain't that the truth, the Tigers pitchers threw a gem at the red Sox yesterday (sorry BB) and the Cardinal pitchers have been light's out.

David, Obi is a socialist at heart, you mi amigo are in denial..

say Pimple, and captain obvious..the swamp Lizards lost another one hehe, what U got to say about that?...chomps.

21-16

Read this. Dr Ludwig von Mises is correct.

Why Nazism Was Socialism and Why Socialism Is Totalitarian

http://mises.org/daily/1937

Actually we hated Russian communism because it found its roots in Marxian socialism and its founder, Karl Marx was stinking Jew.

Hey asswipe...take your hatred some placed else...get lost dip chit.

I no longer have hatred in my heart. I'm dead rotting in hell. Just a historical lesson. That really was why we hated Russia.

Well Gentlemen, I'll be attending the soon to be Los Angles Chargers Vs. Indy,1st time at the Murph in years,Cant wait for the Re-location of my Beloved Phins to this great city, Heck I might even invite David and Woodcock over for Drinks.....

anti keep on dreaming. The Fins ain't going to LA. But don't worry you're going to get a team....the Jags. By the time FZB gets to Jville to mooch of his one successful son the Jags will be long gone.

I'm feeling good about the Dolphins OL today.

Tom, No Not LA but San Diego........
BTW, When I invite David From L.A and Woodcock over what would you like me to say to our young,Liberal,Possibly Socialist friend???

Guy's did you see that David Garrad un-retired and Joined the Jets?????
He must have spent the 9 large he got from the fins...

AP Top 25 has just come out and guess who is back in the Top 10?
