G1: Heat 103, Pacers 102 (OT). LeBron does it again!; plus poll disses Shula, Super Bowl vote no big deal, Tiger v. Sergio & more

BLOG NOTE: Not sure who is seeing this and who isn't, or whether glitches are contained. My blog is among a few at MiamiHerald.com that have been wracked by technical issues all day, a problem not yet entirely resolved. My understanding is the blog may be accessed from some smart-phones and tablets (etc.), but not always from PCs or laptops. Hopefully we'll be fully back up soon. Apologies in the meantime.

1) It is WEDNESDAY, MAY 22. "Stay white, Miami!" --Micky Arison, 2006. Watch for our Heat-Pacers Game 1 post right here by around mid-afternoon. 2) Gut feeling. Newly retired Brian Urlacher is not a Hall of Famer, although it's arguable. 3) In The Previous Blogpost (ITPB): Miami suffers Super Bowl shutout, fishing with Lauren Tannehill, Chicago pays off Heat bet, Sad-O-Meter. 4) Join us on Twitter @gregcote.

Spurs up 2-0 in West: Miami's presumptive foe in the NBA Finals is looking like San Antonio now, although Memphis indicated in last night's overtime loss that it can enter next two home games with confidence.

Click on No Drama, Just Dominance for today's preview column by me on the Heat-Pacers series. I pick Miami in five games.

1aa1absG1: HEAT 103, PACERS 102 (OT): LEBRON'S 30 POINTS, BUZZER-BEATER LIFT MIAMI: Wild, ultimately thrilling night downtown, with LeBron James' 30 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists lifting Miami -- and his driving layup winning it as time expired. THIS is why he's the best, the NBA's MVP. Game 2 here Friday. Makes you wonder if this loss will leave Indiana dispirited, or feeling it can win this series. I suspect the latter. After two lopsided series, it feels like the playoffs have finally begun! (Watch for game column online). ..... Original post: As I count the reasons Miami will beat Indiana in five games in the Eastern Conference finals starting here tonight, I must include the reason embodied by these two 1aa1indmia 1aa1g1players as they enjoy an off  day with their families on South Beach. The Heat has superior abs. Our players' six-packs are eight-packs. It helps that the abs shown happen to be attached to LeBron James and Dwyane Wade, two other reasons to favor the Heat. Miami also leads Indiana in beaches. On a more serious note, the Pacers' weakness is their bench, a Miami strength. Also think Indy's penchant for protecting the paint will open up 3-point shots for the Heat. It'll be interesting to see if Chris Bosh can draw Roy Hibbert out of his comfort zone, and also how effective LeBron will be against an unusually strong defender in Paul George, who bothered James into 14 turnovers in three regular season meetings.

1aa1vogelYEAH BUT PACERS DOMINATE HEAT IN COACHES WHO CAN SPIN A BASKETBALL WHILE BRUSHING TEETH: Indiana coach Frank Vogel did this on David Letterman's "Stupid Human Tricks" segment as an 8th-grader in 1986. Click HERE to see the video.

SHULA 5TH-GREATEST COACH: DISS, OR FAIR?: It's an ESPN poll to select the 20 greatest NFL coaches from a ballot of 50. Bearing in mind that Don Shula has won more games than anybody, I thought it odd that the initial graphic for the poll showed Tom Landry front and center, flanked on one side by Vince Lombardi and Chuck Noll, and on the other by Bill Belichick and Bill Walsh on the other. (No Shula). When last I checked the voting, Shula was running in fifth place after (in order) Lombardi, Walsh, Belichick and Noll. Rounding out the top 10, after Shula, were Landry, Paul Brown, Joe Gibbs, George Halas and Bill Parcells. Also of note, Jimmy Johnson was running in 13th place.

POLL RESULT: DEAR NFL: KEEP YOUR SUPER BOWLS. WE DON'T CARE ALL THAT MUCH: Oh, the Dolphins and South Florida businesses care that Greater San Francisco and Houston beat Miami for the 2016 and '17 Super Bowls, for sure. But the South Florida infantry of citizens and Dolphins fans? Not so much. We asked in the previous blogpost how important it is to you that SoFla host a Super Bowl. The results: "Very important," 33.4 percent. "Somewhat important," 19.0 percent. "Not important at all unless the Dolphins are in it," 47.6 percent.

HERE'S A HOLE. CRAWL IN IT, SERGIO: This Tiger Woods-Sergio Garcia tiff is lowering itself to 1aa1golftsdeliciousness. Golf is rarely this much fun. Sergio escalated the unfriendliness 1aa1crowsgyesterday when he was asked kiddingly if he'd be inviting Tiger over for dinner and said, "He can come over every night . We'll serve fried chicken." (To Sergio's credit, at least he didn't include watermelon for dessert). Sergio later apologized, sort of, lamely saying, "There was no way the comment was meant in a racist manner." (Really, Serg? Seriously!?) Tiger justifiably Tweeted that the comment was "wrong, hurtful and clearly inappropriate." Garcia is pictured at left eating KFC (Kentucky Fried Crow). Quick scorecard: Woods, 14 career majors. Garcia, zero majors, zero class.

1aa1bbsadMARLINS SAD-O-METER BACK ON TRACK: We have this new blog feature we update as long as Marlins' winning percentage is under .300 -- as long as the New York Mets' infamous 1962 record of 40-120 (.250) is within dubious reach. After an aberrant two-game winning streak, yesterday's loss has the S-O-M back on track. Updated Sad-O-Meter: Current record, 13-33 (.283). Season projection, 45.78 wins, 116.22 losses.

Click back. Will be updating/adding to this latest blogpost...

If That Is The Only Thing Vogel Does Better Than Spo, The Heat Won't Have A Problem. Only Problem Is Vogel Is Also A Better Coach.

Who Here Thinks The Pacers Are A Playoff Team If Spo Was Their HC.

Yeah, That Is What I Thought.

The Only Reason Spo Is A Good Coach Is Because He Coaches The Heat. The Most Talented Team In The NBA.

Every single fried chicken restaurant stock price was way up in heavy trading today.....

You have to wonder if Sergio has already called Fuzzy to ask for advise.

Doesn't look to me that Sergio has put it behind him just yet. Here he is taking a pit stop during this week's PGA tournament.

OC, you don't even like fried chicken.....

Well boys the key to tonight's game is simple...outscore the other team by a minimum of 1 pt

How's that for simplicity, after all Kaz did say I write like a third grader, right Trust fund?

I guess this Sergio guy is a jerk, he must be related to you know who.

My top five coaches all time..

Lombardi
Shula
Landry
Walsh
Paul Brown

Special mention Bellicheat and papa bear..

OC I just had a crazy thought ...what if The Zen master comes back to coaching with the LA Clippers !!!

Wouldn't that be a hoot..

Forget it FZ. Not even in LA can you have a guy run your multimillion organization, who by the way, is about to marry the 1/2 owner of your chief, and only competitor in the LA market. Sterling will never have or trust it.

File that under just way too weird.

Jimbo! I did see your plans about your planned travels to Austin sometime in August. Let's see how it unfolds and I'll make every attempt to meeting up if at all possible. Skol, brother.

Well my prediction was right on the money, outscore the other team by 1 pt..

Heck of a game, Indiana served noticed they are for real..the Heat were lucky to win this game.

Night ya all..I'm way past my bed time

Congrats, FZ. You called it.

Here's one from my past. Yet another one that doesn't get referenced here on the blog. I don't have to say that I spent many a smoked-filled room under black lights and the stop sign I hung in my room listening to this. Naturally, the parents were away.

dukester, you of all people would dig this:

Now, that's music...(minus the stupid adds)

What a great, great song. speaking for my generation, that's hard to beat, and I hope y'all liked that mini concert.

ads, it's late

If it ain't Fleetwood Mac, Moody Blues, Blondie, Traffic, JethroTull, Zepellin, Rush, Benatar, Jefferson Airplane, Shocking Blue (and ther one hit), Cash's Ring of Fire, or any 60s/70s TV them song, I ain't listening. Just kidding, I'll check them out later.

Unfortunately, the coach ratings isn't far off. Winningest doesn't mean best. At one time, he could've been. But lack of Super Bowl success since 74 sort of ruined it. He lost a Super Bowl vs the Jets, about the biggest upset and most embarrassing at the time, given how belittled the AFL was. He turned around the Phins in a short time to the undefeated no names. Many of the stars were already on the team. Overall body of work probably does place him about 5th, though one would think he gets extra credit for 17-0.

Kaz, The stadium needs some cover and the design they came up with was pretty good.
Reliant stadium in Houston has a retractable roof, but when opened, you barely feel like you're outdoors. The Phims roof would be just enough while keeping an outdoor feel.

Closing in the seating may have helped fix what has been missing since the Orange Bowl...loud noise situations. Not sure you were around for the early 70s games, but the OB got loud. So many times the opposing QB had to take a delay of game or back away from thr ball. I still have memories of the defense trying to get the crowd to quiet down so that the game could continue.

I don't care about not getting any ol Super Bowl, but the big 50 is special. Getting it would have shown that Miami is the best and favored NFL super bowl site. In these times, stadiums need to update.

Houston is all excited...media is saying Houston is such a great city which is why they were selected. The real reason is obvious. NFL snubbed Miami because of the stadium renovation. Houston deserves to be a host occasionally, just out of fairness. But they wouldn't have gotten it ths time. Maybe a year or two later.

Is it my imagination or are most, if not all, of the Dade Silver Night girls pretty?

OC,

That version of " a love supreme" was the chit...Santana rules .

Mouning ya all..you too Kazy...

Refs need to swallow their whistle at the ends of games unless there's a blatant foul, don't know if there was a better view but from what they showed I don't think Paul George should have been shooting three free throws for the lead.

Awesome to see Dwyane Wade on the sideline that final play, don't think I've ever seen him so excited. He's obviously not used to being out of the game in those situations, I don't even remember the last time he fouled out of a game.

Heat have to play better in game 2.

Quick scorecard: Woods, 14 career majors. Garcia, zero majors, zero class.

Looks like we are implying that Tiger Woods has any class which would be false.

I said Shula should be in the Top 5 and rightfully he is.

Is there a test for HGH in the NBA those guys are ripped.

Kudos to Indiana. They made Miami work their tails off to even stay with them last night.LeBron s legend GROWS.Unfortunately the Pacers showed last night why I picked the Heat in 7 games.Hibbbert s a beast and West is a scoring machine and George can P-L-A-Y.Reminds me kind of a young Wade when he came into the league though George is a 3 year veteran at the ripe young age of 23.Wow.GO HEAT.

Bad foul by Wade he shouldn't be near George on that three.

He was so happy because LeBron saved him from being the Goat of the game.

Spoelstra called that last LeBron play for the game winner also I don't want to hear any longer that he's not a good coach it's just nonsense at this point.

The Indiana Pacers are a playoff team with Spoelstra as their coach also what a load of crap to say otherwise.

Work has been demanding, been hard to keep up with you characters.

Note: was off Tuesday. Wife, Fido & myself were hiking at our favorite spot in central LA - Kincaid Lake in Kitsatchie Nat'l Park. Trails are decent for running, hiking, biking skirting a large lake. We got about 2 miles and in and my wife spotted a big nest high in a tall pine. Saw 2 large juvenile bald eagles screaching to be fed. Every time the wind picked up, they would stretch their wings simulating flight. Seeing those large birds of prey made my day.

OC-will hollah at ya'll when I know I'll be looking for trouble on 6th st... lol... those days have passed, don't worry, you can keep your mace at home.

Big Baby, HGH? possible however, the legal supplements available is astounding & running full court for half the year should keep you lean unless you have a Burger King weakness.

Have any of you been to Fins workouts yet? Does anyone on here go to training camp?

Jimbo it's just amazing how health and conditioning have changed with the passing years many athletes used to not be as fit.

Larry Bird would have been considered a tub of goo compared to those guys (he could play a little though) I am sure there are many other examples in all sports.

Wow, what a freaking game. I watched the end of the game at a sports bar with OC Jr. in Westwood. Jr. kept telling me to stop screaming. I can tell he's only 1/2 Cuban.

Say, Kazaam, you walked to your car after the kid hit the last of the three free shots in overtime, right? At least that's what I told Jr.

"Jr., there's this fish on the blog that your dad wastes all his time on who has Heat season tickets. What? No, no, he's a trust fund baby he's not a millionaire. Anyway, will you listen to me. This fish, his name is Kazaamster....yea, that's his name, I told you he's a fish. I bet you that he decided to leave for the parking lot right after they took the lead. Thank goodness he left the building and took his mojo with him or else Lebron would have missed the layup...."

Oye nalga, send me the list of crap that Jr's car needs asap. He's going to bring it up on Monday to my mechanic.

If Shula consistently had a GM like Joe Thomas helping to build and maintain champion it would have been no contest. Unfortunately there were many years when Shula was supposed to be GM and Head Coach and it just doesn't work. Philbin will see that clearly soon enough unless FZB isn't forced to eat his young afterall...

OC that was very cool Jeff Beck walk though memory lane. Thanks. Talent is a wonderful thing.
