Dolphins' Mount Rushmore: Name the 4 greatest figures in club history. Poll closing soon. Vote now or never!; plus Heat & more

1) It is SUNDAY, APRIL 14. I'm back! Just returned from a long weekend in New Orrleans. Will detail that and much more in a new blogpost Monday morning. 2) In The Previous Blogpost (ITPB): Referendum on Dolphins stadium plan, 3 faces of Marlins fans, NCAA women's final. 3) Join us on Twitter @agregcote.

Last chance to vote! Dolphins Mount Rushmore coming Monday morning...

DOLPHINS' MOUNT RUSHMORE: WHO ARE THE ULTIMATE BIG 4?: Got this idea from The Herald's ongoing vote to select the 25 greatest figures in Heat history marking the club's 25th anniversary. From that vote 1aa1mountrwe can say the top four in order will be Pat Riley, Dwyane Wade, LeBron James and Alonzo Mourning. I cannot argue. I think selecting the Dolphins' top four will be tougher. Not the big two; I think those are pretty clear. But three and four? Hmm. You decide. As the draft nears, the timing seems fair. I won't burden you with six dozen choices. I have winnowed it -- somehow -- to a top 10. There were obviously some very tough omissions, including some Hall of Famers. I lamented excluding the likes of Paul Warfield, Larry Little, Jake Scott and even Ricky Williams from the ballot, but just couldn't picture them getting up onto our mountain. If you feel any of my omissiones are that egregious then cast one of your votes for "sombody else" and let us know who it is. Remember, though, we're looking for better than "all-time greatest." We want Mount Rushmore. Top four. Period. Vote and say why.

REMEMBER: VOTE FOR FOUR (4)!

HEAT'S PRETTY DECENT CONSOLATION RECORD: They didn't get the record 34 wins in a row, but last night the Heat got a club-record 62nd season win. Not a bad consolation prize. Oh, yeah. Almost forgot. They also secured home-field advantage throughout the playoffs, meaning the championship goes through Miami. Have a feeling it'll go through here and stay here.

Poll result: Support for Dolphins stadium improvements (with a caveat): We asked in the previous blogpost (you may still vote) if you support the upcoming planned referendum on devoting tax dollars for Dolphins stadium improvement and 66.4 percent said yes. It was 30.7 % no and 2.9% undecided. The caveat? Our blog skews toward Dolphins fan. The county-wide vote is sure to be closer.

Click back. Will be updating/adding to this latest blogpost...

My Vote:
Shula, Marino, Csonka, Vern Den Herder

Robbie, Shula, Marino, Greg Camarillo

OC, you missed one hell of a game by Kobe Bryant last night. No one, including LeBron has a game like that this year. When you add that it was a back to back in Portland when they're fighting for their lives and that he played all 48 minutes, man that was something. Oh, and he's 34 years old. Simply amazing.

Cecil Collins, Mercury Morris, Mark Duper, Randy Crowder

Sheriff Frank,

how about that runner from florida state that also made the chain gang? forgot his name but methinks he gives randy crowder a run for that last spot.

John Bosa, Yatil Green, Irving Fryar, Keith Jackson.

Mr. Woodcock,

without having seen the game or even seen the stats, it is impossible to not have kobe bryant on an all-time laker team. i am not a fan of his highly arrogant self, but he is a player with incredible talent and fearless in crunch time. gee, west, johnson, baylor, bryant and KAJ seems about right to me.

As good as those other players were, Kobe Bryant is the Best Laker ever shadow there isn't a lot of debate left.

Jim Mandich

Good link it's funny how we all remember those names good and bad.

Voted for the Zonk as best ever, sorry to the Danny Boy fans (which I am one)..

Zonk, Warfield, Jake Scott and Danny Boy

worst Dolphins,

Benny Malone ( I still blame him for scoring too soon against Oakland in the 1974 AFC title game.

and, Out of bounds Ted and his family, Jonh Bosa , Jacquie Shipp.

I agree with Richard,

special mention for Jim Mad Dog Mandich...a great Dolphin.

draft / free agency talk,

it seems the Dolphins have not closed the door on signing a free agent right tackle ( they like both Clabo and Winston ) both players will sign right after the draft and the Dolphins are in the mix for one of them unless they draft a RT that is ready to contribute, what could happen is they draft someone in round two or three and let him learn for a year.

it looks like the Dolphins will not try to trade up but will try to trade back ( along with a bunch of other teams) so more than likely it won't happen.

and don't be surprised if they do draft a DT with our first ( Lotulelei or Richardson ) if they feel they have the best value.

Ansah is also in play, most teams don't think he will go that high because of his limited experience/production.

need help,

my buddy and I are trying to remember the Dolphin player that claimed he was kidnapped and taken to the everglades...and then they found out the whole thing was made up.

Shula, Czonka, Taylor, and either Jake Scott or Vern Den Herder. Marino attained great personal passing stats but TEAM was never going to win during his era.

Taylor's TEAM didn't have much of a chance either leaving Marino off the list is silly.

Marino's team could have won it in 84- 85' or 85- 86' they just didn't he came closer than Taylor ever did (not his fault however).

HA HA HA I didn't even give Marino a pass. Can't hand off/play action fake effectively, can't be on Mount Rushmore. I know how RUDE of me I picked Zonk, Shula, Buonoconti(Thank you for him NE!), and Jason Taylor though I should have taken Griese. I know shadow but the guy was a large part of the Dynasty as was Earl Morrall, Sir Paul Warfield, Manny, Stanfill, Anderson, Scott, Den Herder, Morris, Kiick et al...
Jimbo regarding Monkey Ballz, I may not have been ready when you posted it. I didn't know about anal with eels until recently...

Dolphins top four:

Shula

Marino

Csonka

Cleo Lemon

duke, your research & contributions to blog society as a whole is admirable. Once again you have launched into a new topic,,, butt sex with Japanese eels. Keep up the good work the General would be proud of you. Is it possible to use these eels to combat North Korea'E Kim Jong Un? Eels, flouridation, drinking water, human females, scrotum grabbing monkeys, now were talking unconventional warfare Duke!

Anti-Dolphins top 4:
Jim Kelly
Joe Montana
David Woodley
Ken Stabler

Ass Ventura- Butt detective, starring Ben Dover

Joe Thomas should be on Rushmore too...

LOL Cecil the Diesal...

Dukey,

Yes indeed, the late great Joe Thomas, without him there is no undefeated season, how right you are mi amigo.

heading out here in about 2 hrs, waiting for some friends to get off work. the guy that posted this video is doing the trail in reverse. we hike the steep one mile incline first, then run down the 5 other miles to finish. vacationing in the rockies.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CsaJlxkqqL4

no disrespect to Jim Mandich but was he all time top 4? Fins have a few Hall of Fame players to choose from.

Shula, Marino = no-brainers (kind of like some of the imbeciles responding above with guys that wouldn't even make a 'Phins Mt. Trashmore). After that, Csonka is my favorite all-time Dolphin (as one who was around from the get-go ... sorry Danny Boy, you're second to the Zonk ; ).

For the fourth, and last spot, Joe Robbie ekes out a close call with Bob Griese - probably the most underrated QB in NFL history. (Marino, Montana, et al are better, but Griese doesn't get his due ... just saying.)

Nick, Zach & JT would be next, if it were a longer list. After that, it's a plethora of next bests to consider. Go Phins!

What's all this talk about Jim Manwhich?

Like Larry Tate Ambrose commented, there's Shirley a bunch of nitwits on here. hhhrrmph

After watching a replay of Super Bowl 7 on you tube I could argue DT Manny Fernandez as top 4 all time Dolphin.

I voted forn the first 3 as they are showing as favorites, and I would have added either Howard Twilley or Larry Little.

Posted by: Larry Ambrose | April 11, 2013 at 03:29 PM

---------
I can't quite agree that Griese is the most underrated. Reason being that a 38 year old Earl Morrall won 9 games with the undefeated team. That team was loaded, weak schedule. Bob was a solid QB, but when you throw less than 20 times on average, you have everything else happening.
The most overrated being Joe Namath.

Dwight Stevenson, greatest center in NFL history.... ever hear of him, Cote?

Sammie Smith,Jamar Fletcher,Cleo Lemon,Chris Carter

'Got this idea from The Herald's ongoing vote' - more like you ripped off this idea from the 790 guys, they do 'Mount Rushmores' of everything - teams, players, game show hosts, everything.

FZB,

you are onboard with mike1 on the issue of scoring too soon in the playoff game in oakland. i disagree totally and leave the blame not on my favorite dolphin runner, "crazylegs" malone, but on the defense which couldn't hold the lead against the raiders. they are the ones to bear the guilt over the clarence davis catch, and i remind you again that it was not a lucky catch at all- clarence davis was incredibly strong, the LA city high school shot put champion at washington high located near gardena, and a very good passcatcher out of the backfield. what guarantee does anyone have that had benny malone taken a knee at the one that the dolphins would have automatically scored? fumbles and penalties have happened in goal line situations, even with backs and a line like the dolphins had in 74. the famous "no name defense" crumbled in the final two minutes without the help of benny malone.

Shadow, you of course are correct....the defense is the one to blame but in their defense they had major injuries during the game to two corners and free safety..

I'm still pissed after all these years...lol

Shula
Marino
Robbie
Huizinger.
Of Of course Huizinger has to be on there, He was the one that started the downslide in the first place.

It goes without saying Dolphin Dynasty O-Line getz it's own mountain.

Robin Sendlein greatest Dolphin linebacker ever. In fact best linebacker ever PERIOD! BOOM!

FZB,

i never buy injuries as a reason that a team's performance is affected; even though there are only eleven men on the field at any one time, the team is composed of 47 or 53 or whatever the amount is. there is a reason that in football "depth charts" are more important than in the other sports: guys are gonna get banged up and eventually back-ups/reserves are gonna get involved. i remember the year that franco and rocky bleier were hurt and the raiders finally got past pittsburgh: the steeler fans moaned and groaned about how they had no runners and that oakland just locked in on swann and stallworth; however, the steelers still had their tremendous offensive line and had they had any sort of skilled backs to come in for harris and bleier it wouldn't have been the rout that the raiders enjoyed. i imagine that season was 1976, after which the raiders crushed the vikings with the previously mentioned clarence davis setting a then super bowl yardage mark.

Recap of Jeff Ireland's press conference:

Do you try to draft the best player available? "No because that's a proven strategy and I'm a huge a**hole. I prefer to draft for need when possible".

Do you and Joe Philbin see eye to eye? "Surprisingly so, he's actually more of an uptight stick in the mud than even I am when it comes to sacrificing character for talent. There's more of a difference schematically, he prefers talented players where I prefer offensive and defensive linemen."

Are receiving tight ends important in the NFL? "Naaa, where did you hear that?"

Might you take a risk since the Dolphins have so many picks? "Are you f*cking kidding me? I'm Jeff Ireland, we're taking linemen."

How is the atmosphere of the war room on draft day? "Oh, man, I remember all these awesome times with Jerry Jones and Bill Parcells with the Cowboys, draft day can be so exciting! But no, it's quiet as sh*t here with the Dolphins, I'm a terrible GM."

Do you know who you're going to pick in the first round? "No, we haven't actually talked about all the positions yet, I asked Joe to look at some players but I haven't heard back. Don't know what's going on there.

Are you aware that all the players you pick in the second or third round are busts and have you learned anything from that? "Well yea, because you guys don't shut up about it. But no, I haven't learned anything and I'm going to do everything exactly the same way."

Do you want to keep addressing the offensive line in the draft even though that's stupid and doesn't work? "Hell yea, if I could take Jake Long and Mike Pouncey in the first round every draft I would do it."

100% paraphrased, 0% made up. Check out full transcript on Armando's blog.

10 Greatest Miami players:

1) Dan Marino
2) Larry Csonka
3) Dwight Stephenson
4) The Marks Brothers
5) Ricky Williams (was unstoppable when he first got here with no other help on offense)
6) Paul Warfield
7) Larry Little
8) Jason Taylor
9) Bob Griese
10. Nick Buoniconti

Shadow, wasn't the year of Raiders 1st SB win the same year Patz were robbed in playoff game by bad officiating in which they should have beat Oakland?

Just curious. No I'm not still angry about Dolphin playoff loss in '74. I wonder how Raiderz would have fared against Miami that year without Freddie Super Glue and Cliff Branch? Not sure backups would have gotten it done against even Dolphinz depleted secondary.

Yeah, yeah moot point...

duke, I do feel your pain. I remember watching that Miami - Oakland game on Christmas eve. One of the most painful days as a young Fins fan.

Keith Jackson & Keith Byars were better tight end then Jim Manwhich.

I believe it was that same year duke bad roughing the passer call is the legend even though I still haven't seen it.

My Vote:
Shula, Marino, Csonka, Joe Robbie

solid picks Tom.

If reports are correct that KC is looking to trade OT Albert for a 2nd round pick, Miami should jump on it. Get Albert, stay at 12 and see if either G's Warmack or Cooper are there. That could be the strongest O line in the league. With the other 2 & 3's you could bring in 2 CB's & whatever else you wanted.

Super Duper and Clayton are trailing "Somebody Else" right now huh?

Buoniconti should be getting more votes but no one under 50 knows who the heck he is the guy was a fierce LB who made a huge impact on the franchise.

JT is going to the Hall Of Fame he has to be top 4 it's too tough when you allow executives and coaches we need another poll!

Players only:

1) Dan The Man
2) Csonka
3) Buoniconti
4) Jason Taylor

If we did a "faces of the franchise poll" Griese gets elected but not here.

Jimbo, YOUNG fan on Christmas Eve fer F***sake! That sayz it all. No wonder I love Bad Santa...

Or is it Badder Santa lol

wow Kaz,

surprisingly, you have a little bit of a dry sense of humor..( in reference to your 8:52 pm post )..of course you still don't know chit about football but there's hope for you.

so now in addition to your many talents, you can read Jeff Ireland's mind?, all righty then.

Dolphins / draft talk,

the offensive tackle situation is still up in the air, the Dolphins will wait until after the draft to see if they need to sign a vet tackle for a year or trade for someone like Albert (maybe KC will take a 2nd next year)..I personally would not trade any picks because they are too valuable but how about this scenario?

trade Starks and Bess straight up for Albert, we can then move Odrick to DT (that's his best position anyways) and draft someone to back up our starters...KC could use a pro-bowl caliber DT and a solid third down/slot receiver in Bess..Bess is not on the Dolphins long term plans anyways.

Philbin and Ireland are turning the roster over and are getting rid of some of the pieces that don't fit anymore so it could work, what say you guys?..I think is a win,win for both teams.

FZB did you have your morning coffee yet that's a bad trade.

FZB, not bad. The trade would work for both teams.

Jimbo - KC runs a 3-4, they can't use Starks. You're a fan of Albert? I don't know anything about him except that Kansas freaking City doesn't want him.

FZB, Come on man,Give us a look into your sons thoughts.I'll bet y bottom dolla that he drafts a O-Lineman.

Oh Yeah,BTW the new logo's gonna look good over here on the "Left-Coast"..
You know Lil Stevie wants to get closer to Hollywood,San Digo makes perfect since seeing how the Chargers are L.A bound.

Albert was supposed to be a sought after free agent Tackle. KC put the franchise tag on him. I would rather bring in a rookie then Albert. On the flip side, your trading a 2 for a vet tackle. Me? I prefer getting either G's Warmack or Cooper in rd 1 & Howie Long's boy in rd or 3 without trading up. I'd trade away some of the picks in rds 4-7 to grab CB, TE, K, RB Lattimore. I don't believe Miami needs 11 new rookies coming in. I am a strong proponent of trading away some of this yrs draft for more ammo next year.

KAZ, You are incorrect regarding Starks. Starks was brought to Miami to be a 3-4 DE-DT and part time NT. Starks was the starting NT when Soliai was hurt. It really doesn't matter if your in a 4-3 or 3-4 when your in a 3 pt stance interior D Line. What the difference is, gap assignment, read & react scheme or attack blow it up penetration. Starks creates chaos in both the 3-4 & 4-3.

duke, ahh the sentimental Christmas shows. Some like "miracle on 42nd st", or "It's a great life", or even "A Christmas Story". Me? I prefer Bad Santa. I swear we have been seperated at the lab.

The Meaning of San Diego....

FZB And Duke, This ones for you...

http://youtu.be/OEJh2FFUUoU

BB, Jimbo and Kaz,

I think is a good trade for both teams considering none of the players are in their current teams long term plans.

Anti, I'll see what I can do for ya (on who the Dolphins will pick) but I would not mind at all Warmack or Cooper ( I'm with Jimbo on that one).

our OL would look like like this.

LT-Albert
LG-Warmack or Cooper
C-pouncey
RG-Incognito
RT-Martin

what's not to like...

Anti,

the Dolphins are not moving to SD, sorry amigo.

thanks for the voodoo chile from Steve Ray...it was great.

FZB, I read it on the Internet and on Yahoo sports, It must be true if it's on both..

HEHEHE.

Anti you know what bites? Yes a**eating lesbians and dogz but also the fact that sound is f***ked on my computor at moment. Couldn't even fully enjoy Kaz's Nixon watching squirrel snipet. I did see Stevie Ray in concert fairly early on in his career in Boston. Very adept guitar virtuoso and performer.

Jimbo I blame DA RAIDERZ for our love of Bad Santa even though there was already a predisposition of sortz to the darkness anyway. I still like classic Christmas movies too. That must be part of my unconditional acceptance of President Nixon. He too moved fairly well from darkness to light AND he made SUBSTANTIAL contributions in the process AND ah.. well you've heard it before... Speaking of darkness & light, goodNESS & badNESS how could any Dolphin loving youngster not see the White Uniformed Dolphinz as the Good Guyz and Da Raiderz as dogs*** that needed to be scraped of one's cleats & strung up...

Duke, Maybe you should get a new one ehat comes with a instructor..
Maybe this one...

http://www.theultimatepinupgirl.com/Photos/hot_computer_chicks/Example_s_Hot_Chicks___43__Computers/2_z__800x600.jpeg

Hmm Anti is ah that one of your studentz that desperately needz an A in your class to graduate? Now I'm not telling you what to do because I believe you already know what to do...

Anti,

your going straight to hell ( or maybe ou're already there ) but keep up the good work.

and somewhere young Potter is still mad..

Ok Anti I'll take the brunette to see if she can help work out some of residual bitterness left from that '74 defeat in Oakland...

Kaz I enjoyed your paraphrasing of Jeffrey interview immensely but it did not provide much in the way of confidence with current regime. Cote I fear until this effeminate logo thing getz straightened out this will be a Dolphin team for victimz of self-hate...

FZB, Ever wonder how Potter fish dissappered the same time the Pope left???
I do believe the Phins might be on the right track with Potte now firmly in charge of the Vatican..
Oh BTW, Never AND I MEAN NEVER cross over the equiator..
It was the closest thing to nothing I've experanced.

Ahhh Duke, You know my students only get the grades they deserve..

leaving marino off the greatest dolphins list? really?
newsflash, football experts:
the reason no defense bought marino's play action was because WE HAD NO RUNNING BACKS. not because he didn't know how to do it.
every QB learns how to play action and hand off in pop warner.
stupidity knows no bounds.
these are the same people here in los angeles that actually blame KOBE BRYANT for the lakers troubles right now..

Dave, Are you looking forward to.....
A) The Los Angeles Chargers
Or
B) The Los Angeles Dolphins???
Either one in my opionion is fine with me..
Your thoughts??

Hola my liberal amigo David,

we all know the old argument, if Marino would have had the same team Joe Montana had Marino would be wearing all those rings instead...This I believe.

BB,

The C's and the Heat play tonight, I don't think we'll see any of the regulars from either team, I don't think I'll even watch it.

what Kobe is doing is unbelievable, he's playing all bu himself out there..

lol Anti...

stop it amigo, pipe dream...

my son Ireland is going to have the best draft, the Dolphins will go to the play-offs for the next 10 years ( play-offs? ), Joe Robbie stadium will get renovated and the team will sign a 100 year lease agreement to stay in the 305.

there

Jimbo - we all know Starks' strengths are as a pass rusher from the inside and a run stopper at DE, nose tackles are supposed to plug up double teams and free the linebackers, no way a 3-4 team would value Starks in that role enough to make that trade.

duke - read the transcript from Ireland, I didn't make any of that up.

Heat Big 3 are reportedly playing according to the Herald Doc is sitting KG and Pierce for "rest" it could be ugly if that happens.

Seems they should just cancel the rest of the season and start the playoffs now.

Kazaam,

the idea is for Starks to play DE in the 3-4 (which is what he did here) and not play the nose tackle, I agree with you he is not a NT.

KC has has many holes as we do but they have a new coach who wants his own players (just like Philbin) and that's why Albert is available, the guy can play.

like I said, win,win for both teams.

BB,

if our big three play it won't be for extended minutes, its basically an exibition game.

I hear that San Diego will have these ladies in the ed-zone for "Flipper" to jump over them in the end zone after a TD.ALA circa 1969 Dolphins endzone..
Cant wait..

http://images.swagster.com/images/200603220753317836swag_image.jpg

If this Photo doesnt get me banned, Cotes Minnions are asleep or are guys...

dios mio !!!!!

those three lovely "muchachas" look very, very healthy.

Anti, you won't get banned, Cote is a dumb liberal but he ain't crazy amigo.

thank god these young ladies have the proper floation devices huh??

http://images.swagster.com/images/200603220753317836swag_image.jpg

FZB, You do know We're "LOCO" here in the "Left coast"

Amanda has been replaced....

Real David perhaps I'm being a bit hard on Marino. Perhaps it's just Dolphin Dynasty gave me so much more pleasure than Marino teams in hindsight.

Give Cote credit the language may cause our posts to get kicked off blog but not beautiful naked women. I salute you Senor Cote...
