[It is THURSDAY, MARCH 14. New blogpost coming later today. 2) New Pope! New Pope! Jorge Mario Bergoglio -- henceforth Pope Francis; why not Pope Jorge!? -- has become the first Latin American and first Jesuit to become pontiff. He's a young pup, only 76 (!). Second in the voting: Edwin Pope. 3) In The Previous Blogpost (ITPB): Heat win again, UM hoops, Tiger at Doral, Heat Big 5@60, Reggie Bush. 3) Join us on Twitter @gregcote.
Bettings odds for Wallace's 2013 Dolphins stats: Courtesy Bovada, betting over/unders for Mike Wallace in 2013 have been set at 62.5 catches for 925.5 yards and 6.5 TDs. Guaranteed that Miami (team and fans) are counting on the 'over' on each.
Pats lose Welker to Broncos: Wes Welker leaving Patriots for a two-year, $12 million deal to join Peyton Manning's Broncos feels like a win for the Dolphins. It weakens New England's hold over the AFC East. Supposedly Tom Brady -- who restructured his contract to save cap money with the idea of keeping Welker -- is irate. Cannot fathom that Pats would not match or surpass a Denver offer that, in annual salary, pays Welker slightly less than Brian Hartline's new deal with Miami.
BLOCKBUSTER! DOLPHINS LAND MIKE WALLACE AND MORE: Click on Buying Hope for my column off the signing of Mike Wallace. Dolphins' free agency began big as Miami closed the deal on the prized receiver Wallace (pictured) and also landed inside linebacker Dannell Ellerbe to replace newly departed Karlos Dansby -- a big, and unexpected, signing. Miami also added FA linebacker Philip Wheeler and re-signed safety Chris Clemons. A big day for Miami. Wallace wore No. 17 for the Steelers. That's Ryan Tannehill's number. Somethin' gotta give. The Dolphins hoped they'd have a chance to face that minor issue, and now will. (Wallace said Tannehill can keep it if he'd like). Not everyone, though, agrees Wallace is good enough to merit the windfall of as much as $65 million over five years Miami is giving him. Setting aside the money factor, how good do you think Wallace is? Take a dip in our poll and say why.
DAN MARINO NEEDS YOUR HELP. (ACTUALLY, YOUR VOTE): We still love our Danny Boy, right Miami? Right South Florida? No, he never won a Super Bowl. Yeah, his infidelity scandal flared across our sky.
Like Miami itself, Dan Marino isn't perfect ... just spectacular. So now it's time for Dolfans to show some love. ESPN.com is hosting a vote for the cover of Madden 25, the anniversary edition of the wildly popular NFL video game. It is set up as an NCAA-styled 64-player bracket (now isn't THAT original!!) and first-round voting is underway through March 20. Marino, perhaps under-ranked as a no. 4 seed, must defeat No. 13 Reggie Wayne, the ex-Hurricane, to advance in the Old-School Bracket, where he eventually would meet, we presume, top seed Joe Montana. (Uh oh). Ray Lewis is a No. 2 seed. Other Old-School ex-Canes in addition to Lewis and Wayne are Jim Kelly (7th seed), Clinton Portis (12th) and Cortez Kennedy (16th). On the New-School side, Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill is, alas, a 16th seed going up against a No. 1 in Robert Griffin III. The only New-side ex-Cane is No. 12 Jimmy Graham, facing No. 4 Julio Jones. Click on Madden25 to vote. (This vote means something to Marino. He's been re-Tweeting mentions of it, at least...)
WORLD BASEBALL CLASSIC: HOW MUCH DO WE CARE?: I'm torn on this third World Baseball Classic -
- second-round games are going on this week at Marlins Park -- and on the WBC in general. It beats the hell out of the mundane inconsequence of regular spring-training games, but I have never quite embraced it as anything really important. I root for the U.S. team but find myself following the results more than watching them. I'm curious how you all feel about the WBC. And my curiosity, of course, is the petri dish for a blog poll! Vote and say why.
HEAT STREAK HITS 20!, SPO UNVEILS GIRLFRIEND: Heat last night won 98-94 at Philly for a 20th straight victory, only fourth team ever to do so. In honor of reaching 19 we'd linked to a live version of Steely Dan's "Hey Nineteen"; click here. Meantime, we'd like to introduce to the blog
Heat coach Erik Spoelstra's girlfriend, Nikki Sapp, whom he unveiled at the recent Reid/Fiorentino fundraiser. Spo, very eligible bachelor, is 42. Sapp (no, wiseguy, she isn't 19) is 26. She was a Heat dancer in 2006, pictured as such at right in her, um, blonder days. Boom-chick-a-boom-boom! They've been dating two years.
Click back. Will be updating/adding more to this latest blogpost...

Vote for Dan maybe he can beat Montana at something would like to see him on the cover.

We can only hope that Wallace does not take #19. The last two #19,s did not fair so well. Just sayin

Spo Is Still Gay To Me. (Don't Believe The Hype, She Is A Paid Model By The Heat Organization)
The Team(Heat) Is Finally Playing To It's Potential. Now Why Haven't They Been Playing Like That?
Wallace Should Just Change His Number To 87.
And The #19 Curse Goes 3 Deep

We All Know Who Is Going To Win The Baseball Classic.
Joe Torre Sucks As A Manager. Only Reason He Won Was Because Old Steinbrenner Paid For A Team Full Of More Stars Than The American Baseball Team. Even Ozzie Guillen Could've Won A Title With Those Yankee Teams.

Coach spo is on to some young vagina, nothing wrong with that I say...42 / 24 ..nice
Mr. Horace, you have a weird sense of humor, refreshing.
hola Dashi, long time no hear from you amigo, you went into exile after Pittman got traded, hehehe
Danny boy is still the man.
what's the deal with Wallace, do we bag him or what?
Posted by: FZB | March 12, 2013 at 12:28 PM
Hey dashi,
You still want the Dolphins to draft Manti and his imaginary girlfriend with our "numero uno"?
Posted by: FZB | March 12, 2013 at 12:30 PM
I still play Madden with my 10 y/o son on Wii but it remains one big game of toss and catch you don't need to run much at all (although it's still fun to mix it up a little) the challenge is playing defense.
My son adjusts settings with players though and he does this bootleg play that scores almost everytime I have learned to defend it a little though been playing that game since college in 91' still a classic.
Posted by: Big Baby | March 12, 2013 at 12:33 PM
I have never played Madden in my life, Its for you youngster's.
My son is into this "call of duty" game and plays with people from everywhere, how about that, Al Gore did some good after all.

Falcons lucky to have him back they should be right in the SB mix again with him there even at his age best TE of all time and it's not close at all.
Hey voted for Tannehill too even though he has no chance against RGIII.

Joe Torre managed a some very good Yankees team the right way.
Dan Marino is irrelevant. Go home Dan, take mumbles Shanon Sharpe with you.

Madden? I can light up the scoreboard , even with Chad Henne as QB. Both my boys & their friends struggle against me. Jimbo the tyrant
Posted by: Jimbo | March 12, 2013 at 01:51 PM
Jimbo, that's probably because through your intimidation, they are probably scared sh**less of what would happen if they beat good-ole-Dad.

Miami going to sign Wallace? Rumors out there that Fins and CB Sean Smith are talking possible deal, along with Wallace, TE Cook. We'll find out soon.
What do U think?
Wallace & Jennings?
Wallace & Welker?
Wallace & Cook?
Jennings & Reed?
Jennings & Welker?
Wallace is almost a sure bet, probably in the 5 yr @ $11 mil per range. A lot of money for a ConeHead. A haircut needs to be in the contract. The pin head look is soooo 80's SNL.
Posted by: Jimbo | March 12, 2013 at 01:59 PM
It ain't the beat'n, it's the anticipation of getting one :) When they were screwing up in school or the punishment warranted it,,, All I had to do was act mad and tell them to go into my room and bring my belt. Waterboarding ain't got shit on retrieving Pop's belt. Didn't even have to use it.

If it ever rose up to the Dad level, we were toast.
Posted by: OC Dolphin | March 12, 2013 at 02:04 PM
OC, true story. As a single Dad, I did stuff with my Sons & most of the time their friends almost daily. Skiing, swimming, fly fishing, hiking, basketball, football, etc. I made all of them pitch in to get stuff done including cleaning the house, laundry. One of their friends Mom showed up for her kid & I told her he could leave when the dishes were done, he ate my food at my house, boy is going to earn it. She said "Sure, right, I can't get my kid to lift a finger". She came in and saw for herself,,, astounded. Same thing with another 2 kids, they helped me for 2 days painting the exterior of my house. I took them with us to a huge water park in Denver for the day, steak dinner when we were done. Not a cheap day either.
Posted by: Jimbo | March 12, 2013 at 02:08 PM
I say Wallace & cook would be a nice combo.
I have mix feeling on Sean Smith and Jake Long coming back, I don't think Smith is that good and Long has his physical issues.
Jimbo, haircut?..funny amigo.
don't you guys think we need another pass rusher in free agency?
Posted by: FZB | March 12, 2013 at 02:09 PM
Tried, tested and proven, Jimbo. There is no substitute for proper parenting!
Posted by: OC Dolphin | March 12, 2013 at 02:11 PM
Ed Pope is too old to handle the day-in, day-out rigors of covering up child rape and scaring poor people into spreading AIDS and having babies they can't feed across the world.
Posted by: I am Kazaam | March 12, 2013 at 02:14 PM
Dolphins should look at DJ Williams, isn't Koa Misi's contract almost up?
Posted by: I am Kazaam | March 12, 2013 at 02:16 PM
oh boy,
here go go..easy Baby, restrain yourself amigo.
Posted by: FZB | March 12, 2013 at 02:17 PM
FZ, in spite of the name implication, adding a pass rusher to the shopping list in Free Agency does not come for free. Better to land a quality, less expensive one, through the draft...assuming that Ireland can actually fill that big need at WR. We should know soon enough.
Posted by: OC Dolphin | March 12, 2013 at 02:17 PM
You're right he couldn't handle being on the team of the number one helping religion of the poor on the planet.

Posted by: OC Dolphin | March 12, 2013 at 02:20 PM
OC,
Yes you are correct, free agency has nothing to do with free.
so this is what I would do,
Wallace, Cook, Winston, Deangelo Hall and a veteran free safety and call it a day.
Posted by: FZB | March 12, 2013 at 02:26 PM

Posted by: dukey | March 12, 2013 at 02:57 PM

"So charitable! Check the mailbox for thank you cards, I'm sure there are loads." Actually, there are. Not from anyone from this world, of course.
Posted by: OC Dolphin | March 12, 2013 at 03:16 PM
I've been dating a girl who's nominally catholic for months but the majority of my generation are what would be called 'spiritual but not religious'. They recognize that religion's completely made up (how could you not?) but still believe in a higher power.
That'll be the dominant belief system in the US in a generation, regardless of how it's labeled.
Posted by: I am Kazaam | March 12, 2013 at 03:18 PM
God = Communication, various religions = various languages. The sin may be 'to choose' not to communicate, in which case, one is faced dealing with life, ALONE.
Posted by: OC Dolphin | March 12, 2013 at 03:31 PM
Spiritual but not religious means that you don't want to bother with the sacrifice and commitment of worshipping someone who has given you the golden ticket to salvation.
Not really a selfless thing this spiritual but not religious business but seeing how most of your generation still lives with their parents and are destined for a life of odd jobs and welfare it's no surprise you think that way.
Posted by: Big Baby | March 12, 2013 at 03:33 PM
In keeping with my parable above, having spirituality is having the ability to make sound. To actually communicate one needs to learn a language.
Posted by: OC Dolphin | March 12, 2013 at 03:42 PM

Guess it fits the mold of Sean Salisbury, Trent Dilfer talking about young QB's need to do to be great in the NFL... or... Herm Edwards giving advice as IF he were ever a decent coach...

Let's see...Who wants to check my math...
Wallace: $13M + Starks at $8.45 + Hartline/6.16 + Moore/4 + Devin/.48 + Stanford/.63 + Spitler/1.32 = $24M against a $30.7M kitty = $6.64M left?
Are they back-loading any or all these new contracts?
