The Laura Silberman sham; plus Heat win record 15th straight, UM falls one to No. 6, Dolphins franchise Starks, golf's surprise, Bar Eaters & more

[1) It is MONDAY, MARCH 4. Sorry, again, that there was no live blog chat today due to a scheduling conflict. We'll be back at it next Monday 1-2 p.m. as usual. 2) Aside to Auto Nation: The "who you gonna call..." jingle that worked with the word "Maroone" does not work now. So stop it, please. 3) In The Previous Blogpost (ITPB): Dolphins and Darrelle Revis, Heat do Harlem Shake, Heat/Canes lead monster hoops weekend. 3) Join us on Twitter @gregcote]

1aa1kickTHE SHAM AND SHAME OF LAURA SILBERMAN: I saw this on TV and thought it was a joke. Like something from a Saturday Night Live skit. Premise: Female kicker gets historic NFL tryout but is so godawfully bad that it's, well, it's ridiculous-funny. So Silberman, 28, of New York City, appears Sunday at an NFL regional scouting combine at the Jets facility and becomes -- officially, and for all-time -- the first woman to participate in an NFL-sanctioned tryout. And what does she do? She sets women's sports back about two decades. She attempts two kickoffs. One goes 19 yards, the other 13. Then she stops, claiming a bad leg. She had played club-level soccer, no football. She had kicked her first football about two months earlier. Reports are she was unsure how to place the ball on the tee, or where to stand on her approach. She was thoroughly unprepared and unqualified for anything related to an NFL tryout. It smells like a publicity stunt. Yet the NFL played along, promoted her appearance, and the media throng there included E! Entertainment. Now, because of her "first," I have no doubt a quickie book or a deal for a really bad movie are right around the corner. Remember when "firsts" meant something? First man on the moon. First woman in Congress. First black president. Let the record state that the "first woman in an NFL-sanctioned tryout" was preposterously unqualified and had no business being there.

HEAT WIN CLUB-RECORD 15TH IN A ROW: [Update: Heat tonight won No. 15 in a row, 97-81 at Minnesota, led by D-Wade's 32 points. And I was dead-wrong about this being a danger/trap game]. Original post: Back to back the Heat have beaten a very good West team in Memphis and conquered an East rival in New York on the great stage of Madison Square 1aa1trapGarden to reach a club-record-tying 14 consecutive wins. Tonight the record 15th straight W should come easily at last-place Minnesota, right? Except you know it won't, right? It's a classic trap game. Pictured: A lobster trap of the type Dave Wannstedt would hang in the Dolphin lockerroom certain weeks. The letdown factor will be big for the Heat tonight. Plus LeBron James has a slightly hyperextended knee and is questionable to play. He'll play (knowing LeBron), but this might be a good time for his first rest of the season. By the way, still not sure what to make of the Heat re-signing ancient Juwan Howard. Can't imagine he'll play any significant minutes. To afford that roster luxury is another sign how good the Heat are.

CANES DROP ONLY ONE SPOT TO NO. 6: That's in today's latest Associated Press college men's basketball poll, and that's fair and reasonable, following a narrow loss at Duke. Top five: new No. 1 Gonzaga, then Indiana, Duke, Kansas and Georgtown. Florida is 11th.

DOLPHINS FRANCHISE STARKS: To nobody's surprise, the Dolphins today placed their franchise tag on 1aa1rstarksdefensive tackle Randy Starks, guaranteeing he will be among the top-paid at his position but assuring he will not be lost in free agency. It would have cost the team more money to franchise pending FA's such as tackle Jake Long or cornerback Sean Smith. Assigning a franchise tag is the first major step for general manager Jeff Ireland as he outlines how the coming free agency period will play out for Miami.

1aa1arodgirlWHAT A-ROD DOES IN HIS SPARE TIME: Yankee and Miami's own Alex Rodriguez, when not rehabbing from an injury or denying suggestions of steroid use, is now reportedly busy dating Torrie Wilson, a former wrestler and Playboy model. Torrie is pictured. (Is it cold in this blog!?)

GOLF'S CONSTANT SURPRISE: Enjoyed covering Sunday's final round of the Honda Classic up in Palm 1aa1mthompsonBeach and writing this column on the sport's splendid unpredictability. The week's script called for a Rory McIlroy-Tiger Woods showdown. Instead the final leaderboard was highlighted by a guy in Mr. Rogers' sweater (winner Michael Thompson, pictured) and a guy who'd had two heart transplants, Miamian Erik Compton. No team or individual sport more than the PGA Tour offers an anything-can-happen/anybody-can-win feel every week. Already looking forward to Doral this week.

Poll result: Interest in Revis, but not for 1st-round pick: We asked what you'd give up to get Jets CB Darrell Revis in a trade, and a plurality of 33.5 percent said 2nd and 3rd-round draft picks, 25.2% said a 2nd or 3rd-rounder and lower picks, 7.2% said a 1st-round pick and 5.9% said a 1st-rounder and more if needed. Another 28.2% would not give up picks for Revis.

A WAR ON BAR EATERS: A "bar eater," according to the Greg Cote Encyclopedia of Pet Peeves, is a person who walks into a fine restaurant, sits at the bar and orders a full meal that he or she consumes at the bar -- thereby occupying limited space intended for people who are A) there only to drink, or are B) there having drinks while waiting for a table. Again, I'm not talking about sports bars here; I'm talking about nice restaurants. To bar eaters and establishments that allow them: Restaurant tables = eating. Restaurant bars = drinking. Quiz in the morning.

They better work out a long term deal with Starks to lower the cap hit. Or we just blew 8 million towards the 45. Ugh

Cup hit would be virtually the same.

jake long says hes never felt better needs even more dough than starks

Cote, How dare you say the word Wannstedt, you should be tared and featherd..

Dolphins tagged Starks, no big surprise there, I like the move, it keeps our D Line in place (like Jimbo pointed out)

apparently both J Long and S Smith have some very high opinions of themselves, we'll see, also there is a good chance the Dolphins and Hartline can come to an agreement prior to free agency which will free us to after M Wallace ( or Jennings ).

Long wants 11 million per season he isn't budging he looks to be gone same for Smith.

Hartline wants 6 million per season Miami will have to agree to that and they will I think.

Randy is a beast great to have him back for this year.

FZB, Did'nt the Fins have to take out life insurance on Tannehill last year because of the Human Turnstile known as Jake(Turnstile)Long??, I say SEE YA....

Anti,

I agree on your Wannstedt comment, yikes..worst GM/Coach WE EVER HAD around here.

The Heat are on a roll, I think I agree with Cote about tonight's game, sit LeBron, the guy needs a break.

are the Celtics and the Lakers eliminated from the playoffs yet?

Hey Kaz, (from the last blog)...Parcells DID leave the Dolphins in pretty bad shape (cap wise), my point has always been the same, built the team through the draft, sign a free agent or two here and there and that it WILL take a few years...

Omar Kelly wrote an article a few days ago that said he's sure the Dolphins will receive a high compensatory pick ( 4th round ) which will give the Dolphins 10 picks total, 1, two two's,two three's and two four's)..nice.

ps- Mario Chalmers is still the worst PG in the NBA

I assumed that since Long is walking you guys won't have a problem if we draft a stud lineman with our first pick right?

OG (Warmack) or one of those tackles, if they are there.

I still want the Dolphins to go after Levitre (OG/Bills) the guys is a stud.

FZB - that's a Maddenesque comment, no sh*t it's better to build through the draft, it's like a coach saying he'd like his team to play 'unselfishly'.

It's a universally accepted platitude, not some radical philosophy that Reege Philbin stole from the Packers.

Some opinions now that Starks is signed:

They should keep working on a long term deal to cut down his cap number.

They should keep Dansby on his abysmal deal another year ($8.5M this year, cutting saves only $3.5M).

They should fire Jeff Ireland and hire any other scout from any other organization.

They should cut Richard Marshall and save $3.5M this year, $6.3M in 2014.

They should cut Dimitri Patterson and save $4.5M this year, $5.3M in 2014.

I will have a problem with that trade up for the Bama CB or it's epic fail in my eyes.

They should rehire Jeff Ireland as a water boy. Offer $1,000 more a year than the highest paid water boy.

Jake Long's contract is complicated because he was one of the last big rookie scale contracts and his deal was based on #1 quarterback picks. Start negotiations with a million below the highest offensive lineman salary (which would be $7.5M) then move on quickly if other teams are interested in working from his rookie deal.

He would be an absolute priority if it wasn't such a deep LT free agent class - going into 2013 with Jon Martin at left tackle could hurt Tannehill's development. But there are a ton of veteran options out there.

Reggie Bush means more to the Dolphins than any other team because he's the only vocal leader and 'face' they have and the only playmaker they have on offense. I would try to overpay on a short deal, I doubt he would get a big long term deal from anyone else to be a three down back but if he does let him go.

Clemons, Culver, Garner, Hicks, Mastrud, McDaniel, Marlon and Matt, Pruitt, Murtha, Spitler, Stanford, and Amaya can leave if someone pays them. Come back if it's on one year minimum-type deals.

Brian Hartline is worth more to the Dolphins because he has better chemistry with Tannehill than Bess. I'd try to sign him at $4M a year, wouldn't go over $6M, he's not a difference maker.

Sean Smith hasn't earned a huge second contract from the Dolphins, let him walk if someone offers it. My recommendations obviously leave the Dolphins with no cornerbacks and makes it an offseason priority. I'd sign Smith for a long term $5M a year deal but that number is very far from what he's looking for.

To start with free agents, I would wait outside Wallace's house and talk to him at midnight but if he signs elsewhere I would NOT turn to Jennings if Hartline has already been signed. They're the same player and neither one will change the scoreboard.

Ed Reed next - he'd be a cancer in the media down here and Dolphins fans would hate him by the end of the year but he would be an excellent mentor in tandem with Reshad Jones (BTW Shadow, Jones and Starks are two players I love to watch besides Bess and Bush).

And like I said, there are a ton of left tackles to take Long's spot. They can't go into next year with only Martin and rookies at LT.

Last move - publicly fire waterboy Jeff Ireland at halftime of the Jets game.

Cutting Marshall and Paterson leaves the team with the worst secondary in the league it's already bad that's not a solution it's a giant step backwards try to get them to restructure if you can't then you're stuck with them at that salary I could see both starting this year possibly.

Long wants 11 mil per you are saying that the highest paid OL in the league makes 8.5 mil what are you talking about the franchise number is around 12.

Kaz, Watch it or FZBs gonna call you Toilet-paper..

Kazaam this is the most convoluted ill conceived thinking I have ever seen from you I think are you feeling ok?

At least you're right about Reed though that would be good and a veteran FA OL is the answer for right now if Long leaves.

Marshall and Patterson are terrible, there would be zero drop-off from them to minimum contract veterans or rookies.

Yea, I was wrong about left tackles, the list I was looking at was base salary.

Franchise number is $10, Broncos just tagged Clady. Only two players make more than $11M a year, Long isn't worth it, let him go but sign a replacement.

They're not terible and if you think you're finding more affordable starting CB replacements they're not out there they both will be competing to play in camp.

and Kaz,

You can blame Anti for my last comment.

Promise you I could find two players who could combine for an interception for under $10M.

Neither one of those players is a starting cornerback BTW. They're overpaid nickels.

listen up guys,

you can get away with mediocre CB play AS LONG AS YOU HAVE A GREAT PASS RUSH, finding pass rushers is more important than CB's.

my son told me this..hehe

Marshall has 18 career int's and a few solid seasons Patterson had a great year for the Eagles a few years ago if those guys come resdy to play I could see both starting and earning their money it's a risk worth taking at this point.

If you want Jeff Ireland to lose his job then we go with your plan at CB Kazaam it's still possible we could get a CB in FA after Smith leaves but I don't think we will.

Drafting a CB is not easy lots of miss opprtunities there we should try anyway though my plan is trade up to get Milliner.

you guys have nothing to worry about, my son Ireland is not losing his job..

rejoice "mis amigos"..

I think Woody and Donna should have sex, that is if is OK with Anti..

The child will be known as the Wood Troll it will live in the forest and only come out at night.

Dolphins missed twice with expensive free agents, cut your losses and move on, Marshall and Patterson aren't cover corners anymore, they're nickel guys at best. You need cover corners if you're going to blitz the quarterback.

Patterson doesn't even have any guarantees in his contract, he'd be free to dump. With that money they could easily replace him. I see maybe 15 names on this list that would be upgrades and probably under $5M.

http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2013/2/11/3859518/2013-nfl-free-agents-cornerbacks-darrelle-revis-trade

With Patterson and Marshall gone they could resign Sean Smith or sign Rogers-Cromartie or Talib from the Pats and have at least one decent cover corner.

So we're judging Richard Marshall after 4 games in a Dolphins uniform and Patterson after 2 games?

I think Woody and Donna should have sex, that is if is OK with Anti..

She was ahhhhh, Kinda strange but what can you expect from a troll, Enjoy Cockster...HEHEHE

BB,

Kazaam thinks he knows football, hehe..just kidding there Kaz.

we have enough money to go after two solid CB's in free agency, I didn't know Patterson's contract was for like 5 mil, either restructure him or cut him, Marshall?..hopefully he is healthy again.

BTW It was 30 years ago..

FZB, How much do you think Kazs Trust fund was when he turned 21??

They must like Patterson or they wouldn't have signed him at the end of a non playoff season.

Marshall deserves a chance to prove he can play but if his back problems reappear then it would be time to release him.

the Canes basketball team dropped to 6th in the country, don't care one bit..What matters is what happens in the big dance.

bring on march madness !!!

Anti,

I happen to know for a fact that anyone that lives in Key Biscayne has to have a minimum of 10 mil in the trust.

I'm thinking of filling out the corresponding paper work to adopt Kaz as my son.

Easy there FZB, First comes the ACC Tourney, Thats gonna say a lot about the canes, They look great at home but so-so on the road the last month, Iam sure they'll be invited to the 64 team big dance, but gotta wonder how far they'll advance....
I wonder what Woodcock thinks about the "U" being a basketball school now...

I hear that Kaz is the son of Bebe Rebozo, FZB, Is this true?

Enough with that, trust funds are for new money who are afraid their brat kids are going to blow their little fortune and wind up on the street.

The Juwan Howard signing was pretty brilliant. Heat really showing veterans that take pay cuts to be here that they're appreciated, Mike Miller would have been amnestied by now on any other team.

Ahhhhhh, Kaz, Is your last name Rebozo??, Come clean son....

Juwon Howard is still in the league oh my goodness.

Rebozo was a "Cubano"..you think Kaz is half cubano?

The Canes basketball team is in good hands with Jim "El Don" Larranaga, we be fine...no worries.

and Kaz, you are a spolied brat which is the reason I want to adopt you, I'm going to need all that loot to set you straight.

Look for the Heat to give Lebron off tonight, Mike Miller would be a starter on any other team.., Has he been in any games this year???
The Heat are just to deep, Nobody's gonna beat them in a 7 game series this year or next...

Juwon Howard turned 40 years old last month.

If LeBron blows a knee there are plenty of teams that can beat them don't count your chickens just yet.

BB I think the Heat will be relaxing the big 3 so they will be well rested for the play-offs, and getting some minutes from the the "Back-ups", Who again would be starters on most NBA teams...
Just saying...

Kind of, Howard is more of an elder statesman.

Did you see the Knicks game Big Baby? I'm convinced nothing can hurt LeBron, he took a huge fall and landed on just the right angle for a textbook ACL tear. His knee barely buckled, it took the full force.

FZB - I'm probably already more accomplished in my field than you will ever be at whatever menial job you have.

Kazy-Pooh,

I flip burgers at Burger King @ coral way and 33rd ave.

FZB, LOL, I aways thought the burgers at the BK were "Flame-Broiled", Now I'am confused...
And Kaz, Being a "TRUST FUND" child, I did'nt know that was a accomplishment in any field..

Go occupy a park somewhere.

Hartline wants $6M a year, I can't believe anyone would give him that.

At least we know he won't be signed away by the Pats.

I think Kaz is a bit upset...

Anti...well, "Flamed-Broiled" is what THEY TELL the public...not so amigo, not so.

Kaz, what's so-matter, you can't take a joke?..I'm just having a little fun with you, I personally blame you for running Potter off the blog.

you too Anti..

I told you last week he would get 6-8 per season you are usually way off when you try and predict FA player salaries you should just listen to me from now on.

Pats would consider signing him for that number especially if they let Brandon Lloyd go which they are talking about doing his 3 million roster bonus needs to be paid soon if not they can release him he's under contract through 2014.

ok, ok, serious football talk,

the Dolphins still have a few more days to get both Hartline and Clemons under contract, if Clemons wants too much money then let him walk.

there are a ton of CB's in free agency this year, I think the Dolphins will try to get two and will draft one with one of their early picks.

again, I'll be great if we can land M Wallace and Levitre along with a couple of CB's, then they can add a situational pass rusher to help out on the other side later in free agency.

also, it doesn't look like Bush is coming back.

I am guilty of running Lil Potter from this site, But the good news is I hear he's up for Pope, Also MORE good news, There'll be less sexually asssulted teen boys in the US...
I'd say I did a great job...

Lets see, I said I would pay 4 and wouldn't go over 6.

You say he will GET 6-8.

His starting price, the most he is asking for, is 6. So which one of us is 'way off'?

gotta go to flip more burgers..hehehe

You never said anything about 6 last week now all of a sudden you're saying it because you heard that's what he wants.

You said 4 mil for Jennings and I almost fell out of my chair laughing.

'No worries on those rumors - Jennings and Wallace aren't looking for $14M a year, Tom Brady doesn't even make that. Jennings and Hartline might cost $4-7M a year they're pretty much the same player. I'd offer it to the incumbent, he was Tannehill's binky in 2012. Wallace would be a game changer, I might not spend $10M but I'd overpay'

Bowe resigned.

Sort of expected that.

Wallace will get more than 10 mil.

It will be closer to 12 but he will hopefully look good in the uniform with our new logo and be worth it.

You guys forget that there will be two or three more teams after Wallace.

I think I'll over pay a little for Wallace too.

Jake Long wants 11 million cheeseburgers.

Dumb article about bar eaters. Did it occur to you that a single person may not feel comfortable sitting at a table alone? Eating while at the bar is much more comfortable. If that person was "only" drinking they would take up bar space anyway. So who exactly are they misplacing?

Stick to sports.

First black president was 'preposterously unqualified' too, less than one term in congress.

Cote always goes overboard when he thinks he's taking a 'controversial' stance. No one gives a sh*t about that she-kicker or PETA.

Will say this for Barry though - besides being the first blackish president he's going to be remembered for revolutionizing the United States' foreign policy.

sure kaz.. was obama more 'preposterously unqualified" than, grant, wilson, lincoln, garfield, eisenhower, fillmore, coolidge, cleveland, kennedy, clinton, pierce, or george W?
some above did pretty well; others not so well. in fact, the president with the most "experience", buchanan, (10 years in the house, and 10 in the senate), was a complete failure.
what's so revolutionary about his foreign policy? it's pretty moderate republican to me..
baby, lebron getting hurt is your only pathetic hope, but since wade has regained his form, i still like our chances against anyone in 7 games. this is one of the best teams i've seen in a long time..
FZB? the celtics were eliminated from the playoffs when they screwed with ray and let him walk..

I agree with Oblahblah's drone policy. The only thing he's done right.

Marshall & Patterson are Fins for at least the next yr. Miami will let Dansby's contract run out next year & live with the $8 salary for this year. Cut or restructure Dansby your going to cut into your cap space.

Hartline will cost at least $6 mil a year, Wallace $11 mil a year, Long $11 mil a year, Bush $6 mil a year, Sean Smith $8-10 mil a year..... IMO Wallace is the only one worth that kind of $$.

If Miami can bring in top WR, get rid of Long, then I like G Chance Warmack for Miami's 1st rd pick of the draft.

A couple of comments. One, I agree with your evaluation of the tryout. It sets a woman that might be qualified back 20 years. What a shame for women and the NFL. Second , the Dennis Rodman carnival is not be taken seriously. It was nothing. If the country didnt fold up with that moron George W Bush as president it can't be harmed ever! 8 years of pure stupidity. And he was inches away from the button.

Yes of course, those presidents were all governors or generals or vice presidents or multi-term congressmen before being president.

Unqualified doesn't mean you're going to do a bad job, Lincoln only served one congressional term (then spent 30 years in and out of politics running for senate), that girl with no kicking experience could have gone up there and booted 10 in a row from 50. Just an odd comparison from Cote, that's all.

Obama has ended our land wars and improved our international credibility. He's completely shifted our foreign policy from nation building to counterterrorism and he's assassinated hundreds of terrorists without any cooperation from the countries they were in. We overthrew Libya with a single drone strike.

In 50 years Obama's legacy will be on his foreign policy, not the stimulus or his health care bill, which didn't go nearly as far as Democrats wanted.

Ladavid,

Celtics don't really miss Ray Ray he pouted when we got Jason Terry and he left for half of the money Boston was offering because his feelings were hurt.

Glad Starks will very likely be a Dolphin again THIS year.He s a big cog needed at defense.Would love to see him sign/stay for a few more years after that too.He s a solid player who holds his own with anyone.1 smart move so far that Ireland has made.

Ummmm Greg...a little late (Although never late for a hot picture of her), but A-Rod has been dating Torrie for a while now. Definitely from the middle of last baseball season.

Pepe,, what do you mean very likely? the dude is hit with franchise tag,,, do u think some team is going to pony up TWO #1's to take Starks?

Just my opinion. I'd like to see Miami sign S Ed Reed to a 2 yr deal. That won't happen & they will probably bring back S Chris Clemons who is average at best. Reed would make that young secondary instantly better and help each one of the young DB's careers by teaching them.

Kaz, really dude? really? Obama doing a great job at foriegn policy? really? how did Benghazi play out? Libya a success? talk about lowing the bar of acceptable. we still have casualties coming back from the Middle East. we didn't win, we didn't withdraw with dignity, were just cutting & running. Egypt? Arab spring was "democracy in action"? like O says. don't post while sipping the shine Kaz.
