Vent! Wildly mixed views as fans speak out on Marino scandal; plus history lesson from Shula, Parcells & Sapp make Hall, UM wins, Smirk Saturday & more

[1) It is SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 2. Have I mentioned that I, too, frequently go skeet-shooting? 2) Am thinking the Indiana Pacers now top the list of teams the Heat do NOT wish to face in the first round of the playoffs. Miami's rebounding weakness exposed again last night. 3) In The Previous Blogpost (ITPB): Marino scandal, Super Bowl pick, Smirk Friday, LeBron upset, the Lance Effect. 4) Join us on Twitter @gregcote]

Parcells, Sapp head new Hall class: Former Hurricane Warren Sapp, ex-Dolphins executive Bill Parcells and briefly-a-Dolphin Cris Carter among today's newly elected Pro football hall of Fame class, along with Jonathan Ogden and Larry Allen, plus old-timers Curley Culp and Dave Robinson. Thought Sapp was deserving but wasn't sure he was a first-ballot guy. Tuna? Um, let's just say he didn't get in for what he did in Miami. Good to see drafting Pat White didn't hold him back! Congrats to all.

UM men win again: Huge win today No. 19 North Carolina State for 14th-ranked Hurricanes, 79-78, on a last-second Reggie Johnson tip-in. Canes end on an 8-2 run, to go to 8-0 in the ACC.

CATCHING UP WITH DOLPHINS' OTHER (UNTARNISHED) ICON: DON SHULA: Strange the way it worked out this week. One day before the Dan Marino scandal broke open, I happened to have a long talk with 1aa1donshuthe Dolphins' other towering icon, Don Shula. I wanted to use the Super Bowl as a launchpoint to seek some memories from the man who has head-coached in more SBs (six) than anybody else. We spoke about all of them, the good and the not so much. Click on History Lesson From A Legend for today's full column, the result of that conversation. Don spoke at length of what a burden his 0-2 Super Bowl record had been, and thus what a personal relief that Perfect Season was. I also asked Shula about a perception of mine that -- even with a record 347 career wins, two Super Bowl wins and the Perfect distinction, he does not get the respect nationally that is due him. He simply pointed to the bottom line, the victory record, and let that speak for him. Today, a new one-hour documnetary, Shula 347, premieres on CBS at 3 p.m.

THE FANS AND READERS SPEAK ON MARINO!: A poll in the previous blogpost (you may still vote) asked whether Dan Marino's love-child scandal made you think less of him, and more than 3,000 of you responded -- with clear if not overwhelming support for Marino. "No" brought 59.7 percent, "yes" brought 31.9% and another 8.4% were unsure. The topic also generated around 250 comments in that blogpost. And my Friday column on the scandal -- Marino Deserves Forgiveness -- inspired more than 100 emails, from oh-thank-you agreement to 1aa1danmarincredulous objection. I haven't done this before, but I wanted to share a couple of dozen of the emails below, a representative cross-section. Overall I'd estimate the response was pretty evenly split (moreso than the poll results) between those who appreciated the column/support Marino and the opposite. Here's some of the reaction, almost all of it condensed:

"Why would this revelation be made on the eve of his Super Bowl pregame gig? Whoever leaked this surely wants to harm Marino. No one wins here except the lowly NY Post." -- Robert A.

"Marino has been spending his time on the practice squad!!!" -- Marc S.

"He deserves the criticism that comes his way. Some of us believe having sexual relations outside the marriage is wrong and the person SHOULD take a lot of heat, no matter how iconic." -- Maffront

"Agree with your column 100%. He did the right thing after he made the mistake. Many don't." -- James H.

"It irks me the media has to dig into everyone's personal life. Yes he made a mistake, but I could have spent the rest of my life not knowing about it. He doesn't need absolution from us." -- Patricia M.

"You have GOT to be kidding me. Just because he 'nobly admitted' the affair that makes it OK? Just because he's famous he gets a pass?" -- Mike

"The final word belongs to Claire and nobody else." -- RLPerez

"Your hypocrite buddy deserves nothing more than an immediate firing by CBS." -- Robert R.

"Your commentary said it all and I only hope Miami and the country will allow Marino to get on with the life he earned and deserves." --Stan G.

"Marino pulled off the QB sneak for almost eight years. is that a new NFL record?" -- David B.

"He has the same responsibilities we all have, but he actually should be held more accountable. He should be the example." -- Spikefootball

"Thank your for your column. It is very humanistic." -- Ian N.

"The great publicity machine has ruined his life. The writing and reporting fraternity will never recover from this departure from common decency." -- Charlie S.

"We all have weaknesses. We all fall at one time. Dan will keep on doing the right and good things he has done in the past." -- Walter F.

"This changes nothing as far as I'm concerned other than he's a human being with flaws like all of us." -- Doug B.

"Football players are not heroes. Most of them cannot manage their own lives and Marino is one of them." -- JoAnn A.

"Another case of the media midning others' business. Does outing Marino somehow make you feel better?" -- DM

"OMG are you serious? I cannot believe your Editor had the guts to run your Marino column." -- Josie

"Sorry, Marino needs to go away. I find his recently discovered affair, love child and hush money payments appalling." -- Joseph B.

"He's only human and his misdeeds shouldn't diminish the importance of his charity work and his years of leadership." -- Asra

"Dan Marino is human. The good he has done far outweighs his fallability." -- Jonathan R.

"It's a very selfish act and dishonest. This just confirms more about him as a man." -- Mark E.

[Note: Thanks to all readers who take the time to write me. I try to respond to all of my emails, even if it sometimes take awhile].

Smirk Saturday: Super Bowl With a Smirk, sent here to tweak the self-imortant NFL and gravitas of its big game, offers its final edition today, with a menu including dueling parties, Roger Goodell, Crispy Blue Crab Gyoza, Hall of Fame, Queen, an orangutan and, as always, much more Click on Smirk Saturday for the full column.

Greg,

This case reminds me of the Steve Phillips / ESPN case in which ESPN fired Phillips for having an affair with an assistant.

Based on your research for your column:

- Do you think CBS should fire Marino?
- Did Marino sexually harass the assistant?
- Is Marino the child's legal father?

Thanks.

Bill

Cote,

we're beating a dead horse here, Marino is human, he made a mistake..the only one that should be in a position to forgive him or not is his family & wife.

move along.

Shula, greatest coach..347 wins, that says it all.

No he won't get fired from CBS. Yes he is the jizz donar in the alleged freakazoid woman with the Elway teeth.
No it wasn't sexual harrassment, it is never sexual harrassment when the woman is unattractive.

Early 1980's, Pittsburgh Pa. Running around Pitt campus drinking & casual sex with most willing college girls... Dan Marino? no... Jimbo. I lived in the Oakland area from 80-83. Got the police record to prove it. Partying with Sam Kinison, Beano Cook, Franco Harris, Mr Rogers. ah the days.

Jimbo, "TAIN'T" Funny...

FZB,

it was almost impossible for C,S, and N to top their first album. but adding neil young made it a lot eassier. my two faovorites from the second album are posted: the first i eard when they dropped in on dick cavett right after woodstock and stills did this solo, as he did on the album. for a while steve stills was my favorite musician and "suite judy blue eyes' didn't do anything to tarnish that! especially that wild outro in that crazy spanish. but here is first the stills song from deja vu and then the beutiful neil young compoosition that has three songs segued into each other:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MPVtZ5rRu_4 and now neil young:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hpc7050vEyQ .... both exquisite pieces from two of music's really great writers and guitarists.

1,000 CATCHES OBLITERATED BY ONE HUUUGE DROP!!!

anybody who recalls chris carter's return to minnesota as a dolphin will remember he dropped an absolutely sure pass at the goal line that would have secured the division title in the mext to last season game, played on a late saturday afternoon. after that guffaw, he gave the vikings ancient kicker, gary hall, the choke sign when hall was called in for a last second attempt- guess what? the ball barely made it over the crossbar and inside the goal post, just as if it had been dropped there. at that point the game the following sunday in NRE was of consequence, and we all remember the meltdown of the dolphins that day- travis minor waiting for a kickoff at the 30 yard line, mare kicking off out of bounds that gave the patriots the ball at the 40, the dolphins trying to run out the clock calling three pass plays-all incomplete- that gave NE and the then young tom brady the opportunity to defeat the dolphins and start the six year no-playoff skid that co-incided with the dolphins decision to chuck bill zimfer from the radio booth and team our beloved mad dog with howard david, voice of the hated jets!! i remember listening to that schmuck howard david playing scoreboard with about 6-8 minutes left in quarter 4 figuring out where the dolphins would open the post season- guess again, howard!! and all of this because the future HOFer chris carter couldn't catch a pass perefectly thrown to him by jay fiedler which would have been the game. canton for chris carter- how about taking his passcatching clinic to canton, china and leaving him there. as big a dropped pass to miami dolphin historu as jackie smith's in the SB that cost dallas a win against the steelers. chris carter is an arrogant SOB and if i were rod serling i would put him in a groundhog day type movie where every time he wakes up he is looking at that ball on the ground in minnesota's dome. the guy that started the dolphins on the skids and then tried to get gary hall to miss by giving him the choke sign!!!!! how about a recount before he is enshrined?

Here's A Great Neal Young Song...

Anti-C,

“I want to congratulate Bill Parcells on his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame,” owner Stephen Ross said. “He had his own unique style in building a successful organization and instilled a winning mindset at all levels as both a coach and executive. While he might have had different levels of success at each of the teams he worked for, he always left each franchise far better off than how he found it.”

I like Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. Like their music a lot.

On the other hand, FZ, today they had the Beatles A to Z all day. I had to drive a lot and every time I changed the station the Beatles song that was on sucked. Those guys ruined the music industry.

Wow, Shad, how do you really feel about Chris Carter.

Boys, it's time to load up on the 49rs, I think that the Ravens are going to win.

There are few "sure things" in life this one is one of them.

I am the anti-pick in the Superbowl. Couldn't pick my nose with a shovel.

I like the Ravens to win, boys. This is a no brainer, Woodies Xmas gift in February.

Take the 49rs.

Jimbo,

In reference to your post from yesterday at 7:21 pm...

In vulgar cubanise we call the area north of the shit hole "La Krika"...you can ask Woodcock for confirmation.

Shadow, your rant about C Carter, what's that about amigo?

Anti, ANYTHING with Neil Young is good...

And last, mi amigo Wood's...The only explanion for you not liking the Beatles is your mom must have drop you more than one time on the floor when you were just " un bebito", dude, they changed the music world ( for the better)..stop hatin.

Oh, one last thing...thanks for the SB tip,.I'm calling my bookie ( el bolitero mio) and betting
The farm on the 49res..

Love the 49ers here. Think ravens are the public pick. 49ers have an incredible Oline and are very difficult to stop with the option, and have more weapons and the better d. I am a flacco fan but believe the 49ers take it in this spot.

A guy took his blonde girlfriend to her first football game. They had great seats right behind their team's bench. After the game, he asked her how she liked the experience.

'Oh, I really liked it,' she replied, 'especially the tight pants and all the big muscles, but I just couldn't understand why they were killing each other over 25 cents.'

Dumbfounded, her date asked, 'What do you mean?'

'Well, they flipped a coin, one team got it and then for the rest of the game, all they kept screaming was: 'Get the quarterback! Get the quarterback!' I'm like....Helloooooo? It's only 25 cents!!!!!!!!!!!

Today marks the 98th anniversary of the Ottoman Empire's ill-fated attack on the Suez Canal, February 3, 1915. Despite aid from their German allies, the attack was repulsed by British Commonwealth forces after one day of fighting. The photo that you can't see shows Turk forces preparing for the lengthy march that would take them across the Sinai Peninsula to the Suez Canal.

humor,,,, I recognize that.

Obama was looking for a call girl.

He found three such girls in a local pub, a blonde, a brunette and a redhead.

To the blonde he said, I am the President of the United States. Now how much would it cost me to spend some time with you?'
She replied, $200.'

To the brunette he asked the same question....
Her reply was $100.

He then asked the redhead. Her reply was, Mr. President, if you can get my skirt up as high as my taxes, My panties as low as my wages, Get that thing of yours as hard as the times we are living in, And keep it rising like the price of gas, Keep me warmer than it is in my apartment and Screw me the way you have retirees, Then you can have it for free, like the illegal immigrants.

Don Shula is THE Miami sports legend. Dan Marino #2. Howard Schnellenrothisbergerski is a distand #3. Jimmy Johnson (UM fame not Fins) even more distant #4. Garo Yepremian #5.

Jimbo, the Ottoman Empire. Boy, the game wont start for another 6 hours, time to slow down on the Wild Turkey consumption.

I like the redhead comment. Nothing like a redhead. Man are they horny.

I don't get all this ginger crap with the new generation.

Oh, for another night with Bernadette "Berny" Pepin.

FZ, I must have driven 100 miles yesterday taking my mother all over LA and I kept tuning to the Beatles station and all I kept hearing was crap. One piece of crap after another. Never understood what the big deal was.

Yea, yea, yea, my ass.

Woodcock. wish I were hitting the Wild Turkey however i have to work this afternoon. Had to cancel my party plans and save my liver for another day. Ottoman Empire comment contains a hidden joke.

Jimbo- Liked the jokes. I hope the 49ers win today. After today Vince Mc Mahon should hire ray lewis for his crazy RaslLING show. The guy has got the entrance and the dance down pat with the lights to be a big hit.

FZB,

the "rant" about chris carter comes from the fact that the dolphins extended his career in order to catch exactly that pass, on which he muffed. had he "slunk" into a corner someplace i wouldn't be so worked up, but he gave a former teammate the choke sign on a moderately long FG for an aged kicker who rewarded carter's efforts to distract gary hall by dropping the ball right over the crosssbar and inside the right post. carter catches that pass and the dolphin would have been divisional champs and the patriots wouldn't have gone to the SB. geez, everybody thought it was clasless when pete carrol gave stoyakovich the gag sign and carroll took a lot of heat and rightfully so. but pete carroll didn't do it after dropping a sure game winner and didn't give the choke sign to a long time teammate. chruis carter sucks and i was hoping despite his numbers he would bew left out. carter was definitely one of college football's 10 best passcatchers, but his pro career, especially the dolphin wind-up, leave me with a distaste.

Big Baby says the ball to carter was tipped, which i don;t remember the radio crew-the heavenly reporting of bill zimfer and maddog- mentioning a discernible tip. it was definitely a catchable ball that didn't get catched and led to the rapid decline of the dolphins. that's what i have in my chris carter file.

Big Baby,

read this:

http://scores.espn.go.com/nfl/recap?gameId=221221016

i was wrong on the kicker's last name (morten anderson, gary anderson...) but in the recap the write-up says the ball glanced of carter's hands: nothing about it being tipped, whic i dont believe it was from having watched the play later on, listened to two objective radio men, and a write-up.

FZB,

the beatles were excellent songwriters, possessed two very different but excellent voices (paul on yesterday is a thing of beauty), and a rock solid guitar player in george harrison. it is difficult not to like some things (pun intended) that they did because of their diversity in sources. they didin't do any blues tunes which separates them from every other group of substance.

Beatles quit in 1970, egos ruined everyones career. Paul McCartney & Wings had one or two decent songs, rest is crap. All of them sucked on their own. Fans, media gave former Beatles a pass because of their past success. Stones took over and are still playing decent to this day.
